The weeks after Christmas leading up to the slow thaw of March are traditionally the music industry's slowest: There are only a handful of major albums released, and many touring acts opt to wait until the spring before heading back out on the road. This isn't to say that there aren't a number of great performances and promising new releases to look forward to in the winter months, or that there's even more incredible music already scheduled to drop later in 2006. Here, then, is a chronologica

The album debuted at No 1 when it was released June 20, 2006. "Loose" has spawned three hit tracks to date

I wish I could start my article on Coldplay by talking about how much I know about music, and how Coldplay is a generic rock band that has somehow made it big through good looks and major-label support. But as Coldplay’s "Swallowed in the Sea" eases its way through my fluffy headphones, I slowly come to the realization that I can’t trash them. I smile wide as I catch myself trying to find something wrong with the track. Unfortunately for me, I can't find anything wrong. In three minutes and

United Center, Chicago, IL 31st March 2006 Invevitably, a day with no load in following a party is going to be a slow and quiet one. This is enhanced by the fact that Richard Ashcroft isn’t well today, which means no soundcheck, and no show for him. it’s by far the most Sunday-like day of the tour. There’s plenty of afternoon naps and very little activity until finally, showtime rolls around. The ‘Powers of Ten’ footage that is shown on the rears screen during The Scientist, is a journey thr

COLDPLAY, IZOD CENTER, E Rutherford, NJ. That’s what it says on the white A4 sheet taped to the mirror above my laptop screen. Below that title is a list of phone numbers and times for today’s daysheet. It’s taped to a mirrow in my (borrowed) office. Surrounding the mirror are those big white bulbs, like the ones you would imagine backstage at a Broadway show, or on Bugsy Malone.. It’s just over 8 hours until Coldplay are due to take the stage here. About 5 hours until today’s troop of Oxfam v

Coldplay are live onstage in Boston right now. I can see the spotlights on Guy, Will, Jonny and Chris, on the balcony, of the Boston Banknorth Garden. The band are crammed onto a tiny stage amongst the crowd. All eyes on them, and camera flashes lighting up faces. People have swarmed towards the band. It’s an amazing sight. The lucky few, in those seats around them, have an incredible view. Best seat in the house. Bet they didn’t expect that. Oxfam volunteers are scattered around the arena,

British rock star Chris Martin leapt onto the Washington stage, driving screaming fans wild as he belted out one crowd-pleasing hit after another. As dazzling lights and glitter burst around the charismatic Coldplay frontman, captivated fans could have been forgiven for missing the "Make Trade Fair" logo inscribed on the singer's piano at the concert. But if the hundreds of signatures collected by Oxfam volunteers during the Washington show this month were any measure, the message was not lo

The guys have had a football squad together since pretty much the start of this tour. Today, they’re in the same city as us for the days off, and they have a match against a local side. I head down to the sports centre, which is pretty large, dome roffed affair, and arrive just as Tour Manager Franksy is whistling in the start of the first half. Chris and Will are paying upfront, Jonny is in defence, whilst the team is rounded out by tour DJ Gree, accountant Yasmine, security guru Kelly, Dan P

From the stool of a piano Coldplay serenaded the world and it fell in love. All Australian Coldplay fans will remember Monday 10 October 2005 – in just over 2 hours tickets to the band’s three east-coast concerts had sold out, second shows were announced, and Adelaide and Perth had been added to the itinerary. Third shows soon followed in Sydney and Melbourne, and by the time all ten shows on the Twisted Logic Tour had gone on sale, the total tickets sold was over 100,000. There's an incredib

The band wander onto stage early in the afternoon with a few thing they want to work through. The setlist doesn’t vary wildly across the tour, but it has to change enough to keep the guys interested if nothing else. To this end, there’s a few new things being tried out that are new to everyone. Firstly, there’s just some general loosening up and getting used to being back up there. Will is first up, and heads for the piano. He’s joined by Jonny and they end up stumbling into playing a Blur track

Jonny gets a good cheer tonight for his vocal contribution to 'Don’t Panic'. The crowd continue cheering and even chant “Jonny, Jonny, Jonny” as the song finishes. I make my own contribution to the acoustic section. From where my gear is set up, I can’t actually see them doing this section of the show. I think that they’re done after two songs, and so kick off the drum machine that throbs the intro to Clocks. I see Will running back to the drumkit, however, eyes bulging with a look that clea

Coldplay wants to salve your pain; Fiona Apple wants you to feel hers. They were a contrast in styles Sunday night at American Airlines Center, a big arena band that filled AAC with balladic rock and a feisty singer who channeled her anger into song without taking it out on her audience. Playing Dallas for the second time on its X&Y tour, Coldplay balanced showmanship and earnestness with an efficiency that travels well from its UK base to the States, where the band's albums fly off the s
