[NEWS] Peter Van Wood: 'Coldplay copied me'
Legality-wise, it's very hard to take someone to court over melody/chord progressions. Most of the time people sue over whether or not someone stole their lyrics. Millions of songs have probably been recorded by now, and considering music has a mathematical pattern behind it (what key you're playing in, etc) it's very hard to try and prove that someone heard your song and knowingly plaguarized the music and wasn't just following the musical key, especially if it's just the chords. It's not like you can really OWN the idea of a chord pattern, anyway. If the vocal melody AND the chords are extremely similiar to another song, then you could probably take it to court. However, I listened to this song and couldn't believe this old fart actually thinks Chris Martin ripped him off. I highly doubt anyone in Coldplay has ever even heard of this guy or his song. It's ridiculous and I highly doubt he will get anywhere with his case.

Show Us Your Pets!!!
This is my dog Rusty!! He's about 11 years old now, love him very much. He's a Cockapoo (what a ridiculous name) = half cocker spaniel, half poodle. Very crazy and cute, gets all the attention from the ladies haha. His eyes aren't really an evil yellow like that, it's just the flash :P

Disappointing
why shouldn't i defend coldplay? they're pretty much my favorite band, next to the beatles, and i think it's unfair that they get criticized so heavily on an album that anyone else would have released and would have probably gotten praised for. i understand that you're probably being half-sarcastic (in note of all your smileys there haha) but i just get tired of reading people like pitchforkmedia.com giving all of coldplay's albums a 5 out of a 10 rating, then meanwhile they're give 9 out of a 10 rating to some indie artist who thinks he's the next kurt cobain because he's half-learned how to play a guitar last year and now thinks mumbling incoherent, non-connected, forgettable melodies over some typical chord progressions is considered "epic" and "avant garde". music is in a horrible state these days. i'm sorry to say it, i know i sound like a music snob, but it's true. i don't like hip hop (personal taste), and 99% of indie music is absolute garbage created by people who don't know a single clue about attractive melodies or creativity. the saddest part is we have a bunch of saps (music journalists) who commend these horrible indie artists as being "groundbreaking" due to the sheer fact that only a small minority wants to listen to their music. there's a difference between being "lo-fi" or your music just simply sucking too much to break a certain level of popularity. a lot of indie music falls in this latter category. the thing that irritates me is the fact that these music journalists, they act like they really know what they're talking about. do they really have a clue? i mean, you're a journalist, so you go to college to be an english/journalist major, right? so you're well-qualified, right? if you want to become a music journalist i think it should be required they minor in music as well just so they know the type of hard work it really takes to create a great song (as coldplay does) as opposed to flinging out songs no one will ever remember by next year once the hype wears off (pretty much everything praised at pitchfork). Ok, sorry, I went off on a tangent there. And also, I do think Coldplay care for their fans. Why wouldn't they? They've been posting new updates, videos, pictures, etc, on their website almost weekly, which is really awesome to see all these cool videos about where & how they played their first gig, etc etc. It's fun for me to see all that history about them. And it shows they care. I realize they're not the ones physically updating the site, however, they're obviously sitting down to do these interviews, writings, and such that are featured on the site weekly, so obviously they're getting involved with connecting to their fanbase.

Disappointing
Wow! O, ye of little faith :) What's with everyone dissing X&Y so harshly and saying things like, "This 4th album is going to make it or break it for me" ... ouch. Hasn't Coldplay proven it enough by now that's they're great songwriters and that they will more than likely continue to be? Don't get me wrong --- X&Y was my least favorite of the 3 albums -- but it still had some great tracks on it. I think it was a combination of wrong circumstances that made that album more lackluster than the previous two .... situations like the fact that they admitted themselves in interviews that why X&Y took so long was because they started to look at it like going to the "office" every day to record, not really jamming together that much, not having Phil with them, probably getting a bit sick of each other from so many years of touring, etc etc. I'm sure that happens to every band. They're human. But come on! Coldplay has written so many fantastic songs. Like others have said...X&Y was a bit flat, but compared to 99% of the shit that comes out in the music industry today, it was at least LISTENABLE for me. Do you know how rare that is to find in an artist nowadays? Some of my favorite tracks from them are b-sides that never got released, and in my opinion, were always a bit "edgier" than some of their a-sides. (Murder, Animals, 1.36, I Ran Away), etc. I'll never know why they never released those above songs, because they're so freaking brilliant, and I was dissapointed they didn't take the more experimental path during X&Y that I was hoping they would when I heard those AROBTTH b-sides. I have a feeling it was probably due to label executives convincing them to play the safe route and go for the big, epic band thing and use the safer material -- go against the uniqueness that founded Coldplay -- and conform. It was too much and I think it was painfully evident to Chris Martin and the rest of the bandmates that they should have listened to original instincts when Chris said at that one awards show about how they're were going to dissapear for a while because they knew everyone was getting sick of the huge promotion/hype X&Y was getting. Anyway --- even though I wish X&Y would have been a stronger record it was still 10x more enjoyable than half the other crap I hear from the music biz today. I really just have this faith instilled in me that I just....know....this 4th album is going to be awesome. I really think Chris has finally gotten comfortable in his own skin and is going to listen to his instinct rather than trying to become the new Bono and be what the label execs tell him to be. I bet the spark has been refreshed in Coldplay, especially getting to work with such a huge force as Brian Eno (let's not forget this is the guy who made U2 unforgettable!) ....and I'm sure Eno is pushing them to the experimental levels that they always deserved to go to. I really believe Prospekt's words that this will be "the album they'll be remembered by". I can't wait! :)
