My first album thread

Featured Replies

It is currently June 18th, and I just heard the album for the first time. I resisted the Myspace temptations, and even though I had the album yesterday, I put my priorities in order and studied for my final exam instead. Well, this is my opinion, if anyone cares...

I think it was a good album that will take many listens to fully appreciate. it took me three or four times through X&Y before I realized its greatness. I think in a few days Ill really start to appreciate Viva La Vida (and I will always call it that cuz they said choose your own title and Im optimistic). I didn't like that the album seemed more like Coldplay trying to impress people (Radiohead, maybe?) and less like pure heart and passion. There were several Radiohead-ish elements, and at times I could swear Chris was trying to sound like Thom Yorke. It seemed more like a final push to get Radiohead to like them, rather than a genuine change in music style.

Good: "Lost!", "42", "Reign of Love" (didnt like "Lovers"), "Viva" and "Violet", "Strawberry Swing", and of course my fav on the album, "Death"

Bad: "LIT" (thought it should have had the lyrics), "Cemeteries" (maybe it will grow on me), "Lovers" was boring to me

Still unsure: "Yes" has potential, "Escapist" was weird but okay

I really didnt like the artwork either. It seemed like a kind of weak attempt to copy Radiohead again, who are famous for their random, weird, and sometimes disturbing images and phrases scattered about the booklet (see OK Computer).

Overall, I'd say this album has potential. I may not know whether or not I like certain songs until years from now, like how "A Whisper" for me just became a good song.

Also (boy this is a long post), I thought due to their pre-release, "Viva" and "Violet" sounded a little disconnected from the rest of the album. It was hard to throw them in with all the other songs which all seem so different.

I guess Ill do a lot of things different with LP5.

PS. Still waiting on "Famous Old Painters". There is a hint at "Poppy Fields" in the artwork but nothing about FOP.
