If you were to plot Starsailor on a map of Britain and Ireland’s music scene, it would go something like this. They would be east of U2: with the questing drama but showing more strain than Bono and friends. They would be slightly south of Oasis: using a pushy rock drive, but without the sneer or Slade rip-offs.
They would be west of Coldplay: piano melodies and hearts on the sleeve but not the nimble grace Chris Martin can manage. And they would be north of Suede: a hint of decadence but too much working man’s earthiness for real sleaze.
