  2. Sounding like a hugely good FA cup final. All I can hear every few minutes is Ian screeching from downstairs!!! Come on Liverpool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've got 1 back, let's see some more
  3. Yup! You learn a hell of a lot more by listening (or reading!!) than by talking all the time :P
  4. It was this bit that got me. Which child are they talking about? They want the baby to get the best start in life? Well what about the 11 year old? She's not finished starting her life yet. She's going out at the age of 11, smoking, getting drunk and having sex. How's having a baby going to help her?
  5. ............... I shall leave you for now! :D
  6. of course the down side of the Quays is that the view is spoiled by the Theatre of Sheep on the other side of the Ship Canal!
  7. not been over that way in a while. used to go for walks around there with my Dad and Grandpa before they'd finished developing it all. the whole Quays area is fab where they've refurbished. there's a lot of canal type waterways connecting the different Quays which now have trees, houses and flats along the edges. it would be nice to live there, maybe.
  8. yup!! they sealed off a couple of the bigger quays and they have a watersports centre down there.
  9. noooooooo! if I was going to do that, I'd hop along the road a bit to Salford Quays and go for a swim in the sealed off, clean, oxygenated bit. Maybe that's where the porpoise is headed?
  10. It did have its moments thought. There was the storyline where Imelda the bully was going round shoving asbestos down people's backs.
  11. April - the month in which all the best people are born!!! My cousin was on Blockbusters, way back a few years ago. Grrrr, too late. question removed!
  12. Quite nice actually!!! :P
  13. we watched that too!! that didn't have any sufficiently racy storylines to ban us from!!! it was the episode of Byker Grove where on of the boys put his hand up a girls top. I don't remember seeing him do it, but my Mum spotted it and banned us from watching it for ages.
  14. Spuggy - Gil & Julie -
  15. nooooo wayyyyyyy!! We watched the first couple of episodes of the first series before my Mum banned us because she didn't think it was suitable. We watched it a couple of series after that for a few years. Crikey that's a long time ago!! When it was Donna, Gil, Speedy, Nicola, Julie 7 Spuggy. Am going to have to go on a picture hunt now!
  16. The next series of children's drama Byker Grove will be the last, the BBC has announced. The show's cancellation comes as the CBBC programme strand begins to focus on a primary school audience. Controller of children's programmes Richard Deverell called it "a great programme for CBBC with some ground-breaking stories". Byker Grove has been running for 17 years, and launched the careers of Ant and Dec, and actress Donna Air. The drama, which is set in a Tyneside youth club, was first shown as a pilot in 1989. A full series was commissioned the following year. It has featured several hard-hitting storylines, including drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and abortion. In 1995, it became the first children's drama to tackle the subject of homosexuality, when Brett Adam's character, Noddy Fishwick, kissed another boy in the back of a cinema. Launchpad for success Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly played PJ and Duncan in the programme before graduating to a career in pop music. More recently they have found success as the hosts of ITV1's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and Saturday Night Takeaway. They recently made their film debut in Alien Autopsy. The duo returned to Byker Grove in October 2000 to attend the funeral of youth club manager, Geoff, who died in an accidental gas explosion. Other actors to have appeared in the series include Jill Halfpenny, Denise Welch and Roger Lloyd Pack. The final series of Byker Grove will be broadcast in September on BBC One. http://www.bbc.co.uk
  17. Labour MSP has called for contraception to be added to methadone to prevent addicts having children. Greenock MSP Duncan McNeil was speaking at Holyrood during a debate on the harm caused to families by drugs. He urged ministers to take radical action - including adding an oral contraceptive to the supplies of methadone given to addicts. A Scottish Executive spokesman told the BBC Scotland news website: "We have absolutely no plans to do this." Mr McNeil's call follows the death last year of two-year-old Derek Doran who drank methadone belonging to his parents. "Why are we in a situation where so many of those who are addicted to drugs are having children?", he said. "We know there are dangers of HIV and Aids, that there are dangers to the mother and child from a difficult pregnancy. "As a first step, we need to explore putting some form of oral contraception in methadone, or using other methods. "That way, we could reduce this problem and prevent some of those children coming to harm." He later said he was not advocating that contraceptives in methadone should be compulsory but that women should be "strongly advised" to take it. 'Bizarre suggestion' "We need to ensure, if possible, that as few children as possible are born into those circumstances," he said. "I don't think it's a good idea that when you're addicted to drugs, you should start a family." Liberal Democrat MSP Jeremy Purvis said: "This is a bizarre suggestion which is impractical and almost certainly illegal. "The way forward is to support people with drug misuse problems, not to have a state programme of contraception." SNP MSP Fiona Hyslop said: "The statements we heard in parliament today were extreme, wrong and unworkable." Tory leader Annabel Goldie added: "Anyone coming forward for assistance with their drug addiction needs positive help, not barriers put in their way." A Scottish Drugs Forum spokeswoman said: "Methadone is known to actually increase fertility and therefore people on this prescription need to be advised of such." Rosemary Burnett, of Amnesty International Scotland, said the move could never be implemented as it would contravene Article 8 of the Human Rights Act - which guarantees people's right to a private and family life. 'Completely outrageous' A Liberty spokesman said the organisation had grave concerns about Mr McNeil's comments. He said: "It's completely outrageous that one would interfere with a person's treatment in this way, perhaps even encouraging some not to continue with methadone treatment and instead return to a life of heroin and crime to fund their habit. "It is also outrageous as it would be a gross interference with people's reproductive rights." Glasgow film-maker David Graham Scott - a former addict who took methadone for about 17 years - described Mr McNeill's proposal as "too severe". However, he added that he had witnessed the harrowing suffering of addicts' children. During the debate, Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said she was giving "serious consideration" to drug testing as part of possible contracts between parents and the agencies involved. Independent MSP Margo MacDonald has demanded ministers investigate alternative approaches to helping addicts - including prescribing heroin. http://www.bbc.co.uk
  18. OMG!!! How bad is that!!!
  19. porpoise has been sighted in the Manchester Ship Canal, more than 32km (20 miles) inland. The 1.5m (5ft) long Harbour Porpoise was first seen on Thursday morning in the water and is currently being monitored by marine experts. A spokesman for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team said it was unusual for a porpoise to travel so far upstream, but it appeared healthy. It was spotted close to Latchford Lock in Warrington, Cheshire. The spokesman said: "When last sighted, the cetacean was around 21 miles inland, close to Latchford Lock in Warrington. Fish supply "We are keeping an eye on the situation because there is always a danger it could get trapped in the lock gates or stranded, but so far it seems to be doing fine." The canal is about 60m (197ft) wide and some 9.1m (29.8ft) deep and there is a good supply of fish. The spokesman added there were currently no plans to remove the animal but that would change if it began to get into difficulties. The porpoise, similar to a dolphin, normally lives in seawater but can survive in freshwater for several weeks without suffering ill-effects. The Manchester Ship Canal is 56km (34.8 miles) long and runs from Eastham on Merseyside to Salford in Greater Manchester. Wildlife spotted In 2003, the ship canal was cited as one of the fastest-improving waterways in the UK. The Mersey Basin Campaign, a group set up 20 years ago to clean up the Mersey basin and its tributaries, said the porpoise was proof the North West's waterways had turned the corner. Chief executive Walter Menzies said it was the latest in a string of wildlife to be spotted in the area. "There have been otters, salmon - even an octopus - in the Mersey Estuary," said Mr Menzies. "Hard work and ingenuity have started to pay off and a cleaner, healthier system of rivers and canals is emerging for the people and wildlife of the region." http://www.bbc.co.uk
  20. A 15-year-old boy is being prosecuted in connection with the case of a girl who fell pregnant at the age of 11. The girl from West Lothian - who would become one of the UK's youngest mothers - told a newspaper that she was looking forward to having her child. The teenage boy is due to appear in court in July charged with rape because of the age of the girl, who is now 12. The case has prompted calls for a better teenage sexual health strategy in Scotland. Green MSP Patrick Harvie said it showed that deficiencies in Scottish sex education must be addressed. The Scottish Sun said the girl, who has not been named, had unprotected sex with the boy on a night out with friends in Edinburgh in August. She said she was looking forward to motherhood and hopes she has a boy when she gives birth. The girl added that she thought she would be able to cope as she'd had "lots of practice" looking after young children. "I'm enjoying being pregnant - even though I get a bit of a sore back and sore ribs." Her 34-year-old mother told the newspaper: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping her baby." The newspaper said the girl smokes up to 20 cigarettes a day. Sex education Mr Harvie, co-convenor of the Scottish Parliament's cross-party group on sexual health, said: "I think we need to do away with this notion that sex education is everywhere and that young people have got all the information they need. "There are a lot of myths out there and sex education is quite patchy in this country. "The sexual health and relationships strategy from the Scottish Executive - the implementation of that is going on at the moment - needs to lead to much more comprehensive sex education." The Scottish Conservatives called for society and families to unite to change attitudes towards sex following the news. Health spokeswoman Nanette Milne MSP said: "This news will have shocked many people and the impact on the lives of the two children, the mum-to-be and her baby must be the first concern. "I hope that this incident will draw attention to failings that have allowed such a young girl to go on a night out, get drunk, get pregnant, yet seemingly be ignorant about the risks and consequences." A Catholic Church spokesman criticised "an increasingly promiscuous culture". Family context A Scottish Executive spokesman did not comment on the case, but said: "We have a programme of sex education in schools. "It is something that all pupils should be aware of and it stresses the importance of relationships with a family context." A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the girl's case would be the subject of a child protection review. West Lothian Council said it was providing support and working with the family to ensure that the child "gets the best possible start". http://www.bbc.co.uk
  21. Indonesia's vice president has ordered the evacuation of some 17,000 people living near a volcano, which has been threatening to erupt for weeks. Jusuf Kalla's order came as he toured the slopes of Mount Merapi on the island of Java. The volcano has recently been spewing more lava and smoke, and scientists say that an eruption is imminent. But the threat level has not been raised to the highest alert - a move which would trigger a mass evacuation. "I ask that immediate safety steps are taken, beginning by taking at least 50% of the total population from the danger zone," Mr Kalla was quoted as saying by Indonesia's state-run Antara news agency. Mr Kalla - who also heads the country's emergency situations board - said an eruption was only a matter of time. He was speaking during a visit to Magelang and Sleman - the two districts around the slopes of the rumbling volcano in central Java. Mr Kalla flew over the mountain, and later met some of the people already evacuated from their homes. Mount Merapi, overlooking the ancient city of Jogjakarta, is on Orange Code - the second highest alert level. At least 60 people were killed in Mount Merapi's last major eruption in 1994. It is one of the most active of at least 129 volcanoes in Indonesia. The country is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - a series of volcanoes and fault lines stretching from the western hemisphere through Japan and South East Asia. One of Mount Merapi's deadliest eruptions was in 1930, killing about 1,300 people. http://www.bbc.co.uk
  22. Robbie Williams has met up with his former Take That bandmates in an emotional reunion at a hotel bar. The singer invited the boys for a drink after their sold-out Wembley performance, at the luxury Conrad Hotel in west London. However, when they were delayed by swarms of fans asking for autographs, Williams looked a bit uncomfortable. A source told The Sun: “Robbie looked a bit nervous waiting for the boys. He was sat on his own at the bar in a black hoody." As soon as they arrived though, Robbie got up and greeted Gary Barlow with a big hug. The source added: “They looked quite emotional. They haven’t all been in a room all together for almost 11 years - it was like old times.” After greeting each other, all five disappeared into a private room to discuss Robbie's planned appearance at one of the Take That gigs. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk
