July 6, 200520 yr Not moaning, and sorry if this has been mentioned before but I thought Coldplay said they'd never lend their music to film soundtracks?? What happened?
July 6, 200520 yr Author yes it did surprise! They changed their mind... :P :P Haha! Would seem so! I've always thought a) Good choice, not 'selling out' etc. etc. OR b) why not?! some tracks would fit some movies perfectly! Just waiting for the build-up ending of 'Fix You' to find it's way into some teen romance film :P
July 6, 200520 yr Author Haha! I knew it! Which film?? When they played it a while or so before X&Y came out I rang my friend and told to wait for that track to end up being the background to some epic closing scene, or the final episode of a documentary when all the kids graduate and say final goodbyes and so on...
July 6, 200520 yr Author I know it's a teen show. ;) Telly seems kind of different to me in terms of soundtracking, don't know why...
July 6, 200520 yr the soundtrack was about the only great thing about that movie.. lol I think it fit the film well.
July 6, 200520 yr Their songs have always been on tv programs, movies..commercials..since a long way back..well from what I remember 2003.. They did say they didn't wanted their music to be on commercials or whatever.. but I don't know if they have much control over that..
July 6, 200520 yr They've never sold the rights to any of their songs for any ads. They turned down 9 million dollars from Gatorade because they wanted to use one of their songs (forgot which one... think it was Trouble) for a commercial. They don't want their songs tacked onto sneakers or shampoo or something like that, they've said that many times. The closest their songs have come to being used in "advertisements" was 'Yellow' as the ABC "anthem", which doesn't really count, considering that it's not really a product. And 'Clocks' in the Peter Pan trailer. They're songs (most especially Clocks) have been used by many TV shows (Documentary type shows and the like) and have also been used in the O.C., which, despite it being the new Melrose Place, has a pretty good soundtrack. And then of course two or three of their songs being used in the awesome HBO show "Six Feet Under". And then the one movie, Garden State, which was excellent and very original. What's also cool about that is that actor/writer/director Zack Braff hand-picked all the songs used in the film, and he chose Don't Panic to open the movie. :) But no commercials for Coldplay. Good for them. ;)
July 6, 200520 yr the genius that is zach braff decidd to use dont panic in the opening scene, then asked coldplay for their permission. Coldplay liked how the song was going to be used and said he could use it for free, no royalties or any other fees
July 6, 200520 yr In Australia for about two months this year Don't Panic was played on the main add for one TV station and the add went for about 40 seconds and was on every single add break.
July 6, 200520 yr I thought this at first too but Garden State is such an amazing movie (and a fantastic soundtrack, Go SHINS! ) I didnt really care :D
July 6, 200520 yr I thought this at first too but Garden State is such an amazing movie (and a fantastic soundtrack, Go SHINS! ) I didnt really care Yeah GO SHINS INDEED! :D
July 6, 200520 yr The Scientist was in the end of Wicker Park A cover. And a horrible one at that. >.>
July 6, 200520 yr Does anyone know what the royalty fees are if the band gives permission for a tv show or movie to play their song? I thought there wasn't-i thought the permission was because of copyright issues. Don't panic came out in 2000, Garden state came out in 2004-so it's not like colplay was selling their song to increase popularity. If anything, i thought the record company received the royalty fees, not necessarily the band...i don't know much about the music industry, i am curious to know though.
July 6, 200520 yr I think they (the band) they get a very small precentage.. maybe even pennies worth.. but thats the recording industry for you.. *shrugs*
July 7, 200520 yr The Scientist was in the end of Wicker Park A cover. And a horrible one at that. >.> I got it on a Divx, and at the end, it's really Coldplay - The Scientist version, not the horrible cover
July 7, 200520 yr when did coldplay say they would never appear on a soundtrack? granted i read in Q magazine them saying they didn't want to lend their sound to commercials where their music would be pushing products...but in a movie (especially a good movie like garden state) their music was only used to enhance a mood or give emotion to the scene. if the music is used well, it's no crime.
July 10, 200520 yr Thats when i first checked into that song. Just the fact that coldplays music was on the movie makes me want to watch it...which is sill. But, i know this is not about Coldplay...but what is the movie about???
July 10, 200520 yr why not have your music in movies, if done properly like garden state..it makes your music more powerful to be used to multimedia/
