Help Reading Guitar Tabs/Tunings/Chords

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain how to do this? I try to read them but I just get really confused. It's not like things I'm used to reading.

If you can help, thank you SO much :D Cheers!

It's like the 1000th time I'm reading this question, but anyway :D

If you take a random tab like

e|-12-12--7h9-7h9-12-12--7h9-7h9-12-12--7h9-7h9-12-12-\-9-7h9-7h9-|

B|----------------------------------------------------------------|

G|----------------------------------------------------------------|

D|----------------------------------------------------------------|

A|----------------------------------------------------------------|

E|----------------------------------------------------------------|

It's basically a picture of the guitar from above (as if you turned your guitar so that the sound hole points towards you (the neck obviously pointing to the left (at least if you got a usual right-hand-guitar)).

Each row represents one string (the letters at the beginning of the row indicate to what note it is tuned). The first row is the highest-, the last row the lowest-sounding string.

The numbers on the line indicate which fret you have to press while plucking that string. 0 means plucking the string without pressing any fret, x means not to pluck that string (or mute it). Imagine time progressing as you're reading the tab from left to right. If numbers are written underneath each other on seperate strings, you play them at the same time. (the letters on the line indicate certain playing techniques, e.g. h means hammer-on. Sometimes the abbreviations are explained seperately, just check out a couple of tabs and you'll find it eventually).

If there's any questions left, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, hf playing ;)

So it's just a chord while pressing different frets?

I don't really get what you're refering to, but maybe pictures will help (I'm really terrible at explaining ^^):

You gotta look how it fits best. Sometimes you really need to try around a bit, some positions need a lot of practise.

Edit: For some chords you need special finger positions like putting your first finger over all the strings, like here: http://www.planetguitar.net/workshop/chords/part5/barre_finger.jpg

Okay, thanks. That helped :D

Sorry if I'm annoying you but how would you find the tuning for the song (e.g. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face C# tuning)
