Coldplay round-up: Mylo Xyloto on track for record UK sales; The now infamous 'The Bert Show'; Q Awards interviews

thebertshow_1.pngColdplay’s Mylo Xyloto is challenging Adele’s 21 to become the fastest-selling album in the UK this year after opening with more than 95,000 sales., according to Music Week today in a review of early music sales for this week. They continue:

Coldplay are certainties to debut at number one this coming Sunday with what will be their fifth chart-topping album out of five releases. They begin the week by outselling nearest rival Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds by nearly four copies to one, according to the Official Charts Company. As they head to the top of the artist albums chart, Coldplay will also return to the singles chart this week. Paradise is new at 12 in the chart week so far, one position ahead of fellow new release, the Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen single You Make Me Feel by Cobra Starship featuring Sabi.

Chris Martin was interviewed on The Bert Show (radio) after appearing on NBC Today Show last Friday - nothing unusual about that, right? Wrong. The interview was pre-recorded for playback during their primetime show - but they were forced to hang fire on publishing it because Chris (or Coldplay's publicist) hung up on the show after a heavy bout of questioning on Chris's personal life and Gwyneth Paltrow. 'Bert' from the show was adamant that he did not ask any offensive questions but when he said that: "Gwyneth tweeted that the new album is a masterpiece, but she sort of has to say that, right?" there was a heavy sigh from Chris, then the conversation ended. [You can discuss and listen again to this interview at the Coldplay forum now (thanks Mimixxx & _Tash)]

Interestingly, the Bert Show's written preview of the interview said: "Chris Martin joins The Bert Show for an interview to promote his upcoming album, Mylo Xyloto…and hangs up on us! The cast isn’t really sure what set him off that made him hang up, but then he called back and asked to speak to whoever asked the last question." Hardly surprising, then, when the questions are not about MX, the interview is halted. UPDATE: The Bert Show have now gone and uploaded the full interview and autopsy on their website. That was probably your first and last interview with Coldplay, Bert!

Meanwhile, at the Q Awards in London yesterday, Chris Martin joked that fans should 'burn' their new album Mylo Xyloto for 'warmth' if they buy it and don't like it. Coldplay released their fifth LP this week and have given many unusual reasons why people should purchase the record. Asked what people can expect from the album, frontman Chris Martin joked: "I think its one of our roundest albums, it's almost a perfect circle of a CD, it costs less than £20 and if you don't like it you can always burn it to get some warmth, so it's a three-pronged reason to buy it."

Noel Gallagher's solo album, 'Noel Gallagher's High-Flying Birds' is currently number one in the UK album chart but Coldplay don't think they will take the top spot away from him at the end of this week. Chris said: "I don't think so, we've never knocked Noel Gallagher off anything."

Coldplay picked up the Best Act in the World Today prize at yesterday's (24th October) Q Awards and said they enjoy attending the ceremony because it is like a 'school reunion'. Jonny Buckland said: "You get to see lots of bands and people you haven't seen for ages." Chris added to BANG Showbiz: "It's the closest we get to a school reunion you know, with all the bands."
