Coldplay top the list of bands organisers want to perform the official Olympic song at the opening ceremony for the 2012 games in London. Whoever is chosen will play the specially-commissioned song to a TV audience in excess of two billion, reports say.   Organisers have delegated the responsibility of finding someone to write what will be called 'Welcome Song' to arts charity the Dartington Hall Trust. According to an inside source, Chris Martin and company are their first choice to perform it.

Coldplay have topped OK! magazine's 2005 pop rich list after raking in an estimated $66.5 million (GBP37 million).   The band sold approximately 10 million copies of their album X&Y which, coupled with the clout of their sell-out tour, helped them beat several legendary acts to the top spot.   In second place was U2, whose income was $63 million (GBP35 million), followed by Sir Elton John who earned $54 million (GBP30 million). The Rolling Stones were in fourth place with earnings of $50 mil

Coldplay have been named at the UK’s top earners of 2005.   The rock band collectively earned a massive £37million in just one year thanks to the release of their third album ‘X&Y’ which to date has sold over 10million couple.   Although Chris Martin and co topped the OK! The UK music industry is celebrating a double success today after it was revealed the world's top five biggest selling albums of last year were all by British acts. The British Phonographic Industry also announced a huge boost in music sales, despite two of the country's biggest music retailers falling victim to the credit crunch.   Coldplay's album Viva la Vida topped the official global chart with sales of 6.6million. And despite releasing her album in 2006, Amy Winehouse's Back to Black came

Coldplay, have touched down in Auckland ahead of their two New Zealand shows. They flew in on Tuesday night from Sydney, after playing 11 concerts in Australia, as well as performing a set at one of two Australian Sound Relief concerts, to aid Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood victims.   The last time Coldplay were in New Zealand was at the Big Day Out in 2001. They are in the middle of a world tour for their latest album Viva La Vida. They play at Auckland's Vector Arena on Wednesday and

Coldplay have issued more tickets for their UK tour to combat people re-selling tickets online.   The group recently confirmed their biggest ever UK dates, starting at the Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium in June. A spokesperson for the band's management has told NME they have issued more tickets for the shows to ensure fans can get into the gigs without having to fork out 'hugely inflated prices'.   He said: "More tickets have just been made available for the following shows - London Crystal Pa

There's an interesting mention of Coldplay today in an article on Italian daily newspaper "La Stampa".   In an interview, promoter Giulio Muttoni talks about the city of Turin as a leading venue for international concerts nationwide, and mentions the artists who will perform in town this year, and plans to bring even bigger stars on the next year.   Tokio Hotel, Coldplay, and Italian acts Vasco Rossi, Francesco De Gregori, Antonello Venditti and the Pooh are among the acts planned for 2008 - wh

Chugg Entertainment today confirmed that Coldplay would return to Australia next February on their “Viva La Vida” tour, in support of their new album of the same name.   In a rare move for the Australian market, Coldplay will go on-sale with two shows in each of the East Coast cities to ensure as many tickets as possible are made available to meet the demand that was set the last time they toured. The four-city jaunt will kick off on Friday 27 February at the Burswood Dome in Perth, travel to Me

AUCKLAND - Coldplay may be forced to cancel their only New Zealand concert because Auckland's waterfront arena won't be finished in time.   Coldplay has a concert scheduled at Vector Arena in June but construction delays make it unlikely the 12,000-seat venue will be ready in time, the New Zealand Herald reported on Tuesday. Concert promoter Manolo Echave said he has been told the $80 million dollar project -- due to be finished by the end of this year -- won't be ready until July or August.

Coldplay have recently finished the first leg of their US Viva La Vida tour and here's how they fared against their compatriots in ticket sales. Coldplay's average ticket price for shows in North America was $83.71.   The Top 20 Concert Tours ranks artists by average box office gross per city in U.S. dollars and includes the average ticket price for shows in North America. The previous week's ranking is in parentheses. The list is based on data provided to the trade publication Pollstar by conce

As yet unheard Coldplay track The Goldrush will be released on a 7'' vinyl of the forthcoming single 'Life in Technicolor ii', according to sources found today.   The expected release date for this is 2nd February 2009. Will Champion will apparently take lead vocals, similar to Death Will Never Conquer. For a time, the two songs were mistakenly thought to be the same as each other, probably due to Will's vocal contribution.   The lyrics to the song are included in the programme for the Viva La V

A new music download website threatens to undercut services offered by HMV and Apple's iTunes.   7digital.com is selling single tracks from 50p and claims the quality and price of its DRM-free MP3 downloads easily match or even exceed content from other websites. The site has a 3.5 million plus catalogue of music with approximately 70 per cent available in high-quality MP3 format which the company claims makes them indistinguishable from CD quality. New additions to the MP3 catalogue include Ky

Connoisseurs may frown upon compilation albums, but popularity with the music buying public tells a different story.   Queen's Greatest Hits will today be unveiled as the best selling album in the UK of all time, with almost 5.5 million copies sold. Sales figures for albums dating back the last 50 years have been used to compile an official chart of the 100 top sellers. Queen beat Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, which has sold just over 4.8 million copies, into second place.

If Coldplay were nervous about playing the Grammys with the likes of U2, Radiohead and Paul McCartney, it wasn't apparent at the band's performance rehearsal. During the practice run of their collaboration with Jay-Z, frontman Chris Martin, wearing a "Barack to the Future" shirt, enteratined the Staples Center crowd of friends, family and media with somke stand-up humor.   In an announcer accent, Martin joked, "Welcome to 'American Idol.'" "I would never make it on 'Americal Idol,'" he quipped.
