Coldplay Paper

Hey all,

For english class I have to write about how an album cover relates to the album as a whole, so I of course chose how Liberty leading the People relates to VLV. If you have any ideas or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to coldplaying!

I moved your topic to the CP section. :)

Welcome !

The cover is absolutely essential in that particular album. The painting shows the French Revolution, and the album IS a revolution, especially for the band itself. It's exactly like TV or cinema - they went from black & white - a duality, like X & Y - to colour. The music is much more colourful, and remember that the first song is called Life in techniCOLOR. The band made progress, their universe passed from 2 dimensions to many dimensions. You know what I mean ?

And this painting is about French History, so about a story. The whole album is a story : I interpret Life In Technicolor and its crescendo like a birth, and of course Death and all his friends and The escapist with the same tune in decrescendo like death. There are stories in this album, and those stories make a whole big story. You have Kings -Viva la Vida-, Soldiers -Violet Hill-, and these two remind us the painting.

So, somehow, Viva la Vida or Death and all his friends IS a painting, an artwork.

That's how I feel. You see what I mean ? I know it's not very clear, but it's very difficult to explain in French, so in English ! But I'm definitely convinced about all this, even if it is only interpretation. Think about it, you'll find dozens of interpretations, and that's what is really wonderful with that album, which is definitely my favourite. The band became better than ever.

Good luck with your paper. ;)

^brilliant, i love your interpretation of the album, i love history espeacially 17-18th century and that what got me to listen to the album and then into coldplay...

@ coldplay491 good luck with your paper:nice:

Thanks :) I think the cover actually did the same thing to me ! It piqued my curiosity... But I ofently sucked in History :P

Here's some information on the French Revolution. From this you can support your idea of how Viva La Vida relates to the topic you are writing on.

The French revolution paved the way for the secular system of governance that we now see governing most of the countries of the world. From the perspective of freeing the people from unjust monarchist regimes that committed all sorts of crimes under the banner of religion it can be seen as a successful and valiant effort on the part of the people. But the fact that the whole movement was tainted with a hatred for religion and a will to supersede the will of God has- as some would argue- made the revolution a stepping stone towards the moral degeneration of the people. What the revolutionaries failed to notice was that by abandoning the idea of God altogether they would in effect only be moving in circles only to end up as a system in which man rules over man.

So cool, thank you ;) That's one of the rare interpretations I've been able to make with Coldplay... I don't understand 90% of their lyrics.
