September 13, 201114 yr I’ve been thinking it over, and I’ve found some parallels between the upcoming Coldplay album and the 2009 Green Day album. They are both concept albums, with male and female central characters and a general graffiti artist/anti-establishment theme. The first two tracks on Mylo Xyloto, “Mylo Xyloto” and “Hurts Like Heaven,” set the stage for the rest of the album – as do “Song of the Century” and “21st Century Breakdown.” The third track on Coldplay’s album, “Paradise,” shares more similarities with the Green Day album’s fourth track, “Viva La Gloria,” than its third, “Know Your Enemy.” Whereas “Paradise” and “Viva La Gloria” serve as a cry of freedom for the female character, “Charlie Brown” and “Know Your Enemy” are driving, rebellious anthems for the males. The seventh track on 21st Century Breakdown is a bittersweet ballad (“Last Night on Earth”) – and the fifth track on Mylo Xyloto, “Us Against The World,” is one as well. Until the release of Mylo Xyloto, this list of similarities will have to wait.
