Capello would leave Juventus

ROME (AP) -- Don't expect Fabio Capello to stay with Juventus if the club is relegated from Serie A as a result of Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus, the Turin club which won its second straight Italian title last month, is making contingency plans for a new coach in case it is demoted from Serie A, a leading Italian sports daily reported Friday.

Capello and Juve executive Carlo Sant'Albano emerged looking grim from four hours of talks in Turin on Thursday and made no comments to reporters.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Capello, who has another year on his contract, was refusing to stay with Juventus if the team is demoted to Serie B.

The paper said Capello has been sounding out the possibility of going to Real Madrid.

According to Gazzetta, Juve's contingency plans include the possibility of Sampdoria's Walter Novellino replacing Capello.

Novellino said he was "proud" to be linked with Juventus, but "I haven't heard from anyone" about a future with Juve.

Sant'Albano is serving as Juve's interim chief executive. He replaced Antonio Giraudo, who, along with former general manager Luciano Moggi, are being investigated for alleging trying to influence referee appointments.

Giraudo and Moggi are also being investigated for possible kidnapping after a referee and two linesmen were trapped in a locker room after Reggina had beaten Juventus in November 2004.

Prosecutors in several cities are probing various threads in the scandal, including suspected illegal betting by players.

Juventus' offices were closed on Friday, a national holiday in Italy.

Gazzetta said Juve officials were trying to come up with a strategy in case the "worst" happens and the club is demoted.

"Whatever happens, we won't find ourselves unprepared," Gazzetta quoted Sant'Albano as saying.
