For all their reputation as posh dullards, few bands generate as much liking and loathing as Coldplay. That's been the case since Alan McGee's immortal 'music for bedwetters' jibe five years ago.   Yet Coldplay silenced some of the doubters with 2002's A Rush Of Blood To The Head, where they started shifting toward a similar rarefied territory as Echo & The Bunnymen. On this form, completely dismissing Coldplay began to look very churlish indeed. So what went wrong?   Firstly, X&Y playe

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin reckons he can't bear listening to the band's first album Parachutes.   In an interview with Andrew Denton for Enough Rope the singer from one of the world's bigest bands revealed that and some other gems. "Think if I ever get married again I might put it on to impress someone but I can't imagine that ever happening."   Martin reasons that nothing can be learnt by listening to one's own music so he tries to constantly listen to other artists' efforts. You can catch

Coldplay's fourth album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, is likely to become the biggest selling album of the year, according to online retailer Play.com.   The entertainment website says it expect the four-piece's new release to achieve its biggest pre-sale order ever. Customers have been snapping up copies of the Brian Eno-produced album at the rate of one every minute during peak times and it looks set to exceed the sales figures of the hugely successful Spirit, by X Factor winner

Is Chris Martin having a laugh?   We've got video of the star singing a duet with Ricky Gervais and it is sidesplitting. The usually pitch-perfect Chris is totally out of tune singing Coldplay classic Fix You with Ricky equally tone deaf on backing vocals. The duet is taken from the new Extras Series 2 DVD, in shops on March 26, and has never been shown on British TV.   Ricky is actually playing Andy Millman’s alter-ego Ray Stokes, the star of fake sitcom within a sitcom When The Whistle Blows.

I saw Coldplay on the opening date of the '06 Twisted Logic tour in Seattle; I'd seen them this summer, as well. It was AMAZING. Chris ran into the audience. And stopped in front of my section. And came up to my row. And I got to hug him. And died.   More on this and close-up pictures here   Meanwhile, you can view good quality Vancouver pictures from Friday here [thanks Hazex]

A reminder (via MusicRadar) that The Simpsons are giving you the chance to make your friends 'yellow' with envy. That's the idea behind a contest in which fans are being asked to design a character for an episode featuring Coldplay's Chris Martin as guest star. This contest ends Saturday so Coldplay fans need to act quick to get their chance to anim-star alongside Chris Martin!   In the episode, set to air in early 2010, Chris Martin will appear in animated form in which Homer disappoints his wi

Coldplay could be accused of striking down a generation of British rock: Embrace, Athlete, Keane, and Kuwb, even Jamie Cullum are their children.   Where frontman Chris Martin started the dilution of Thom Yorke's genuinely agonised howl into a bleat of polite distress, these others have followed. It has diverted bands who may have been part of the rock tradition straight into the middle of the road. In the process, Martin has become a major rock star, while his band affects EMI's share price as

Before playing harmonica on "Death Will Never Conquer," Sunday night at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin apologized. "You paid good money to hear someone play an instrument very badly," he said. Then he proceeded to play it perfectly well, reports The Star-Ledger.   It was still a sharp move to apologize. Coldplay is one of the popular rock bands in the world, and Martin's lyrics sometimes seem self-absorbed, so anything he can do to make himself and the band ap

Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters, once described by bassist Nate Mendel as an "accidental" band, now have ten years under their belt, are playing bigger shows than ever and are up for five Grammys for their 2-disc opus, "In Your Honor."   With power chords, rock riffs and a fun-loving attitude that would have been unthinkable to Grohl's prior band - Nirvana - the Foo Fighters have become an unlikely torchbearer for arena-sized rock 'n' roll.   The ambitious "In Your Honor" - half rock and half acoustic

All four band members of Coldplay met up with Team BRIT yesterday, to show their appreciation for their organisation, which gives injured troops an opportunity to take part in kart/team endurance racing.   There are over 20 fantastic HD images to browse through, saved to our archives.   Click here to view the full gallery   According to Jim Fox on Facebook, Chris performed with the in house band afterwards but there is no video as of yet (Thanks @Coldplayatlas)     Discussion

Monday evening playing to a half full room in one of Cardiff's smallest venues isn't exactly the place you would expect to find a band plotting their path to world domination.   But then Liverpool cosmic beat combo The Aeroplanes aren't any ordinary outfit. So far they've wowed the crowds at the recent SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, where they were singled out as one of the most promising acts to emerge from the hundreds of bands peddling their wares at the annual music scrum. And Stateside the

Britain’s Glastonbury music festival is the longest-running annual outdoor fest in the world. Happening almost yearly since the early 1970s, the phenomenon regularly attracts gigantic crowds, the coolest names in pop music, and, more recently, the cameras of acclaimed British director Julien Temple (“The Filth and the Fury,” “Absolute Beginners”).   For several years, Temple turned up at the fest to shoot bands and fans making rock history. The result is a documentary film, “Glastonbury,” due in

There are 108 categories, with no less than five nominees per category, for Wednesday night's Grammy Awards, a bloated program that every year adds a new category or two in the hopes that there may finally be room for even Ashlee Simpson to be nominated.   Now I'm supposed to tell you who's going to win so you can rake in some bucks at your office pool. And since no one is actually going to watch the traditionally tedious Grammy telecast -- American Idol and Lost air at the same time this year -
