Steve McClaren will receive a £2.5 million pay-off today after England failed to qualify for next year's European Championships.

It is understood he was fired soon after the dismal defeat by Croatia at Wembley which left millions of fans furious and dismayed that England would miss a major tournament.

At a news conference at Soho Square, the FA said they had made a unanimous decision to terminate the contract of McClaren and his assistant Terry Venables at a meeting this morning.

FA chairman Geoff Thompson said the board had ordered a "root and branch" review of the arrangements around the senior team.

He said: "At a meeting of the board this morning, the FA board unanimously decided to terminate the contract of the England head coach Steve McClaren with immediate effect.

"Like every England fan, we are all bitterly disappointed that we have failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

"I know that Steve feels that disappointment more than anyone." FA chief executive Brian Barwick said: "I would like to apologise to the fans personally.

"I care about this passionately. I'm in this job because I care about football and football fans and football teams.

"I understand that we have let them down and I apologise for that." Euro 2008, which is to be held in Austria and Switzerland, is the first major tournament England have failed to qualify for since the 1994 World Cup.

The decision was rubber-stamped at 9am at a meeting of the Football Association's executive board at its Soho Square headquarters.

McClaren had refused to quit as head coach, forcing the FA to sack him. He will receive one year's salary in compensation for the termination of a contract that was due to run until 2010.

José Mourinho was this morning the 5/1 favourite to take over while Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is also a main contender.

The 2-3 defeat prompted angry supporters leaving Wembley to turn on McClaren, chanting "sack him, sack him."

But McClaren was adamant last night that he would not quit, saying after the game: "I'm not stepping down. I take responsibility. It was my job to get us qualified and I failed. I don't want to discuss my future at the moment. I am trying to get over that result."

McClaren had been in charge for nearly 18 months.

Last night's defeat was even more disappointing because England were given an unexpected chance to qualify after Israel beat Russia at the weekend.

It will be the first time England have missed a major championship since the 1994 World Cup under Graham Taylor.

Former England coach Glenn Hoddle said: "We are all disappointed and shocked. Does McClaren deserve to stay? Not really, no.

"The opposition we had in that group, we should have qualified quite easily and finished certainly second, if not top. The results have been poor. Israel gave us a chance and we have not taken it.

"Have we gone forward in the last 18 months? I am not so sure we have."

McClaren presided over a qualifying campaign littered with poor performances and three defeats against major rivals.

England finished third in their group, level on points with Israel, and behind Croatia and Russia.

Fans last night also hit out at the highly-paid star players. Matt Lowndes, 32, from Morden, said: "England showed themselves up for what they are, an average international team, and the manager showed himself to be a below-average coach.

"I don't care who takes over from McClaren as long as it's someone who shows some passion."

He said he was so disgusted at England's first-half performance that he walked out of Wembley at half-time, despite having paid £50 for his ticket.

Ian Etherington, 27, a broker from Bond Street, said: "It was a complete shambles. These players earn £150,000 a week but when it comes to the game they can't play together as a team."

The Centre for Economic and Business research estimated the cost of last night's defeat at £1billion to the economy.

Sacked McClaren splashes out on a SECOND Caribbean villa after £2.5m England payout

In case anyone was wondering how Steve McClaren will manage to spend his £2.5million payoff, the answer is to be found on a Caribbean building site.

The wally with the brolly is splashing out £1.9million on a second villa in Barbados.

McClaren, 46, who was sacked as England football coach on Thursday, already owns a £1million threebedroom property at the Royal Westmoreland resort.

The new one, being built on the same estate, will have five bedrooms and, at 5,000 square feet, be twice as big.

McClaren is said to have completed the deal six weeks ago, when England still had a chance of qualifying for Euro 2008.

He caused outrage among fans by refusing to resign after Wednesday night's catastrophic defeat by Croatia, preferring to wait to be sacked so he could pocket a year's salary in compensation.

Matters were not helped when he was pictured with wife Kathryn, smiling broadly. But if anyone plans a trip to Barbados to remonstrate with him, be warned.

The Royal Westmoreland is renowned for its security.

"Steve loves the island and is overseeing all the fixtures and fittings on the new villa," said a source.

"Once it's built, he intends to use his old villa as a rental property. The new place has wonderful sea views."

Property prices at the resort range from £500,000 to £6million.

McClaren's neighbours include Gary Lineker, who has a £2.5million villa on Flamboyant Drive, footballers Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole, cricketers Andrew Flintoff and Marcus Trescothick, golfer Ian Woosnam, jockey Richard Johnson and former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade, while Andy Murray has also just bought a place there.

McClaren earned his "wally with the brolly" nickname after watching England's dismal performance from beneath a golf umbrella to protect his thinning hair from the rain.

Following his sacking he announced that he would try for another job in football, adding: "I am not one to lie on a beach."

A trip to Barbados to supervise his investments is thought, however, to be imminent.

Yesterday, as he strolled through his home village of Yarm on Teesside, he was asked if he was considering donating any of his payoff to charity since he had done so little to earn it during his 18 months in charge.

With his customary grin he replied: "I ran this year's Great North Run for the Yorkshire Cancer Trust – a charity that is close to my heart. I have always supported them and will continue to do so."

McClaren is not the only one to walk away from England's failure with his bank balance enhanced.

His assistant Terry Venables departed with a £1million cheque to cover his disappointment.

And despite failing to compensate for the management's failings, the players will still cash in from a "pool" of money arranged by sponsors such as Nationwide, Carlsberg and National Express.

Each man's share depends on how many appearances he made during the 12-match Euro qualifying campaign.

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard – who captained the side against Croatia – is in line to receive the largest payment of £150,000.

The midfielder already earns an estimated £120,000 a week although the FA is at pains to point out the players have given their £1,500 match fees since February to charity.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation, said: "Some of these huge sums being given for failure will stick in the throats of many supporters."

Advertising chiefs have been accused of over-reacting after they banned an advert showing a cardboard cut-out of Steve McClaren being punched.

The commercial for Piers Morgan's DVD The Good, The Gaffes And The Ugly saw the hapless England coach hit in the face by a cartoon boxing glove.

But the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre stepped in to block it, claiming it infringes McClaren's privacy.
