The Pogues? and Swallowed in The Sea?

Featured Replies

hey i just read that the band used maybe the same kind of influence kraftwerk had on talk, with maybe the band the pogues on swallowed in the sea...

Musically, the band has never sounded more adventurous, referencing everyone from Kraftwerk ("Talk") to the Pogues ("Swallowed In The Sea")... its from http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006L16N8/ref=ase_cddb/104-1314035-5811957

but if this is true i'd like to know who this band is cause i've never even heard of them and then if anyone does know of them and of this "influence" of what not do they also know which one of their songs coldplay used to influence swallowed in the sea? and i must say wow i'm suprised i'm just learning of this now.

Today I've bought the german version of rolling stone.

Chris talks about the tracks of X&Y (I try to translate little parts of it, but my engl. isn't that good).

Influences

SQUARE ONE:

We tried to make a song like Kraftwerk (This composition is the first official song which is done by Guy and Will and not by me - programming on an old Drum-Computer.)

WHAT IF:

Should sound like John Lennon.

WHITE SHADOWS:

We had Tears For Fears and The Cult in the Head.

FIX YOU:

We borrowed from Jimmy Cliff the line "There's so many rivers to cross".

X & Y:

We had this track very early but we thougt it's boring. One night at home I listened to old Beatles records and saw a making-of of "Dark Side Of The Moon" and then I come up with the idea to play the song in a 60's style.

SPEED OF SOUND:

We tried to write a Kate Bush song. I've heard "Running Up That Hill" and liked to have a song with the same atmosphere. Even the chords are similar.

A MESSAGE:

Even we had to deliver the album on january there was one song left, somehow. Remaining just one idea - the melody of an old church song which we sung a lot when we were children "My Song Is Love Unknown". Suddenly one night I know how it goes. I ran - without clothes - downstairs to the living room, took the guitare and the whole song came in 5 minutes.

THE HARDEST PART:

We wanted to write a R.E.M. song

that's it. plz don't blame me - me and my engl

well i found it, and i found what sound of the Pogues they were basing it off of. it was Fairytail of New york featruring Kirsty MacColls but it's not like Talk and Kraftwerk they didn't take a riff, they just took the song and wanted to make a better version of it for example, not using it as a starting place but, something like that. i listened to both and well they really don't sound too similar at all :/ coldplay succeeded in making a better version all right :)

http://www.pogues.com/, for The Pogues. I haven't listened to their stuff at all, but I'm sure their material is all over P2P networks. Swallowed in the sea is one of my favourite songs on x&y, I've been working on the album in chunks since I got it last week, though after finding out about the copy-protection, I was all ready to return it, glad I didn't now.

yes thats where i got the song from the pogues, it's rather celtic sounding so it's really interesting to imagine them related but hey maybe.

The Pogues! Quite possibly the greatest Irish drunken middle aged band ever! I cant really believe they influenced some of coldplays songs because they sound so different.

Swallowed in the Sea reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel's Secret World from Us. In fact this album is a lot like that one all the way through. The moment at the end of "White Shadows" when everything cuts out but the synth and Chris sings over it is nearly identical to a part in "Love to be Loved." Both albums are very nakedly personal while using simple lyrics, but I think the Peter Gabriel one is better. It has "Blood of Eden" after all. :)
