Coldplay has won best British Group at the BRIT Awards 2012 – an achievement that takes their tally for the BRITs now to seven awards. They also kickstarted the awards ceremony tonight (21st February) at London's O2 Arena with a show-stopping performance of the new single 'Charlie Brown' - backed with an impressive pyrotechnic display from underneath a giant pink neon disco ball. No stranger to the title, Coldplay previously took the trophy in 2001, 2003 and 2006 and also took Best British Group in 2001 and 2003 plus British Single in 2006. Coldplay took the title ahead of fellow nominees Arctic Monkeys, Chase & Status, Elbow and Kasabian.On winning the Best British Group, Chris Martin added: "We are so happy to get this award so thank you to everyone who voted for us, have a great night."
When asked what it meant to win the Brit Award for Best Group during tonight's winner's conference, Chris said: "Oh, everything. All we want to do now is release a fragrance, open a few restaurants and open a theme park, JLS-style. We're hoping to have it tied up by 2016, look out for that. To be honest, most British bands have split up. Blur have gone, Pulp have gone, Take That are on holiday, we're the only British band left on the pitch! But we'll take that."
Chris Martin later joined Noel Gallagher on stage for a performance of the former Oasis man's track 'AKA... What A Life' - Chris took to the piano alongside Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Noel was typically focussed and lead the group through a strong and loud rendition of his track.
