well, if the album poll is any indication, most people think x&y is their best album (myself included). I really don't think it's that big a departure from their earlier stuff, but if you go into it with preconceived expectations (like anything) you'll probably end up disappointed. warpedfairy, I would suggest not trying so hard to "work on understanding" it. Just listen and let it come to you. btw, sounds great if you listen late at night, especially while going for an aimless drive or a walk. imo.
  2. they talked about it on world cafe too as i recall. you can listen here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4949670 btw, good observations, YamiMarik528. i like your interpretations.
  3. btw, for those who dislike math so much, music is quite mathematical if you look at in terms of pitch frequencies and rhythmic subdivisions and harmonic combinations and such. of course, it's also very emotional and mystical and organic at the same time. that's what makes it so great.....kind of like peanut butter and chocolate. :)
  4. Well the album cover is in binary, and most of the album alternates between up-tempo "rockers" and softer ballads in a sort of 1 0 1 0 1 0 fashion (although this pattern breaks down somewhat at the end). Also, a lot of the lyrics have kind of a dualistic, "binary" sort of quallity to them, if that makes any sense (ie. lost & found in Swallowed in the Sea, backwards & forwards in Twisted Logic, etc.). Not necessarily intentional, but it's there if you want to find it....
  5. Well, as long as the DVD plays when you stick it in your PC, then sure. There are different DVD formats though (+, -, RAM), and not all drives support all of them, so you might want to test to see if it plays first. If it does, then you just need software to rip it to .mpg or some other format. I use Nero because it came with my computer. It's not free though, so if you don't have it, you might want to look for something else, or check with victaniac who maintains the Multimedia FAQ (would be a good question to add to the FAQ anyway).
  6. no need, there's a link to this thread in the multimedia faq already.
  7. Audacity is good, but you have to re-encode the file every time you edit, so there's quality loss with mp3's. I use mp3DirectCut. It's small, free, with no length limits.... http://www.mpesch3.de/
