First Nine Inch Nails, Now Coldplay to Auction Gear on eBay

coldplay2008a.jpgWhereas Trent Reznor’s eBay-powered, Nine Inch Nails yard sale came with little fanfare (aside from a tweet that they’re “just clearing out some storage spaces for a new beginning”), Coldplay have one-upped the T-Rez by breaking out their autograph-ready Sharpies and turning the idea into a charity event, writes TwentyFourBit this morning.

In a news post on their official site, Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion (who are all apparently involved in a beard growing contest) announced the "Coldplay End of Decade Clearout Sale," which consists of the band auctioning off guitars, keyboards, amps, posters, platinum discs, and other random items they’ve 'accumulated' throughout the aughts. Seriously, if you’re looking for a pastel leather jacket with epaulettes, act now!

All the proceeds go to London-based charity Kids Company, the same organization the band donated almost $1.7 million to earlier this year. But that’s not all: "All items will either be signed by the four of us, or accompanied by a certificate of authenticity," the band says. As we reported recently, Coldplay have donated £1million to the South London charity, which provides practical and emotional support to children who come from deprived families in the city, and these auctions will help further towards their cause.

The Coldplay yard sale will hit eBay 8 days before Christmas, so you could conceivably buy your girlfriend or boyfriend some autographed, multi-colored armbands just in time for the holiday. Check out the teaser video here. Here is the post by (presumably Anchorman):

We're pleased to announce the Coldplay End of Decade Clearout Sale. Over the past ten years we've accumulated a lot of guitars, keyboards, amps, posters, platinum discs and all sorts of nostalgia. From December 17 until December 31, we're going to auction them on eBay. All items will either be signed by the four of us, or accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, again signed by all of us. All proceeds will go to Kids Company, an incredible charity that helps vulnerable children and young people in London.

The auction starts at 5pm (UK time) on Thursday 17 December and ends at 5pm (UK Time) on Thursday 31 December. There will be a PDF catalogue of all the items, which will be available from Coldplay.com ahead of the auction. Good luck with your bidding and Happy Christmas. Coldplay

Your discussion on the End of Decade Clearout Sale is growing and can be found at the Coldplay forum here onwards (already 11 pages overnight!) [thanks inengsol1500]
