"You can't come to Cleveland without coming to the back!" Chris Martin declared.

So the Coldplay frontman sprinted to the rear of The Q to serenade the cheap seats with "In My Place." The soul-searching ballad found Martin contemplating his role in the cosmic scheme of things, a favorite Coldplay theme.

You could say this arena-rocking British quartet found its niche Monday night in front of a near-capacity crowd.

Concert promoters worry about which latter-day acts will pack 'em in when veteran top draws such as U2 are no longer on the road. Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bass player Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion proved they're up to the task and made good on the "U2 of their generation" hype. These eager-to-please blokes from London are still in their 20s, but they can work an enormo-dome like old pros.

"Politik," "Speed of Sound," "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" and other soaring Coldplay anthems were ready-made for cell-phone-hoisting singalongs. The 90-minute performance didn't skimp on grand gestures, either.

The band made a dramatic entrance to the spacey tune of "Square One," complete with "Also Sprach Zarathustra"-style riffs courtesy of Buckland.

In the middle of a magical rendition of "Yellow," giant yellow balloons dropped from the rafters and burst to shower concertgoers with gold confetti.

And a cat's cradle of red laser beams crisscrossed the arena during "Clocks."

Stripped-down versions of "Til Kingdom Come" (a twangy toe-tapper written with Johnny Cash in mind) and Cash's own "Ring of Fire" made for lower-key highlights.

When Martin wasn't strumming a guitar while doing a demented jig or banging on a piano like Jerry Lee Lewis on a triple-espresso bender, Coldplay's main man often sang from a crouching position. Picture a bushy-haired ninja with a wicked falsetto.

Every song strove for momentousness. Inevitably, some attempts fell short, including "How You See the World," which split the difference between heavy metal and folk to dull effect.

More often than not, however, Coldplay struck a resonant chord. During the finale, "Fix You," Martin sent a single light on a long wire swinging wildly through the air, a luminous wrecking ball to smash the boundary between the band and its fans.

The message was clear: We're in this together - and the sky is the limit.

Ex-Verve singer Richard Ashcroft turned in a well-received opening set of soulful material from his new solo album, "Keys to the World," although the old Verve hit "Bittersweet Symphony" got the biggest rise out of the gathering throng.

that is quite brilliant.

I LOVED THE DEMENTED JIG!

thanks everyone! I'm glad you liked them!

alrighty.

Out of order. this is all of them. I definitely should have practiced more working with that camera. But enjoy! maybe I will post the actual favorite, clear shots on here later so you won't have to look through all 117. :)

The original files are HUGE and would make a lot of fun in Photoshop for wallpapers.

Thanks hun bun! I'll go check 'em out...;)

First of all, thanks to everyone for the videos, pictures, and reviews. This concert was amazing, the band was so enthusiastic and it was so much fun! I took a lot of pictures that I can upload if anyone wants (i was about 20 rows back on the floor) although the ones that have already been posted are probably better than mine. I also recorded a bunch of stuff on my cell phone including some of the speeches that chris gave which were pretty funny. Here are some if anyone wants them, including what chris said (but just to warn you, the quality isn't that great but you can still definately tell what chris is saying):

"thank you for giving up your monday night football or frasier or whatever you were going to watch this evening or whatever you were going to go do to come and see a little english band, we appreciate it wholeheartedly and we hope we give you everything you expected" (then part of GPASUYF)

http://rapidshare.de/files/16104107/938pmMar20_Speech_about_Jonny__Don_t_Panic.mp3.html

"his name is jonny buckland, 28 years old...??...and i know you're fantastic because you've got the hall of fame but if you could just give him your wholehearted enthusiasm when he sings. its a big thing to sing in cleveland on your own, some of us have practice and others have to really be given encouragement, so when he sings, go crazy!" (then part of Don't Panic)

http://rapidshare.de/files/16104132/953pmMar20_Speech_about_people_in_back_and_light_not_working.mp3.html

"at this point in the concert, i feel it only, only right to mention everyone right in the back to check that you all are ok because its a long way back there and um we hope that you don't feel too detached from everything. don't think we're not thinking about you even if you're that tiny little person like 7 miles away up in the corner, we can see you and we're thinking about you. so thank you so much...(start of Til Kingdom Come)...now for those of you thinking 'why the hell is this light not working, i want my money back' this is in fact deliberate, we're from england and we like to have 3 lights out of 4 on at all times, partly environmentally and partly technically, don't think its some sort of fuck up because its not...that light will only come on when we play!"

I also have a video of chris dancing (what the plain dealer (newspaper) called a "demented jig") but unfortunately theres no sound because my camera doesn't record sound but its still pretty funny:

My friend recorded a few videos (with sound) but i don't have them yet but once she sends them to me i will try to post them.

Hope you all enjoy!

ooooo yeah!

They were so enthralled with the crowd and the same as us, with them! That article even said it was a NEAR capacity crowd, but we definitely made up for it. I mean the place was wild. DTE and the Palace crowd was amateur compared to the Ohio shows.

I don't if it's me, but the speeches aren't playing for me.

The jig video did though! AWESOMe!

Can't wait to see some more videos!

Ooooh!! Thankies so much!! This is like reliving the show all over again. It really was such an incredible experience. Off to download now....

WHAT??????? :-)

I was at the DTE and Palace shows and people were going nuts! There wasn't a single seat available at both of the shows in Detroit. I saw plenty of open seats in Cleveland. In fact, the very back top balcony was blocked off with a huge black curtain because they didn't sell those seats. Every section in front of the stage was packed for the Palace. Marisa - you seem like the biggest sweetheart, but as a fellow Michigander, you got to give some props to your people :-)

Great photos by the way!! Thanks!

I was at the Cleveland show on Monday and WOW did they ROCK!! I was on the floor in section 4... AWESOME!!! How about when Chris ran to the back and climbed up into the crowd!

WHAT??????? :-)

People were nuts at the shows in Michigan and yes it was sold out and full capacity but my god was I dissappointed at the floor crowd for the Palace. I could count 6 ppl around me sitting down! And 2 of them were in the front row! That is kind of shocking to me. Also no one was really dancing around me. The front center row was also stagnant. Chris was laying down his best moves and they just stared.

I just feel that even though the crowd at Cleveland way smaller, they were way more energetic. Everyone on the floor was soo into it. Even at Riverbend, which is sooooo tiny compared to DTE, the crowd was spectacular.

And I could tell the difference right away: some examples..... Chris brought back the " ohhh oh ohs" at the end of the Scientist where the crowd repeats it back to him, and also turned the microphone to the crowd during Fix You. he didn't in MI.

I guess I just was near some lame ppl in MI :P

:) Don't get me wrong Moog, I love all Coldplay fans!

I was at the Columbus show this summer and the Washington DC show a few weeks ago and I thought the Cleveland crowd had a lot more energy as well. Everyone in the house was going crazy...especially during Clocks.

Agreed. The show was near capacity, so I guess it wasn't full, but everyone around me was so into it. I remember walking out of there and telling my friend that I probably love Coldplay fans just as much as I love Coldplay. All of the people I was next to were so enthusiastic and friendly. The girls in front of me were crying when the show ended. It just makes you feel like you're part of something special, you know?

^ Where were you sitting, yellowbug? Did you mention earlier row 9? of what section?

That's such a great statement, about loving the fans. Glad you were around lively part. That is so sweet for those girls to cry. I definitely know what you mean. It's bittersweet. It's cool to know that we were there part of the crowd with thousands of fans and experienced a spectacular show! VERY SPECIAL indeed!
