Former England striker Teddy Sheringham today "categorically denied" giving false details about a speeding offence, his solicitor said.

Sheringham, 41, who won 51 caps for England, was arrested last month on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and questioned before being released on bail.

He is one of three footballers who have been questioned over similar allegations.

Sheringham's solicitor, Henri Brandman, said today that the veteran striker had not been charged and was co-operating with police investigations.

A woman has been arrested by police investigating the alleged speed camera scam, which involves three Premiership footballers.

West Ham players Sheringham, who last week was made an MBE, Bobby Zamora and Shaun Newton were held by officers for allegedly swapping speeding points to beat driving bans.

Police launched their investigation after one of the players was accused of pretending to be the driver of a car caught on a speed camera.

It is claimed this was a cover-up to avoid the real offender receiving three penalty points which would have put him over the 12-point limit and end in a ban.

Zamora, 26, was arrested at his home on the Isle of Dogs last Wednesday. Former England striker Sheringham, 41, was arrested on 15 May when he and his solicitor went to Chingford police station by prior appointment.

Newton, 31, was arrested two days later at his home in Epsom. A woman whose identity has not been disclosed was arrested on 8 June in Morden.

Police were alerted after a civilian processor spotted an image from a speed camera and recognised the driver was not the person accepting the penalty points. An investigation of the footballer's previous speeding fines led to the arrests of the three players.

Sheringham was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to football, honouring a professional career dating back 23 years and more than 950 matches for his clubs and country.

"It was very naive of the players to expect they would not be recognised," a source told The Sun. "An image of the driver is taken every time a camera is set off for travelling over the speed limit.

"It would be a great shame if Sheringham in particular - after such a long and distinguished career - now picked up a criminal record and was possibly even sent to prison."

Sheringham and Newton are looking for new clubs after being released by West Ham.

A Met spokesman said three men "have been bailed until a date in July to various police stations in east and south London", adding: "This is part of an ongoing traffic investigation."

It comes at the end of a traumatic season for the Hammers. The club avoided relegation on the last day and could still be demoted if a tribunal, which begins a two-day hearing today, decides that the Premier League should have docked them points for breaching rules governing the ownership of players.

The club has already been fined £5.5million over the issue.
