Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
I listened. First its only two chords for 30 seconds and not nearly the entire hook of the song. Pink Floyd didn't invent a slow strum on reverb on clean guitar which is mostly what you think is the same. Floyd also picks all over it on the second chord with that falling note progression to totally change the groove of the song. So what you're complaining about is that for four chord strums Satriani used a technique taught to everyone using reverb on the planet. If Satriani took a nearly identical phrase/melody over identical (one is sonicly the same, the others are the same) chords that had the same groove from Floyd you'd have a point, but he didn't and Coldplay did. Point in case: The Coldplay song sounds exactly the same. I like rain sounds nothing like the Floyd song except for 4 chords of a standard rock progression and reverb. Uh yea, thats it.

Why wouldn't you think that? Satriani is a famous artist. He wrote a song. A few years later a pop band released a song that sounded almost identicle except they sang his notes instead of played them on a guitar. Its not like the music is different or its a sample in a hip hop song or something. They sound the same. Yet for some reason you think that's CRAZY!

You're kidding right? Umm... if a song is #1 it is 'mainstream'. When have Coldplay 'not' been mainstream? Like, 10 years ago? Show of hands everyone... everyone who was a fan on here 'before' Yellow, please speak up. Why so quiet? Coldplay and VLV is the personification of music manufactured for and consumed by the mainstream.

Oh, its quite snobbish. However, the fact reamins that its true. Uh, creative? Is that why Martin ripped off JS? Its great you like Coldplay, I know that. But I'll reiterate: every credible musician or critic alive (including Chris Martin) at least respects Joe Satriani if they don't like him. Coldplay does not have that respect. And that absolutely counts wether its elitist or not. I guess I'm rude. Sorry. But I don't really disagree. Satriani is amazing but lacks what I truly look for in music. Hey, he plays for himself. I'm pretty sure if he wanted to write pop songs and make millions he could. Its not difficult. See: John Mayer. Or, see the satriani song popized by Coldplay above. The true fact of the matter is that Satriani is not massive because he plays guitar. If he had a vocalist he would sell way more albums. Thats fact. In comparison to what? The Beatles? yes. Coldplay? Considering the songs sound the same I think you're on the losing end there. Thousands of people can't Shred like Satriani or Vai BTW. Those types are few and far between.

Speaking of dumb, how stupid do you have to be to insult your friend's decent taste in music and sig links when you're talking to me?

See... now here I am in a forum called Coldplay: The Band, The Music and what am I talking about? Well. Coldplay. The band. And about their music. Go figure. So why am I here? Welllll.... shall I repeat? To 'talk' about Coldplay the band, and their music. Its just that simple.

? I'm not trying to change what people think. Nor did I say Coldplay changed their sound on a major label. (althogh its likely as its such a common thing). I have not listened to 'old Coldplay' enough to know that. It is pretty likely though. There are about 1 million examples.

Yet you have no evidence to support that other then them claiming they didn't. The songs sound undeniably similar and have the same notes. I wonder what you know that I don't.

I do, but he's not cracking that list or even coming close. Joe is a phenomenal talent and writes some fantastically brilliant songs, but hey, I have high standards. Joe's ability alone prolly out does almost all of them and most of them combined, but he's no where near my favourite artist.

Well, SwallowedInSea(men) (my apology, could not be helped and won't happen again. :) ). I don't think its really a genre of music, but I do think being signed to an independent label affects the sound of the music. Major labels have one goal: selling lots of records and making money. They are big enough that they don't actually 'need' any of the artists they sign. When they sign a band they usually do it when they're small. So, the label owns everything the band produces and holds all the cards. So what happens when the major label's producer for their new band's says 'you know what, I don't like the song this way, you'll have to change it." The band can say no, and the major will say 'okay, well we already own all your songs and you owe us for the use of our studios, the advance we gave you and the legal fees we've sepnt on you, so you can pay us back with nothing to make money with or go bankrupt and start over from scratch." Well, bands often choose option 2 which is change their sound to what the label wants and take it in the bum so they can continue to exist as a band. What they lose is control of their music and they are not really artists anymore but creative pawns of the label. Independent labels do this too, but tend to be more about the art then making music to sell millions of copies. Indie labels often need their band's a little more and are not as adept at or motivated to manipulating/screwing their artists over. It makes a big massive difference, if you care about what you listen to every day.

Wow, regarding plagurism (my word) it looks like you just copied about a half billion people on the internet. Way to knock it out of the park.

I agree there, except that Satriani's guitars are always a little uh, big and brighter... Santana's thinner and more bodied. I really prefer Santana... he can't shred but Satriani lacks soul and grit. That's the prob with people who spend all their time trying to play fast. Gots to balance that shiz.
