Coldplay to play at Junos

Featured Replies

I read this morning that Coldplay are on slate to play at the Juno awards. (Canadian music awards for you who don't know)

What kicks bum is the fact it is in my hometown of Halifax. WE're small but we rock!

International superstar pop band Coldplay will make its Halifax debut at the 2006 Juno Awards in April.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced today that the global chart-topping British quartet will join Canadian acts like West Coast rockers Nickelback and Canuck king of swing Michael Bublé on the April 2 live CTV telecast from the Halifax Metro Centre.

"Our Canadian fans are extraordinary — we love Canada!" said Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin in a CARAS news release today. The band has had a steady stream of number one singles in this country, and its concerts routinely sell out in minutes. Coldplay’s Halifax stop comes at the beginning of its North American tour in support of its latest CD X&Y, which debuted at No. 1 in 32 countries (including Canada), and is nominated for three Grammy Awards in the U.S. and four Brit Awards at home.

"These three world-class acts underscore how the 2006 Juno Awards continues to grow in both prestige and popularity as Canada’s pre-eminent awards broadcast," said Susanne Boyce, CTV’s President of Programming and Chair of the CTV Media Group, in the same release. Last year’s 2005 Juno Awards telecast from Winnipeg hooked 1.34 million viewers for the entire show, with more than 5.7 million Canadians watching some part of the program, an increase in nearly half a million viewers from the 2004 broadcast.

A limited number of tickets for the Juno Awards Gala go on sale on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. for $50 to $125 (plus taxes and service charges). Tickets will be available online at http://www.ticketatlantic.com, by phone at 451-1221 or in person at the Halifax Metro Centre box office.

It’s also been a big year for Vancouver crooner Bublé, whose 2005 release It’s Time has sold over four million copies worldwide, with his self-penned single Home becoming the most-heard song on Canadian radio in 2005. He also garnered a Grammy nomination for best traditional pop vocal album.

Nickelback’s last trip to Halifax was on a whirlwind cross-Canada promo jaunt to promote the release of its latest album All the Right Reasons. No stranger to the Junos, Nickelback has been nominated for the awards 13 times, and has won seven of the statuettes, while selling over 19 million records around the world to date.

The nominations for the 2006 Juno Awards will be announced on Feb. 15 in Toronto.
