oh...
well i dont know how it works in canada, but i think that one thing that's good about the system here is that what u learn in high school wont really change what u can learn in uni (except your average in the end of high school, and some specific subjects like maths and english)... so it's good because when a 16 year old is asked to pick a major in high school, i doubt he really already knows what he wants to do with his life....
so this way by the time ppl go to uni, to pick a career for life, they're already old enough (or just older) to know more about themselves and know what they want to study
