Baby's message from the womb

Featured Replies

A BABY has become the youngest person in the world to use Twitter – by doing it from the WOMB.

Every time little Tyler kicks mum-to-be Ellen Menscher it sends an update to the popular social networking site.

Tyler’s updates include “I kicked Mommy” followed by a date and time.

Ellen, an attorney from New York, wore a belt which contained sensors and electronics to monitor the movements of her baby and broadcast what was happening over the internet.

Getting a kick

Dad Corey developed the "Kickbee" device as a way of feeling more involved with the pregnancy and received updates from his unborn child’s Twitter account on his mobile phone and computer.

The device is essentially an elasticated belt fitted with two sensors connected to a micro-controller.

When a kick is strong enough the vibrations find their way wirelessly to Twitter which in turn sends a text message to Corey's iPhone.

“After Ellen first began to feel the baby kick, she’d always ask me to come and touch her belly to feel it," he said.

"But it took a few weeks for those tiny movements to get strong enough to be felt by my hands."

“By the time I could feel it, I realised that I just couldn’t be right there next to her every time she felt the baby being active.

“I was interested in how I might capture the essence of the experience of knowing our baby kicked when I couldn’t be right next to her to feel it with my hand.”

Corey, a 35-year-old Interactive Telecommunications student from New York University, also told friends and family they could log on to Tyler’s Twitter blog to check on his activity.

But little did he know Tyler would become an internet star with more than 600 people from all around the world also choosing to be updated every time he kicked Ellen.

“I was amazed that so many people chose to follow the Twitter account,” he said.

Last week Tyler was born weighing 8lbs 3oz and is already updating a new Twitter account minimensch, with a little help from dad.

Corey, who made the device as part of his university course, says he is now considering selling it and expects it to be priced between £25 and £40.

well they aren't the first parents who do things like that.

there's a group on flickr, where people post a daily pic of their kid during a year or so.

i can understand they want to share their joy, but i think those things should be only for family and not for the whole world.
