Revenge of the eBay customer sold 'faulty' laptop
A student accused of selling a 'dodgy' laptop on eBay is paying the price today after embarrassing personal information about him was posted on the Internet received half a million visits. Details of Amir Tofangsazan's personal life and pictures of his friends emerged when the computer buff who forked out £375 for Tofangsazan's used laptop on the Internet auction site claimed the machine arrived two months late and didn't work. Having fixed the computer, the anonymous buyer says he found it contained all sorts of information about the seller, 18-year-old Amir. So he put it on a web page for all to see, entitled: "The Broken Laptop I Sold on eBay’. It explains in great detail who Amir is and how he sold the 'dodgy' computer. It goes on to show pictures of Amir’s family and friends, a copy of his passport, and pornographic images the buyer claims to have found on its hard drive. There are also pictures of Amir with a bare chest, with a drawn-on moustache and devil's horns, kissing a girl and sleeping. Not to mention '90 pictures of women's legs'. Finally, the anonymous buyer e-mailed everyone in Amir’s address book and told them to have a good look at the web page, posted on the gossip website holymoly.co.uk. With news about the page spreading like electronic wildfire, it has received almost half a million visits. Last night Amir, from Barnet, North London, said his life had been made 'a living hell'. "I am shaking all over and I fear my reputation is going to be ruined. "I have reported the website to the police who are investigating it and they have advised me to sue the buyer for libel. "They have put photos of me and my family on there after hacking into my hotmail account, as well as publishing personal details and bits of my CV. There are photographs on there from the September 11 bombings, porn pictures and pictures of women's legs which have absolutely nothing to do with me. Some people even think I took them. "The laptop wasn't even broken. It was in working order. The last few days have been a nightmare, some of my friends have seen it and my father is very angry." 'Very distressing for family' Amir’s Iranian-born father Mohammad said: "We have only just heard about this. It is very distressing for the family. I don’t think Amir will be coming back here for some time." The web page begins with a photograph of Amir sitting in front of his computer. 'Hello,' it says. 'My name is Amir Massoud Tofangsazan. I’m 19 but pretend to be a lot older and like to pretend that I’m a big businessman when I’m actually not that clever (Amir will actually turn 19 in October). "On 29th November 2005, I sold a laptop on eBay." The entry continues to give a mocking first-person account by Amir, saying that he refused to refund the buyer’s money then "I claimed to have moved to Dubai and hoped he’d forget about it. "But he didn’t forget about it. He took the hard disk out and behold! One laptop crammed with pictures that I really should have deleted before trying to sell it!" It goes on to say how the buyer was 'highly amused' to find plenty of personal information about Amir, including various copies of his CV 'all with different GCSE grades'. Also revealed is a personal statement by Amir stating: "I am an exciting fun guy who loves to have fun and outgoing times. "I am 5ft 10in tall and dark brown eyes with a nice smile. "I find myself to be very honest on all occasions and I can be a romantic at times. I like to make people laugh at my expense so that they aren’t uncomfortable or upset in any way." Yesterday Amir claimed the buyer had never sent any 'polite requests' for his money back. Since the website had been published, he said his family had received both threatening and racist phone calls, as well as demands for them to pay up £400. "I have very little money and I am working nearly every day," he said. "I am doing two A-levels and I want to become a barrister and I am afraid of my reputation being ruined. "I will obviously be trying to get the website taken down as soon as possible." http://www.dailymail.co.uk

SAS man McNab removes the mask
After years of hiding, former SAS soldier turned best-selling author Andy McNab has officially "come out". He appeared in person at the Hay literature festival to reveal his identity in public for the first time. Beforehand there were strict warnings, enforced by dark-suited security, that no-one could photograph him. McNab left the services to write Bravo Two Zero, about "a job" in the first Gulf War, when he and his comrades were marooned behind Iraqi lines. He said the "security stuff" was still needed - he also did SAS work in Northern Ireland - but he had decided to appear "because it felt safe to do it and.. I like this festival". "I did have a go at doing something like this at Oxford about five years ago," he told the audience. "It got cancelled because they found an incendiary device under a chair." The Londoner who started life in borstal, a juvenile detention centre, before being picked out to join the Army has changed beyond recognition. Stationed in nearby Hereford, he had once come to the Hay festival to see actor Stephen Fry, he said, but turned around and went to the pub when he found out he had to pay. He told the festival audience that he would have probably ended up a panel beater or a bus driver had he not joined the forces. Now he has found "satisfaction" as a writer and mixes in Hollywood circles and reads "Aga saga writer" Joanne Trollope - " the best dialogue writer in Britain" - to gain inspiration. McNab also dispelled the myth that the SAS had been against him writing Bravo Two Zero, and his later work. First kill "The approach to write the book comes from the directorate that runs the special forces... all the books go to the MOD. He said he had been frustrated initially by the angry reaction that the book's publication first received. But "after a while I realised it was jealousy and they had opened up the door to where a lot of other stuff was going to come out". As well as writing - his latest book Aggressor was being promoted at the festival - McNab said he now spends his time helping to recruit soldiers and giving talks. But he recalled for the first time he killed another person - in Northern Ireland - at 19. "We were both a couple of kids... once it was all over and done you get an extra two weeks leave if you get a kill. "Nobody wanted to know that I was scared. So I bought into it and I lied. "Then I saw what I'd done on the news - the 10 O'clock News - and I thought 'I don't want to do that again.'" Asked whether he could understand the alleged British Army cruelty to Iraqis going on now, McNab said he could. He said the soldiers in a war zone were out to obtain the information which can be the difference between life and death. He said the Army had a duty of care to keep the soldiers alive. "These people are fighting a war. People die. So a guy gets a head butt, so what? They are not in the WI," said McNab. http://www.bbc.co.uk

British Museum to host gameshow
The British Museum is to be the setting for a television gameshow based on its galleries and collections. Codex, due on Channel 4 this winter, will be presented by Time Team host and Blackadder actor Tony Robinson. Contestants will use the museum's artefacts to break a code while "locked" in the building overnight. "It seemed such a brilliant place to play a game and at the same time to decipher the past," the show's creator Justin Scroggie told BBC News website. "It has such a completely different atmosphere when everyone has gone home and your voice echoes down 2,000 rooms," he said. Vast collection Codex will feature some of the most famous items from the British Museum's vast collection. Amongst them will be the Flood Tablet, a 2,700-year-old clay tablet inscribed with the Babylonian version of the flood story, which is closely related to the story of Noah's Ark. "They're entrusting us with artefacts that they are preserving for the nation," said Mr Scroggie. "What we're trying to do is give the nation the chance to see them in a different way." Scroggie's previous television credits include Treasure Hunt and The Crystal Maze. http://www.bbc.co.uk

Tourette's Housemate Exploited
Campaigners have accused Channel 4's Big Brother of exploiting a man with Tourette Syndrome by accepting him as one of this year's housemates. Pete Bennett, 24, who lives in Brighton, has a severe form of the condition and swears uncontrollably. Roy Hillard, of the Tourette Association, said Pete could suffer in the house, and parents were concerned their children could be mocked. But Channel 4 said Pete's inclusion could educate people about Tourette's. Pete was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome when he was 14, and admits he had a difficult time growing up with the condition. The aspiring rock singer has said that one of the things he wants to achieve by going on Big Brother is to be a "famous Touretter". Tourette Syndrome is a complex and debilitating neurological disorder, which affects about 1% of the population. It is usually - wrongly - simply associated with inappropriate swearing in public, but this symptom affects very few people with the condition. The most common symptoms are verbal or physical tics, such as shoulder shrugging, tongue clicking. People with the condition may also jump about, utter words out of context or repeat sounds, words or phrase just heard. 'Adverse effect' Roy Hillard, president of the UK's Tourette Association, said it had been against Pete going into the Big Brother house. He said: "I would like to hope that Pete's inclusion will raise awareness of the condition, and do some good. "But, on balance, I think it will have adverse effects. "Pete says he wants to do this for Tourette's. But what worries me is if he's in there for many weeks. "He is obviously not taking medication, and in that atmosphere - which is very stressful, his condition is likely to get worse." And people with Tourette Syndrome could suffer because of the programme, he said. "It could especially affect children. "If people they are at school with see someone on TV with a specific tic, making certain noises or shouting out certain words, some are going to be moved to mock. "It could make the lives of children with Tourette Syndrome worse." Upfront But a spokeswoman for Channel 4 said: "Pete was chosen solely on the basis of his personality. We feel he will be a great housemate." She said no one would be prevented from being a housemate because of a disability. "We feel Pete is a very confident and creative individual who is totally upfront about his Tourette's. "Pete's approach to his condition is very positive, and one which might help educate and inform others. "As we do every year, we have ensured that all housemates are robust enough to survive the Big Brother experience." http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4997314.stm
