Before the encore to Coldplay's two-hour show at Alpine Valley on Saturday night, lead singer Chris Martin came out onstage with a clipboard and announced officiously that he was holding the results from the band's audience ranking. Of the 138 shows so far in Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" tour, the Alpine crowd ranked "in the top one," writes 77 Square.   Even if he tells that to all the other girls, Saturday night's show did buzz with an electricity that probably only comes a few times on a good to

It’s hard to fail when creating a decent dinner so long as you follow the recipe. In the case of Editors’ debut album, The Back Room, the dinner is actually more along the lines of a microwavable meal where Editors thaw out Interpol’s 2004 knockout Antics, re-cook, add a bit of gloss and serve.   The resemblances between these two albums are so frequent and overwhelming that it’s hard to accept Editors as their own entity.   The song is a great representation of what the band has to offer thro

With an unforgettable debut album and a soaring sound that conjures comparisons to U2 and Coldplay, it’s easy to understand why the Editors have had such a quick rise to fame.   In the span of approximately a year and a half, the British group has gone from relative anonymity to being one of the top-selling bands in the UK. Their platinum disc, “The Back Room,” reached the second spot on the UK charts in early 2006, and now the band’s trying to win over US audiences as well.   “I don’t think the

Coldplay on Thursday night was amazing. Go back and re-read that first sentence because there is no amount of italicization I can use to express how good that show was. It surpassed all expectations I had and thoroughly impressed me. It was more than a concert, it was a truly passionate performance, writes seangursky.com.   Basically, the concert started with ‘Life in Technicolour I’ and then we just got more intense then there. The band pulled out all kinds of REALLY fun tricks (which I don’t r

Viva La Coldplay! Long live Chris Martin and all his friends! For almost two hours, the British rockers ruled the world — or at least 15,500 fans — on Thursday night at Rexall Place, writes community blogs at canada.com.   Armed with military jackets, lasers, butterfly-shaped confetti, and unbridled happiness, Martin and his bandmates let their joyous tunes — including Clocks, Viva La Vida, Politik and The Scientist — soar through the sold-out arena.   Theirs was one of those rare sets to fully

Exactly one year ago, I was introduced to a small-town Texas group named Eisley (eyes-lee). I was instantly transported to a place of, although kind of lame, to a place of simple bliss. Their debut album Room Noises is captivating, interesting, and a pure pleasure to listen to start to finish. Although nostalgic in its musical and lyrical characteristics, it also has some depth with dark undertones to a number of the songs. Something I rather enjoy.   Eisley is made up of a family the DuPree fam

With lovelorn Manchester tunesmiths Elbow having supported Coldplay for the last few weeks, we called up frontman Guy Garvey for a chat ahead of the Charlotte show. Here's the official interview of Guy Garvey talking about supporting Coldplay in America:   Hello Guy. You've been with Coldplay for a couple of weeks now, how it's going? It's great. It's a really good vibe. The crew are dead hospitable and the other band that are on, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, are great - we've been hanging out with t

Because Elbow makes pretty rock music, Guy Garvey occasionally tries a falsetto, and the whole thing has a distinctly English sensibility, the comparisons to Coldplay come easily. The bands' differences are real, however, and crucial.   Elbow seems more reliable, more grounded. Garvey's knack for lyrical detail and his droll humor focus on the dramas at hand; he doesn't have one eye on the girl and the other on free-trade coffee, but rather on the facts of life as most people experience them.

Austin, Texas – 23 May 2005 – Coldplay’s video for its newest single, “Speed of Sound” debuted today—backed up by Versa™ TUBE units from Element Labs. In an unprecedented application, nearly the entire video shoot was done with LED lights from a total of 700 Versa TUBEs.   Filmed on a massive sound stage, the video features a delicate, half crescent back wall composed of 640 Versa TUBEs placed on approximately 6” centers. Since the TUBEs were used without diffusion sleeves and the surrounding st

EMI Group, the world's third-biggest music company but struggling with sliding sales in the United States, said Wednesday that it will pay no more dividends until 2009.   The British company meanwhile unveiled long-awaited plans to borrow against its back catalogue of hit songs by artists including the The Beatles and Coldplay.   The group, which has issued two profit warnings since the start of 2007, said it hopes to issue debt secured against revenues from its music publishing arm before the

The Football Association yesterday unveiled indie band Embrace as its choice to compose England's World Cup single, hoping the group's journey from obscurity to triumphant comeback can inspire the team to similar success.   Ending months of speculation tipping everyone from the Kaiser Chiefs to the Streets for the official soundtrack to England's efforts in Germany, the FA said Embrace had started work on the track, entitled World at Your Feet.   But the band made an unlikely comeback by returni

Embrace played their first major date before a home crowd on Monday - a long time coming, according to lead singer Danny McNamara.   The charismatic vocalist repeatedly thanked the 2,000 fans who packed the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, for their loyalty and support.   A tour through past and recent classics included songs from "Out of Nothing'', the superb "Gravity'', penned for the band by Coldplay's Chris Martin, and "Ashes'', an uplifting spirit-soarer that wouldn't be out of place as a World C

This from The Sun (UK) newspaper:   Embrace frontman Danny McNamara has pleaded with my army of readers to help the band get to No1 tomorrow.   Yesterday I told you how a cock-up in counting downloads of new single Nature’s Law could mean the boys don’t hit the top of the charts. The band were woken up by panicked text messages from friends who had read Bizarre — and are now doing everything in their power to overhaul NE*YO in the race for the top.   Someone who will be as pleased as Danny if E

Music giant EMI was said today to be preparing a new £2.4bn takeover bid for Warner Music that it hopes will be more in tune with the wishes of its board.   It is probable that EMI will table an offer that consists mainly of cash and a smaller number of shares than its original £2.31bn approach which was rebuffed by US rival Warner, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The EMI Group, the British music giant that has drawn heavy takeover interest in the last year, said Monday it had agreed to be bought by Terra Firma, the private equity firm led by the financier Guy Hands. EMI, whose recent talks with another buyout firm, Permira, ended without a deal, said it was recommending Terra Firma’s offer to its shareholders. The bid values EMI at 2.4 billion pounds ($4.7 billion).   The song isn’t necessarily over, however: EMI’s shares rose Monday to 271 pence, above

The saga must rank as one of the longest-running, most inconclusive, takeovers in corporate history, writes The Telegraph today.   It has emerged that EMI-owner Terra Firma met with Edgar Bronfman, Warner's chief executive, several times last year, but talks on a deal ran aground yet again over price and the two have not met since. "There are £1.6bn in value terms of synergies out of any such merger but neither side could agree who should get the benefit of those synergies so that deal fell apar
