Posh: Hollywood women are so scruffy

If Victoria Beckham thinks she is going to be able to acquire new girlfriends effortlessly among Hollywood's showbusiness elite, she should think again.

Just a few days after setting foot on American soil, the self-styled fashion icon may already have alienated vast swathes of the country's female celebrity population by criticising their tatty dress sense.

Mrs Beckham, who has already herself been targeted by US commentators for being over-styled and arrogant, used her first American newspaper interview to bemoan American actresses' penchant for dressing down in tracksuit bottoms and Ugg boots.

In the interview in the LA Times, Victoria first defended her own dress sense, saying: 'I don't want to change the way I dress. This is me, and if people like it - great.

'I get quite bored with the way people look the same all the time, with the same make-up and the same outfit, and the same kind of hair. I like to change things around quite a bit.'

Then speaking about the paparazzi pictures of Hollywood stars she has seen on the pages of glossy magazines, she went on: 'They dress down quite a lot here, don't they?. It seems to be in keeping to go to Starbucks in tracksuit bottoms and Ugg boots.'

She went on: 'I have one pair [of tracksuit bottoms] for non-photographic opportunities only. Underground car parks are fine, but aside from that, no.'

While the public and media have given her husband David a fantastically warm reception, the same cannot be said of the luke warm welcome Victoria has had.

Critics have been less than thrilled by her fly-on-the wall documentary, Victoria Beckham: Coming to America.

A New York Times reviewer said she was scarcely more entertaining than a lump of cheddar cheese, concluding that the programme proved "there is no such thing as celebrity ditz-fatigue."

Her latest comments will certainly will not endear her to Hollywood's women.

What the Spice Girl has clearly failed to notice in a town which is wall-to-wall with stars, is that none of them feel the need to dress up just to go to the coffee shop - like she clearly does. The dressing up in Hollywood is usually saved for dressy occasions - like the Oscars or Emmys for example.

On a daily basis, the biggest names can be seen happily slouching around in the very tracksuit bottoms and Ugg boots look Mrs Beckham is complaining about.

In the last few months alone Penelope Cruz, Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria, Nicolette Sheridan, Pamela Anderson, Charlize Theron, Paris Hilton, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Simpson, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Britney Spears and Pink have all been photographed in Los Angeles wearing just that look.

And as the accompanying LA Times editorial points out: 'Unlike most celebs, she (Victoria) doesn't dress down in slouchy T-shirts, flip-flops and jeans. Beckham dresses, really dresses, for every occasion. Her wardrobe notes might read something like this: June 11: Opening pitch at the Dodgers game - short-shorts and debut of Dries Van Noten platform sneakers. Jan. 16: Dinner date with Katie at the Ivy - frilly organza Giambattista Valli dress, very ladylike. June 3: MTV Movie Awards — vintage zebra-print Azzedine Alaia mini with pink satin bra peeking out. So 1980s, so MTV.'

The LA Times journalist also goes on to describe how Mrs Beckham is wearing 'a mini-dress for a coming-to-L.A. interview' which is 'so short that you can't help but get the occasional glimpse of her pink panties'.

The article is sure to send ripples around Hollywood's fragile starry circles - and give America's chatshow hosts further ammunition.

Just last week, prior to the Beckham's arrival, Victoria was the butt of endless jokes for being too pouty, miserable and over-dressed.

Mrs Beckham also uses the interview to attempt to stamp her fashion credentials on the veteran showbusiness set. Speaking of her collection of clothes, she said that she has kept every outfit, handbag and pair of shoes she has ever worn.

'I would love to have a record of everything I wore on every occasion. If I wasn't so busy with the children I would love to do that.'

She also has hundreds of handbags - including dozens from Hermes. 'I think of them as an investment,' And someday, when I'm lucky enough to have a girl, I will pass them along to her.

The article also reveals that Mrs Beckham plans to bring out a new version of her style bible That Extra Half Inch to help America's wayward stars to dress properly.

In the meantime, she says she is working on her own line of jeans and sunglasses which will be stocked in stores across LA.

'This is just the beginning,' she says of her fashion exploits. 'I want to still be doing this in 20, 30, 40 years' time. I was never going to be the best singer, dancer or actress. I worked hard at it and I did a pretty good job.

'But with fashion, I'm good at it.'

At least not all of them are complete label whores and push their tits up to their nose...

US critics verdict on Posh: Like watching mould grow on cheese

by TAHIRA YAQOOB - More by this author » Last updated at 18:12pm on 16th July 2007 commentIconSm.gif Comments

As an attempt to win over her new neighbours, it was something of an own goal.

If Victoria Beckham was hoping to attract a legion of new fans with her new US TV show, she was sorely mistaken.

For the fly-on-the-wall documentary screened tonight has been universally panned - with reviewers comparing the blow-by-blow account of her life to watching mould growing on cheese.

One of the worst savagings came from the respected New York Post, which described the show as "an orgy of self-indulgence."

Linda Stasi wrote: "NBC should get down on its knees and give a giant thanks that soccer star David Beckham was called back to Europe before it could finish filming his relentlessly self-promoting wife's reality series.

"If this were not a one-shot deal and people were exposed to her vapid, condescending behaviour on a weekly basis....she would be run out on a rail.

"It is an orgy of self-indulgence so out of whack with reality that you will sit there slack-jawed at the gall of these people who think we are that stupid."

lindastasiL1607_100x110.jpgLinda Stasi: savaged Victoria Beckham's TV reality series

Miss Stasi went on to describe her sycophantic entourage "clinging to her every thought as though she were Stephen Hawking."

She added: "This smacks of too much fame, too much money and too much time spent believing the hype for all concerned."

Other US commentators have described Mrs Beckham as "affecting the sullen grimace of a cartoon rodent" while American websites have been inundated with comments complaining "enough already - we are sick of them."

The backlash against Brand Beckham will come as a blow to Posh Spice, who has spoken with enthusiasm of embracing American culture and bringing up her three children there.

With her husband David Beckham hailed the "soccer saviour" with his £128 million move to LA Galaxy and the reformed Spice Girls set to tour worldwide, Mrs Beckham was hoping to cash in by launching her own TV career.

A proposed six-part TV series with NBC was chopped to a one-off documentary called Victoria Beckham: Coming to America.

But if reviews of the show are anything to go by, her TV career will be short-lived despite her move to Hollywood last week.

The influential New York Times compared the programme to a website called cheddarvision.tv, where a webcam is focused on a truckle of West Country cheddar round-the-clock so cheese fans can watch the mould grow.

VicBeckUSPLT_468x369.jpgVictoria Beckham's TV documentary has been savaged by the US press

Reviewer Alessandra Stanley said: "Watching Victoria Beckham: Coming to America is a little like that site - although the cheddar probably has an ounce or two on Mrs Beckham, who is also famous for being thin but with very large breasts.

"The Beckhams market their marriage as the core of their brand yet Mrs Beckham is oddly unsensual on television. She somehow takes the sin out of synergy.

"These kinds of reality shows rely on a fish-out-of-water conceit but in Beverly Hills she is a fish-in-Evian, one rich, blonde, spray tanned wife-of among many.

"If she can retain viewers past the first commercial break...there is no such thing as celebrity ditz-fatigue."

Gail Pennington, of the St Louis Post-Dispatch, wrote: "To the Brits they are Posh and Becks. To most Americans they are - who?"

vicbecksMS1407_468x762.jpgUS critics are less than impressed by Victoria's latest offering

Jay Marriotti, of the Chicago Sun-Times, added: "David Beckham's attempted hijacking of the American psyche has nothing to do with soccer or sports.

"It is about systematically shoving the fame of Becks and his wife, Posh Spice, down the piehole of a nation inundated with enough celebrities."

Kevin McDonough, of SouthCoastToday.com, said: "Mrs and Mrs Posh appear in their underwear and seem to be underfed and decidedly unhappy.

"Victoria scowls into the camera, affecting the sullen grimace of a cartoon rodent but declares: "I am not a miserable cow."

"Thank you for clearing that up, Vic."

The cutting comments are set to devastate Mrs Beckham, who had been determined to dispel the public perception of her.

While promoting the programme she said: "I am not just a miserable bitch who wears nice clothes. There is more to me than the Posh pout."

The programme, which mainly focuses on her and does not feature the children, kicks off with her posing with her husband for a set of raunchy photos for W magazine.

Mrs Beckham is filmed making the move to her new LA home, applying for a driving licence and talking about her new circle of friends such as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

She said: "I know a bit about Scientology but Tom hasn't tried to convert me."

She is also heard threatening to castrate Eddie Murphy - ironically the star of the original film Coming To America - after he dumped her fellow Spice Girl Mel Brown while she was pregnant.

Some US commentators have praised her "dry, deprecating sense of humour" - such as when she is offered a biscuit and says: "I don't want to be seen smiling, having fun or eating."

Her TV flop follows her faux-pas just days earlier when she denounced Hollywood stars who dressed down in public.

Many of the A-list - such as Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz - regularly sport the tracksuit attire which horrified her.

The one-hour special will be screened on ITV1 Tuesday at 9pm.

Beckham is set to make his footballing debut on Saturday, preceded by his own special on NBC titled David Beckham: New Beginnings.

More quotes from the review:

"Beckham, who is bizarrely constantly posing even in her own home, offers insights about how major a certain purse is or how her new phone has changed her life."

"Her entourage laughs at everything she says as though they were hanging with Dave Chappelle, and clings to her every thought as though she were Stephen Hawking."

"The "special" which NBC calls an "exclusive" inside look at Victoria's larger-than-life life smacks of too much fame, too much money and too much time spent believing the hype for all concerned."
