Tea drinkers have been banned from a pretty walled garden at a historic abbey - for slurping too noisily.

Council officials say people enjoying a cuppa and cake are disturbing the 'tranquility' at 12th century Delapré Abbey.

They have ordered the charity which runs the spot - set in 600 acres outside Northampton - to move its tables and chairs to an area what is currently used as a car park.

Planning officer Andrew Holden said: 'We want to keep the garden peaceful. It was being disturbed by tea drinking.'

Critics say Northampton Borough Council's decision will hit funds.

Abbey manager Graham Walker said: 'The British love historic buildings and tea. It's not like we've anyone to disturb, unless the birds and bees complained."

The Sun source Caroline Whitehouse, 34 - who often visits with daughter Hattie, three - said: 'It's disgusting. In summer the place buzzes with people enjoying beautiful flowers.'
