  2. Britney Spears Released from UCLA Psych Ward By Mike Fleeman Update Posted Wednesday February 06, 2008 09:45 PM EST Originally posted Wednesday February 06, 2008 04:00 PM EST Spears, shortly after her hospital release Photo by: INF Britney Spears left the psych ward at UCLA Medical Center on Wednesday and later was chased by paparazzi and news helicopters as she traveled to a hotel and a lawyer's office. Spears, 26, spent seven days at the hospital even though her psychiatrist had extended her stay Sunday to a 14-day involuntary hold. It was her second early departure from an involuntary mental-evaluation hospitalization. Although her father Jamie Spears had been granted temporary legal control of her affairs, Spears appeared to use the hours after her discharge to get her own life in order, accompanied much of the time not by her dad, but by her paparazzi pal Adnan Ghalib. With local news helicopters hovering and photographers swarming her black Mercedes at every traffic stop, she first drove to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where, according to Internet news reports, she met with her business manager. (Also, in a bizarre scene in the lobby, she ran into California's First Lady, Maria Shriver, and they exchanged greetings, Shriver's rep tells PEOPLE.) Two hours later, she was driven away by Ghalib – with photographers in hot pursuit – to the office of estate lawyer Adam Streisand in Century City. Streisand had claimed to represent Spears, but was rebuffed by the court after another lawyer said Spears wasn't mentally sound enough to hire Streisand. Not seen anywhere Wednesday was her other friend, Sam Lutfi, who had been slapped with a restraining order after Spears's mother claimed he drugged and verbally abused Britney. A Quiet Release from the Hospital The latest drama for Spears began quietly enough. The Los Angeles Times reports that Spears left UCLA Medical Center without fanfare Wednesday afternoon, with the help of a private security detail. She had been taken by ambulance to the hospital on Jan. 31 and was initially held under a 72-hour psychiatric hold, which was extended to 14 days. Only her psychiatrist would've had the authority to deem the singer well enough to be released, legal experts say. It's unclear whether the singer will continue with outpatient treatment. Her father was granted temporary control over his daughter's affairs on Friday (though it did not include control of her psychiatric treatment). His conservatorship was extended this week to Feb. 14 – following a battle in court over who's best suited to look after the troubled pop star. More court documents were released Tuesday, revealing Jamie Spears's conversations with Britney in the hospital. Spears's meeting with Shriver was first reported by Extra. • Additional reporting by ELAINE ARADILLAS and MARY MARGARET (Source: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20176565,00.html)

  4. Here's one I didn't see coming: Eva Mendes in Rehab By Stephen M. Silverman Originally posted Friday February 01, 2008 01:00 PM EST Eva Mendes Photo by: Francois Durand / Getty Eva Mendes checked into Utah's Cirque Lodge and has been in the facility, which deals with substance-abuse problems, for several weeks. "Eva has been working hard for the past year and made a positive decision to take some much-needed time off to proactively attend to some personal issues that, while not critical, she felt deserved some outside professional support. Out of respect for Eva's privacy, we do not wish to discuss further details," her rep told PEOPLE Friday. Cirque Lodge became a familiar name last year, when Lindsay Lohan checked in for treatment. The substance for which Mendes is being treated has not been reported. The news was first reported on TMZ.com. At last year's Cannes Film Festival, Mendes told reporters that to feel comfortable doing a sex scene with Joaquin Phoenix in We Own the Night, which also starred Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall, she required a drink. The Miami-born Mendes, 33, is of Cuban-American background and first made a name for herself when she starred with Denzel Washington in 2001's Training Day. She played Will Smith's love interest in the 2005 comedy Hitch, as well as in the screen version of the Marvel Comic Ghost Rider, with Nicolas Cage. Come fall 2008, Mendes will be seen in an all-star remake of the stage and screen comedy The Women, costarring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Bette Midler. For 2009, she has already finished the thriller The Spirit, directed by Sin City and 300 creator Frank Miller. New Face of CK Fragrances The same day news broke about her being in rehab, CNN Money also reported that Mendes, a previous spokesperson for Revlon, is the new face of Calvin Klein Fragrances, in an ad campaign that is slated to launch this fall. Previous actresses and models who have been affiliated with Calvin Klein fragrances, the company said in a press release, include Kate Moss, Scarlett Johansson, Christy Turlington and Natalia Vodianova. 6. Here's some good news, sort of: People Exclusive Britney Spears Now Under 14-Day Hold By Ken Lee Update Posted Sunday February 03, 2008 12:40 PM EST Originally posted Sunday February 03, 2008 10:15 AM EST Britney Spears Photo by: INF Britney Spears's hospitalization has been extended to an additional 14-day hold, a source exclusively confirms to PEOPLE. Only her psychiatrist would've had the authority to request the involuntary stay. However, it's possible the singer could be out earlier if she legally demands to be released or her doctor deems her well enough for outpatient treatment. What is life like for Spears at the Stewart & Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA? According to the patient's bill of rights at the hospital, she is allowed to wear her own clothes and keep her own personal possessions, including toiletries. There are two wings at the hospital, separated by a kitchen/dining room. Patients sometimes mix, especially for smoke breaks out on the deck, which is gated and surrounded by a metal fence. The average patient sees his or her attending doctor every day. Since UCLA is a teaching hospital, the attending doctors are often accompanied by students. Staffers check on patients at least once an hour, even during the night. She may also see visitors every day and make and receive phone calls – but not on her personal cell phone. There are pay phones on the floor. 'It's a Terrible Situation' The Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital is known as one of the top facilities of its kind; still, "It is a terrible situation," says a source close to the Spears family. "Britney is in a padded room. Her family is so worried about her." Terry K. Wasserman, a veteran L.A. attorney specializing in mental health cases (who’s not involved in the Spears matter), explains that if a patient becomes combative, he or she "could be placed in a 'quiet room,' some of which are padded." Wasserman adds: "Another possibility is being confined to a bed by leather restraints. In extreme, life-threatening situations – when the patient is a threat to oneself or medical staff – a psychiatrist can inject a person with psychotropic medication." In addition, Wasserman says, "a doctor can force a patient to take prescribed medication. If he or she resists taking the meds, the psychiatrist can obtain authorization to forcefully medicate the person – but only after a hearing on the matter takes place." •With reporting by ALICIA DENNIS and ELIZABETH LEONARD (Source: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20175807,00.html)

  9. Jake Is Taking Heath's Death 'Harder Than Most' By Bryan Alexander Originally posted Wednesday January 30, 2008 06:15 AM EST Ledger and Gyllenhaal in 2005 Photo by: MarionCurtis / startraks Heath Ledger's sudden death has been especially tough on his good friend – and Brokeback Mountain costar – Jake Gyllenhaal. The actor, who is godfather to Ledger's two-year-old daughter Matilda, has been devastated by last week's news. Says one Gyllenhaal friend, "Jake is taking this harder than most people." Nowhere is that more apparent than on the New Mexico set of Gyllenhaal's latest movie, Brothers. "This has had a strong personal effect on [Jake]," says a set source. The insider adds that Gyllenhaal left the set immediately after learning of Ledger's Jan. 22 death – but he flew back on a commercial flight to shoot an additional scene on Thursday. "He was there, but he wasn't with us. It was obviously a major trauma," says the movie source. "These guys were very close. [Jake] was sitting in the director's chair staring off into space." Gyllenhaal has been off since shooting that scene, and was photographed Saturday looking subdued with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon in Los Angeles. Set sources say director Jim Sheridan is shooting around the grieving actor during his personal leave. The 27-year-old's somber mood is a sharp contrast to the happier times on the set of Brothers. During one intense early prison scene, Gyllenhaal jokingly reached into his pocket and took out a picture of his Brokeback beau to stick on the prison wall. "Like those prisoners put [loved ones] on the wall, but Jake's was Heath Ledger," one set source recalls. "That was hilarious. It was a nice moment." The source adds, "When you think back on it now, it's touching." • Reporting by ALYSSA SHELASKY (Source: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20174820,00.html)

  13. Britney's Rocky Reunion with Her Mother Originally posted Tuesday January 29, 2008 07:00 PM EST Lynne and Britney Spears Photo by: Cousart-Ramirez-Rios / JFX Britney Spears is having some family bonding time with her mom – but the pair have been seen arguing, according to sources. Lynne Spears, who arrived in Los Angeles Monday, accompanied her 26-year-old daughter and pal Sam Lutfi to a Mercedes Benz dealership in Beverly Hills Tuesday morning – but it was not exactly a happy family outing. "Lynne and Britney were arguing in the car the whole time. They're both upset and arguing, not having a good time at all," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. After 15 minutes at the dealership, Britney drove a black Escalade off the lot. "After she came out, she pulled over to the side of the road to argue with her mom more," adds the onlooker. The previous night, Lynne had visited her daughter's home, but then was left to pace around the house after Britney left the house to meet Adnan Ghalib. “Lynne, at one point said, 'I just want to give her a hug. I'm very worried," says a source. "Lynne was so nervous and worried, she just kept asking how they could get her daughter back home." When the pop star did return home, Lynne, Britney and several friends including, Alli Sims and Sam Lutfi, had a "family bonding session over a lot of things," says the source. But the family time does not seem to have changed Britney's behavior. On Tuesday afternoon, she and Lutfi visited a nearby J. Crew, where an onlooker described her as "totally out of it." "She was talking in a slight accent. It was a little of a British accent," says the eyewitness. "She kept to herself, quiet, she just wanted to go. She really wanted some Bubblelicious gum and she kept asking Sam for it and got frustrated when he didn't have any. Her mood lifted when she found some in her bag." • Reporting by JENNIFER GARCIA, MARY MARGARET and PERNILLA CEDENHEIM (Source: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20174769,00.html)
  14. Speaking of Britney news, here's some now: The Epic Battle Between Britney and the Courtroom Continues Britney actually made it to court today. High-five! Who cares if she didn't make it into the actual courtroom? Last time she never even made it out of the parking lot. But today she actually bypassed the paparazzi entirely by going underground. (Hmmm, we're really starting to wonder if the elaborate underground tunnel rumors are true.) It's definitely a marked improvement...though, not improvement enough to get her visitation back. But by the next emergency court date, we have total faith Brit will at least get far enough into the building to look the beast in the eye. And the emergency court date after that? She'll totally slay it. Remember how many depos it took to finally get her to stay for a significant amount of time? Until then, all we can do is ponder why, oh why, Brit just can't force herself into a courtroom. (Source: http://www.eonline.com/gossip/hum/detail/index.jsp?uuid=a9c79c61-aa4b-45d4-b462-28ad0828e77b)

  18. Here's some news: Heath Ledger's Family Speaks Out on His Death TUESDAY JANUARY 22, 2008 10:30 PM EST Heath Ledger's father Kim (from left), mother Sally and sister Kate Photo by: Newspix / Rex Heath Ledger's father Kim has spoken out following the shocking death of the 28-year-old actor Tuesday in New York. According to a statement from the family: Heath's family confirms the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda. He was found peacefully asleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper at 3:30 p.m. U.S. time. We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their well wishes and kind thoughts at this time. Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him. He was a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and selfless individual who was extremely inspirational to many. Please now respect our family's need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately. (Source: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20173180,00.html)
