Amsterdam Live 2003

Hiya, during the build up and chris being joined by the rest of the band, i noticed jonny is using some sort of block to create that feed back/resonance noise. Im just wondering what it is, is it a magnet?

Can you buy them at music stores?

This device is called an Ebow and thats whats creating the sound. I got one off ebay for about $120 AU so they're well worth getting. It's the same device used in See You Soon, Spies and Swallowed In the Sea, woah thats weird 3 different titles with S's. So yeah, basically it generates endless gain and i'm guessing he's holding it over a certain section of the Humbuckers to generate the screech.

ah brilliant thanks very much for the reply, i love the sounds he can get with it.

im getting me an ebow and slide bar :D

and that is pretty weird 3 brilliant songs starting with s using the same device...weird but good

No problem, its one of those gadget that can really give you some cool sounds for the guitar. It takes a little to get used to using but never the less producing amazing sounds!

The Edge uses an E-Bow a lot too, they are awesome.

From the site: Groups such as U2, Blondie, Elton John, Van Halen, Phil Collins, Queen, REO Speedwagon, David Bowie and Blue Oyster Cult, just to name a few, have thrilled their listeners with the sounds of the EBow. Buddy Emmons uses his on steel guitar. Chris Proctor EBows his acoustic guitar. Windham Hill's Michael Manring has even figured out how to use one on bass guitar! The applications for the EBow are diverse.

i think ill have to wait until after exams to get one, i think i might get a bit obsessive with it's use, an extremely interesting device

i wish they played amsterdam on this tour, i kept on expecting it at their sydney show, i was pretty devostated when they didn't play it.

The Edge uses an E-Bow a lot too, they are awesome.

Actually the Edge uses a similar device called an "infinite guitar" for songs like 'With or Without You'. He prefers it because he says an E-bow is either on or its off, but the infinite guitar offers a lot more subtlety.

And on top of those other songs we listed, Jonny also used it at the end of Warning Sign at Glasto '05, I believe .

sorry to wake up an old thread but, my ebow arrived from the US today :D

i've been mucking around with it for a while and can use it reasonably on a single string.

i was wondering how jonny plays amsterdam, i know from the dvd he's on the D string and im pretty sure he starts off on the 7th fret, then moves up to the 8th, then 12th, 10th and repeats, but i feel like there should be more to it and it doesn't sound quite right to me. also im not sure but is he using the harmonic setting?

so how do you guys play this?

From the DVD I'm quite sure he goes from frets 7 to 8 and then 13 to 12 instead of 12 an 10 as you said. Give that a try.

yeah that sounds alot better thanks :)

thats just repeated until the end then yeah?

i checked tabs for the studio version but the good ones flip around on all these different strings so i don't think its for use with an ebow, studio version sounds pretty similar to the live version but are there any major differences?

also im having alot of trouble finding tabs for the ebow, they all seem to be adapted to normal play, for songs such as swallowed in the sea, see you soon and spies any idea where there might be tabs for them or maybe how jonny plays them?

i wish i wasn't as tone deaf as i am :P

1. Not really, I don't think he uses an e-bow in the studio version, but the live version definitely sound better.

here's what a tribute band has down as the studio version...

2. While they may not mention an e-bow in the tab, the notes are usually still the same.

here's the same band's tab of SITS which features the e-bow slide part. http://www.thecoldplaytribute.com/?mpf=frame

As for See You Soon, in live 2003 he slides from 12 to 10 to 9 on the b-string twice before sliding up and playing 17s16-----s17-----s19s16 twice. He finishes by slowly moving down to 14. Mind you in the studio version he pretty much stays between 12 and 10 on the b-string.

And for spies. He moves back and forth between either 9 and 11 on the e-string, or 14 and 16 on the b-string (he's played both). Its essentially the same at the end of the recording, but live he tends to improvise.
