Meet the new penguins — septuagenarians, octogenarians and even the occasional nonagenarian. That would be 70-, 80- and 90-somethings in plain language — the stars of the Sundance Film Festival's Young@Heart, about a senior-citizen chorus group that tries to reclaim a little vigor by tackling punk, rock and R&B songs.   There were moments of poignancy: among them, Fred Knittle, suffering from congestive heart failure and breathing with the aid of an oxygen tank, crooning in a rich, deep voic

Coldplay is claiming the copyright of concert pictures taken by professional photographers, demanding complete ownership of the images, according to WebVivant, a British freelance photography site based in France. They write:   This is becoming all too common. Coldplay is just the latest in the line of high-profile bands who want to grab the rights to pictures taken of them in concert. If you're a professional photographer, you won't get a pass to take pictures of the band during their gigs unle

We've talked about green graffiti. Now get ready for "reverse graffiti" or 'clean tagging'. Popularized by British artist Paul Curtis, the idea is to stencil what you want to say by pressure-washing onto dirty cement. Sounds like a great idea. I mean, how can you get in trouble for actually cleaning the sidewalks?   Some rogue advertising using this reverse graffiti could get Coldplay and a Canadian cell phone company in a bit of trouble from Montreal authorities. The name of Coldplay's latest a

Coldplay covered The Flaming Lips and paid tribute to the band, whose singer Wayne Coyne was in the audience, at their show at Oklahoma on Saturday (February 1).   Chris Martin changed the lyrics of 'Everything's Not Lost' to "because you live in the same town as the Flaming Lips, the greatest band in the world," and led the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall crowd in a sing-along tribute to them, while Coyne pumped his fists in time to the music from his seat 15 rows back, according to fan

Jo Whiley was serenaded by Coldplay and praised by U2’s Bono as she left Radio 1 yesterday after 17 years. The DJ [pictured with Chris Martin in 2005] was given a celebrity-packed send-off on her last slot before leaving for Radio 2.   Coldplay had performed a cover of East 17's Stay Another Day, adding Jo’s name into the lyrics. The Klaxons and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl also appeared. Jo’s new show on Radio 2 starts on April 4. She said: "The boss Andy Parfitt gave me a speech and made me cry th

Coldplay are to release a live version of Gravity as a b-side on their single Talk which is due out on December 19th. Gravity, which was originally penned by Chris Martin, was a big hit for Embrace in 2004 and launched a major comeback for the Yorkshire band.   Talk is the third single to be taken from X&Y, the year’s second biggest selling album in the UK.

Coldplay covered the Sigúr Ros track 'Svefn-G-Englar' during their Icelandic Christmas concert.   Chris Martin worked the track into the end of 'Everything's Not Lost' at Laugardalshöll Sports Hall on 19th December 2002. He played piano and sang, while Ash's Tim Wheeler joined in at the end on guitar.   One onlooker said: "It was brilliant and the crowd went wild. Coldplay have never been better!"

A Coldplay cover of The Beatles song, We Can Work It Out is set for a DVD release soon, over 3 years on since the band originally performed it in Los Angeles at the Sir Paul McCartney tribute for 'Musicares. The show was never heard or broadcast in public before but it debuted on Sky Arts in the UK a few weeks ago. Atlas2000 on the forums has kindly extracted the audio for us. We are still waiting on a video of the performance though.   Download the audio, here     More photos from the 201

Chris Martin makes surprise appearence at Mencap show   Coldplay's Chris Martin covered The Killers at a surprise gig last night (November 27) at London's Union Chapel. Martin played a surprise four-song set with a violin player as part of Mencap's Little Noise Sessions. He opened with a version of The Band's 'I Shall Be Released', which he joked was written by Gareth Gates. He commented : "You shouldn't cover songs in an acoustic fashion in front of Lily Allen fans!"   Martin then played an aco

Chris Martin covered Oasis's 'Songbird' in front of Noel and Liam Gallagher at Coldplay's show in New York last night.   The band performed a show at the New York Bowery Ballroom (August 12), part of a brief North American tour in support of their forthcoming second album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'.   Oasis watched the show from the balcony, while fans also spotted actress Gwyneth Paltrow in attendance. The band performed a set comprised of the highlights of 'Parachutes', as well as a selecti

Despite the fact that they’re one of the biggest rock acts on the planet — so much so that they made selling 10 million copies of their last album seem unassuming — Coldplay keep a surprisingly low profile.   Fast-forward about an hour — rehearsals take a long time, after all — and Coldpay are standing onstage, dressed like French Revolutionaries, keyboards and timpani drums scattered around them. Various members of the production crew are prattling about, and since there’s nothing better to do,

Coldplay and Oxfam America are working together to promote awareness of trade rules that keep millions of farmers in poverty.   Coldplay will be championing the Make Trade Fair campaign during the “Twisted Logic” tour in August and September. The concerts will feature music from their long awaited third release—“X&Y”—and a call to sign the Big Noise petition. This petition calls on world leaders to change trade rules that keep millions of farmers across the world in poverty.   Coldplay’s 36

On a recent episode of the hit TV crime show CSI: NY, Detective Danny Messer’s cell phone rang with a familiar tone. “Coldplay?” his partner asks. “Yeah,” says Messer. “It’s called talk — something my girlfriend’s really good at.”   The plug was then followed by more traditional ads for the ringtone during the commercial break. No money changed hands for the product placement or commercials, but revenue from ring tones sold during the one-week offer — at $2.50 a pop — was split evenly between C

As you will know by now, Newcastle and Liverpool have been chosen as the only only two UK cities that Coldplay will play in 2010. The band will play intimate gigs somewhere in Liverpool on 19th December and Newcastle on 20th December to highlight homelessness. Possible venues in Newcastle have been rumoured to include the Tyne Theatre. Meanwhile, in Liverpool, several venues, including Mountford Hall/Stanley Theatre, O2 Academy Liverpool, or the Liverpool Olympia have been suggested on the grap

Coldplay was crowned the world's top-selling act of 2008 at the World Music Awards (WMAs) in Monaco, report Reuters.   Their latest album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," released mid-year, topped charts in the United States, Britain, Japan, Germany, France and elsewhere. Sales apparently benefited from Coldplay's marketing strategy, including giving away the first single free over the Internet for a week and staging a series of free concerts before embarking on an international tour

Thanks to this week's release of the band's new album, 'Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends', Coldplay are currently dominating the charts over at Last.fm.   You'll find them at the top of the Top Artists Charts and tracks from the new album take up 8 of the top 10 spots on the Top Track Charts. Radiohead is the only other band in the top ten, with 'Nude' and 'All I Need' coming in at spots #9 and #10, respectively.   Coldplay's Life in Technicolor however is missing from the charts, as is
