Now more than ever, Britain's hype machine works overtime, cogs spinning on a predictable wheel of buildup and breakdown.   Propelled by a Pitchfork–meets–Us Weekly editorial fickleness, bands are born and busted in the public consciousness before they even have record deals—which brings us to three survivors of this process. What makes them unique is their scrappy passion. Liverpool's Ladytron have thrived as a highly stylized act that might've gone out with the electroclash trash were they not

ROBBIE WILLIAMS, MADONNA, U2 and QUEEN were among the stars who turned up to be inducted into the UK Music Hall Of Fame at a glittering ceremony in London last night (November 11).   One act had been chosen by TV viewers of a Channel 4 programme to represent each decade since the 1950s. The 90s were represented by Robbie Williams , the 80s by Michael Jackson, the 70s by Queen, the 60s by The Rolling Stones and the 50s by Cliff Richard.   If you disagree with the voters choices, coldplaying.com

Millions of music fans face higher concert prices after watchdogs yesterday cleared a £500million merger between booking agency Ticketmaster and promoter Live Nation, as we predicted back in October   The Competition Commission's decision comes two months after it warned the mega-deal would harm customers. The U-turn caps an embarrassing 48 hours for the quango after BAA won an appeal against an order to sell three of its airports.   In October, the Commission warned a marriage between Ticketma

Universal Music has denied that it plans to make its music available DRM-free on Apple 's iTunes store . Last week rumours were rife that the major record label was going to follow in EMI 's footsteps by joining the iTunes Plus scheme. But Universal has been in touch with Tech.co.uk to completely deny the story.   "The rumour is completely untrue," said Peter LoFrumento, senior vice president at Universal Music, in an email over the weekend.   Of course, a denial of this kind does not mean that

Universal Music Group has completed its $2.09 billion purchase of Bertelsmann AG's BMG Music Publishing, making Universal Music the world's largest music publisher, as well as the largest seller of music.   Universal now owns the BMG catalog, which includes current artists, such as Coldplay and Justin Timberlake, classic artists, like the Beach Boys and The Scorpions, and artists such as Puccini and Ravel. What remains to be seen is what properties will be sold off by the combined company. In Ma

Universal Music Group, the world's largest record business, is among the bidders preparing to submit offers for Bertelsmann's music publishing business by Monday's first round deadline.   Universal controls 12% of the global music publishing market and would become the world's largest music publisher if it acquired BMG's arm, which has a share of 13%. Other bidders include Apax Partners, the private equity firm, and Warner Music Group.   British record group EMI is reportedly considering leading

The Church’s Steve Kilby must really, really hate Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and not like the usual “God, I can’t stand that putz in Coldplay” sort of thing, either. Yeah, he gets to you and me, with his goofy haircut, his holier-than-thou super-hot wife and his constant string of boasting about writing the greatest albums of his generation. But he must really stick in Kilby’s craw: He’s one-upped The Church’s only claim to fame.   Things were going just great until a little band called Coldplay h

Liz Phair struts her stuff, Anthony Kiedis has an Oasis moment   Liz Phair, supermodel? The singer-songwriter made her catwalk debut in Los Angeles recently as part of a GM pre-Academy Awards showcase for cars, fashion and music. If it sounds surreal for the architect of Exile in Guyville to be strolling down the runway alongside Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Eva Longoria and Carmen Electra, Phair thought the same thing at first. "I was kind of shocked," she says of the invitation to participate

A few interesting storylines have popped up online following the publication of the Coldplay article as featured in the 25th anniversary edition of Q Magazine earlier in the week. As a result of the Q&A session with Chris, Guy, Jonny and Will, so far we've seen headlines on Chris's envy of Lady Gaga, Adele and Jay-Z, his wish for anything but an ordinary funeral and crying when Amy Winehouse comes on. The Q article seems to be very tongue in cheek, but boy do the media take the contents seri

We've heard the new song Paradise. Then we heard the news that Rihanna will feature on the track Princess Of China from the forthcoming album Mylo Xyloto. It's a Coldplay day that has pleased some but fueled tension in many - certainly a day that won't be forgotten in Coldplaying circles. Some are calling it progression, others regression; it's a topic that has turned lurkers into posters. What are we talking about? We're talking about Coldplay's 'New Direction'.   We've taken many of your thoug

SANTA ANA–More than 1,400 people gathered at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church church today to say good-bye to fallen firefighter Pablo Cerda.   The church overflowed with mourners. Father Richard Kennedy told the crowd Saint Barbara was the patron saint of firefighters, a remark made poignant by the presence of hundreds of Cerda’s fellow firefighters from all over Southern California.   The ceremony concluded with a slideshow presentation featuring photos of Cerda as a baby, playing soccer for Los

Music companies including EMI, the company behind Coldplay, are under investigation for alleged price fixing in the surging online market.   In the latest blow to the troubled music industry, officials from the US Justice Department are poised to issue subpoenas to leading players as they open an inquiry into the issue.   Although the investigators were tight-lipped yesterday, it is understood that the UK’s EMI, along with Germany’s Bertelsmann, Warner Music of the US and Japan’s Sony are centra

British rockers Coldplay emerged from this month's Q Awards with statues for best album and best act in the world today. On the eve of a major U.S. tour, the recognition makes them look like a band at the absolute pinnacle of success, reports canada.com.   That may be true, but you won't find frontman Chris Martin patting himself on the back. In a phone interview, the mild-mannered 31-year-old was modest about the band's achievements, generally chalking them up to the superior talent of people l

VANCOUVER - Coldplay has been on the road more or less for a year now, but they are good boys and write home often. They write to everyone, nearly every day through Myspace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The top-selling band in the world is also the most connected, writes the Vancouver Sun.   What once was a one-way conversation between rock stars and fans — we release a record and you buy it — has become a 24/7 chum-fest, at least for the Coldplay community. Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy B
