  1. From NYTimes Dear Apple: Brown-Bag It It is a perennial social quandary. What does one say to someone who has been passed up for the Nobel Peace Prize? "On the bright side, you can slap anybody you want now"? "It's not like a real one, like Medicine or Physics or anything"? "Everyone knows MOHAMED ELBARADEI has been buttering up the Nobel people for years"? We were debating how to approach BONO, who was talked about as a dark horse for the prize, when we ran into him at a benefit for the Food Bank for New York at Wooster Projects Gallery. The main part of the benefit was an auction of celebrity-designed lunchboxes. Yes, we just said that. We began by asking Bono, who was with ALICIA KEYS, what he used to find in his lunchbox. "Cheese sandwiches!" he said excitedly. "It was one of the more reliable things in my life at the time. But sometimes there was an apple as a special treat." "I was a Tupperware and cheese guy, too," chimed in THE EDGE. "But I had Bono on the treat. I would get a Mars bar or a Snickers. That beats an apple." Speaking of apples, CHRIS MARTIN was there, though without his daughter or GWYNETH PALTROW. We also saw NAOMI CAMPBELL, GINA GERSHON and MIKE MYERS, who entertained us at length by talking about Canada's subsidized school lunches and his fondness for chips and gravy. But back to Bono, who was explaining his lunchbox. Finally, it was time to make our move. Sorry about that whole didn't-get-the-Nobel-Prize-for-Peace thing. "That's O.K.," Bono said graciously. "I get enough credit." Then, betraying the slightest hint of a bruise: "I don't think the world is ready for a rock star as a Nobel Prize winner. They're never going to give it to a rock star." As the auction began, MARIO BATALI introduced MICHAEL STIPE, who was wearing white boots and suspenders. Mr. Stipe introduced his lunchbox, which was covered in photographs. "I am not much of a plastic artist," he began. "So what I did was I chose 19 photographs dating back to 1990. Three of the photographs have never been seen before." We began picturing a young Mr. Stipe at the lunch table, head shaved, face painted half blue, grimly enduring the soulless drivel of the sugar-crazed little Philistines around him. Third Grader: Hey, Stipey, I'll trade you two bags of Fritos for your Snowball. Little Mr. Stipe: No, this Snowball is a distilled cry of loneliness. Parting with this Snowball would mean parting with my grief. Third Grader: How about if I throw in an Oreo? In the midst of our reverie, CHARLIZE THERON came into the party, followed by a camera crew. She was quickly taken to the back of the art gallery. Heads turned. Mr. Stipe continued: "This is a picture I took of River Phoenix in 1990. This is a picture of some really scary fruit that was in a fruit basket in Lisbon earlier this year. This is a picture of PATTI SMITH and TOM VERLAINE en route to their European tour." The lunchbox also came with magnets. After Mr. Stipe's pitch, a bidding war erupted with Bono, Mr. Batali and Mr. Martin. Mr. Martin won the lunchbox. His final bid was $20,000. While you contemplate that, we will recount what MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL said her parents packed in her lunchbox: "They would give me a hard-boiled egg and exotic ingredients and put a fancy egg slicer in the lunch box, too. Kids would be eating their little sandwiches and I would be slicing my egg and spreading out salad and putting together a full meal. It tasted great, but it was a little embarrassing." Things They Forgot to Carry It is our unfortunate duty to report that KIRK (STICKY FINGAZ') JONES, the actor who plays MAURICE (SMOKE) WILLIAMS on STEVEN (STEVE-O-RAMA) BOCHCO's series "Over There," was arrested yesterday. The police said that Mr. Jones, 35, his handle notwithstanding, turned himself in a day after leaving a firearm in his room at the Flatotel in Midtown. Callz to Mr. Jones's people were not returned. With Joe Brescia From NetMusicCountdown Chris Martin's New Lunchbox Coldplay singer outbids Bono in auction for REM lunchbox. By Krista Desens NEW YORK, NY Wednesday Oct.19.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Coldplay's Chris Martin faced off against U2's Bono last Sunday (October 16th), but it was all in the name of love and charity. During the Lunchbox Auction kick-off event held on October 16th in New York, Martin and Bono got into a bidding war for a lunchbox designed by REM vocalist Michael Stipe, reports http://www.Virgin.net. Stipe's hand-created, one-of-a-kind lunchbox was just one of over 100 celebrity-designed lunchboxes that will be auctioned off over the next couple months to raise money for hunger relief organizations, the Food Bank For New York City and The Lunchbox Fund to benefit children's programs in New York City and South Africa. Chris Martin was the winner of the Michael Stipe lunchbox, edging out Bono with a winning bid of $20,000, Bono later joked: "It was death by Coldplay." MORE... The Lunchbox Auction is currently underway at eBay, and celebrity-designed lunchboxes will be offered for auction in lots of 10 at a time. From e-Central Chris Martin Buys £20,000 Lunchbox Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has bought a lunchbox designed by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe valued at £20,000 at an auction on Sunday night. He outbidded U2 frontman Bono for the lunchbox at a star-studded event at the Wooster Projects Gallery in New York City. In attendance were celebrities like Mike Myers, Charlize Theron, Naomi Campbell and Alicia Keys. The auction put under the hammer lunchboxes designed by celebrities like former US President Bill Clinton, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie. From dotmusic Speed of sandwich (Tuesday October 18, 2005 05:10 PM) Chris Martin paid £20,000 for a lunchbox designed by Michael Stipe at the weekend, going head-to-head with Bono at a charity auction. The Coldplay singer outbid the U2 frontman at the Wooster Projects Gallery in New York City on Sunday night, at an event packed with stars. After being frustrated in his attempt to buy Stipe's lunchbox at the auction, which was raising money for the Food Bank for New York City, Bono commented: "It was death by Coldplay." Meanwhile, fellow U2 member The Edge was successful in buying a lunchbox designed by former US President Bill Clinton. The event was attended by showbiz luminaries including Mike Myers, Charlize Theron, Naomi Campbell and Alicia Keys. Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie were amongst the other designers behind the 100-plus lunchboxes that went under the hammer.

  6. Can you really see a so drastic change ? ;) It's their own music, it's their own sound. I don't think they'll go Erasure next year ;) Maybe an Erasure-like video (cos they're so boring, lately...), but they have a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist and a singer/piano player... :)

As you know, Glastonbury isn’t happening in 2006, organiser Michael Eavis is letting the land on his Pilton Farm recover and concentrating on his 500-strong collection of cows. [...] If they release a new album before the end of 2006, maybe they'll still be touring on summer 2007. Maybe Glasto 2007 then a long break
  8. I think he's kidding :) But a change is definitely a big need :)
  9. From The Sun Martin: Paul Daniels is best By SUN ONLINE REPORTER SINGER Chris Martin claims there is only one act in the world that is better than Coldplay – magician Paul Daniels and his assistant Debbie McGee. The British band were named Best Act In The World Today at the prestigious Q Awards on Monday, beating off stiff competition from Oasis and U2. Chris admitted he was thrilled at receiving the accolade but insists his group cannot compare in the entertainment stakes to the diminutive magician and his wife. He told Radio 1: “We’re good but we’re not better than Paul Daniels, especially with Debbie McGee. They’re an unbeatable combination" Maybe he wants to sing with him in the new Coldplay cd ;)
  10. They really need to change. X&Y is not band, but it's just the same stuff like AROBTTH. There's too many bands that sound like Coldplay, nowadays. People could get tired of the same supper every year. Mid 2006 will see the release of the new Keane cd. And there's a rumored new album by U2, too...
  11. Chris wants to... blow our socks off From GigWise Coldplay Talk About Their Next Album It'll "blow your socks off"... by Scott Colothan on 10/13/2005 More News... Despite still being in the middle of intense touring, Coldplay have revealed that they are already busy working on new material. Chris Martin admitted that with their third album ‘X & Y’, the band have finished the first stage of their career and will be moving on to new territory with their next long-player. The frontman said: “We’re always working on new material. We’ve got no laurels to rest on, man. We’re still looking for our laurels in my opinion. ”We’ve everything to prove and we’ve finished phase one of Coldplay and now we’re gonna enter phase two, which could be the Abba phase it could be the transvestite phase, who knows, but it’ll definitely be good. “It’s not a reaction against anything as much as an evolvement. But the new record’s gonna blow your socks off. Or tights, depending on what you’re wearing.” Band guitarist added in the xfm interview: “We don’t want to keep doing the same thing all the time.” We look forward to their East-Bulgarian-Acid-Techno-Funkathon with fervent anticipation. Hmm.
  12. From Ireland On Line Martin eyes Coldplay duet with Dion 10/10/2005 - 17:34:49 Coldplay frontman Chris Martin hopes to record a duet with Celine Dion in the near future, because he wants to push the band's sound to the limit. The Clocks singer is determined to expand Coldplay's sphere of reference and believes a duet with Canadian Dion will help him achieve that aim. He says: "We shouldn't restrict our options. To me, the most bizarre things at the moment are the most exciting. "I'd even be up for making a didgeridoo album in Alice Springs."
  13. From XFM ! Top Story: Chris Martin On New Coldplay Album Oh yes. Check out the headline on that mate. Chris Martin and Johnny Buckland spoke exclusively to Xfm about the next Coldplay album, which as we predicted is something of a change from the ambitious soundscapes (ahem) of ‘X&Y’. They may still be touring the world in support of their last radio friendly multi-squillion unit shifting opus ‘X&Y’ (including some fucking huge arena gigs in the UK this Christmas) but speaking to Xfm, a very jovial Chris Martin confessed that the band are at work on the new record already. “We’re always working on new material,” he explained, “We’ve got no laurels to rest on, man. We’re still looking for our laurels in my opinion. We’ve everything to prove and we’ve finished phase one of Coldplay and now we’re gonna enter phase two, which could be the Abba phase it could be the transvestite phase, who knows, but it’ll definitely be good.” Early rumours that the new Coldplay material will be radically more stripped down their last release, also seem to be true. “We want to do something different,” explained guitarist Johnny Buckland, “We don’t want to keep doing the same thing all the time.” "It’s not a reaction against anything as much as an evolvement." continued Chris, "But the new record’s gonna blow your socks off. Or tights, depending on what you’re wearing. As for what Chris, his wife Gwyneth Paltrow and their little baby Apple are up to over next six months, its looks like the tree hugging, mung bean latte sipping crap is right out the window. “Yeah, we’re gonna make a Jackson 5 album with all our kids and basically sell out,” Chris laughed, “There’s OK magazine photo shoots, there’s all kinds of reality television shows in the works, I can’t even begin to tell you. There’s a range of coffee mugs, it’s gonna be big.” Is it not possible to submit news anymore ?
  14. From Daily Mirror 22 September 2005 GWYN'S REVIEW WRATH With Jessica Callan, Eva Simpson And Caroline Hedley AMAZING as it sounds, even holier-than-thou Gwyneth Paltrow can make bitchy comments. The 33-year-old star was furious with US journalists who slated hubby Chris Martin's latest Coldplay album X&Y. When a New York writer called them "the most insufferable band of the decade", Gwyn admits: "I thought, 'I wish this writer extreme misery and bodily harm.'" On reading the reviews, she says: "If you're the partner of the person, it's a dagger to the heart." Don't worry, Chris will Fix You.
  15. From The Miami Herald Posted on Tue, Sep. 20, 2005 Coldplay's Chris Martin thrives on post-adolescent angst BY EVELYN MCDONNELL Chris Martin can make humility an act of hubris, and vice versa. He's as cocky and as insecure as rock stars come, a psychic balancing act reflected in his band Coldplay's crescendo/crash songs. For instance, during a recent interview, the handsome, Bono-voxed singer says that the four hours he recently spent in a Miami studio with hip-hop producer Timbaland provided a bracing reality check - even while he acknowledges his own superstar status. "I gleaned that it doesn't matter if you're in one of the biggest bands in the world," Martin says on a mobile phone as his car makes its way out of New York City, en route to a show in Ohio - "it doesn't mean you're very good." Then Martin concedes this is no revelation: "But I glean that most days." Thanks to the nagging inescapability of their hummably sad songs - and of course, to Martin's marriage to Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow - no band in recent years has pierced the celebrity stratosphere as quickly as Coldplay. When their label EMI announced earlier this year that the British group's album "X&Y" would not come out in the first quarter as originally planned, the public company's stock took a dive. The quartet's June release was then greeted with the kind of fanfare few acts get for their third album. Ad nauseam, Coldplay (Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion, and bassist Guy Berryman) has been called "the next U2." It's probably all been too much too fast, as Martin is the first to admit: "It's funny when you realize you've become one of those people that you always used to imagine lived on Mars." Martin's success may be out of this world but, like so many blue-eyed British pop stars before him, he still kneels at the altar of black American music. "It was the best fun I've ever had," Martin says of his short experience with Timbaland. Earlier this year, he jokingly (I think) told a magazine that maybe he would chuck Coldplay to be the hip-hop heavyweight's assistant. He won't reveal what the unlikely duo was working on, just keeps using the word "amazing." The studio time was the finale to an MTV Video Music Awards weekend Martin also says was "amazing." "It was crazy. First when we got there everyone was talking about the hurricane. Then Suge Knight was killed, then he wasn't killed. Then the MTV awards is kind of funny. Then last night we went out to the studio and one of the girls that works for us, we had to call her an ambulance. It was just a crazy few days." Coldplay, nominated for four VMAs but winners of none, performed at the show. They eschewed the production's waterworks and dancers for some simple emoting and playing, with Martin wandering into the bleachers and singing to lucky audience members. "We asked for 500 old men but they said it would damage their ratings," Martin jokes. The 28-year-old father of 1-year-old daughter Apple likens the VMAs to a school track meet. "These things are incredibly funny because there's all these people there with all their crews. When you watch it on TV you feel like everyone must know each other_ it's all very glamorous. But the reality is ... everyone knows who everyone else is, of course, but everyone's kind of wary of each other." Martin says he didn't pay too much attention to the onstage and backstage conflicts between 50 Cent's G Unit and Fat Joe's Terror Squad, who insulted each other on the mikes then nearly got into a brawl behind the scenes. "I've been to a few awards show with 50 Cent," he says. "It's the same as with Oasis in London: You're glad they're there cause something might happen." Besides, speaking two days after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Martin has more important things on his mind. "The reason why I didn't really notice the beefs and all that is it seemed so irrelevant. There's these big things going on so close by. The arguments between a couple of people at awards shows, they pale in significance. Increasingly in our world we're focusing on the doings of celebrities to distract ourselves from the actual goings-on on the planet. Escapism is really dangerous." This is the sort of BIG STATEMENT for which Coldplay is known, loved and mocked. Like U2, they are a band with causes, particularly, fair trade. These are educated lads who met at college. Their 2000 debut, "Parachutes," was a haunting, hopeful, mournful lullaby emanating from the fallout of Radiohead's "OK Computer" apocalypse. It and '02's "A Rush of Blood to the Head" won Grammys for best alternative albums. And in '03, Martin married Paltrow. Having sold a whopping 737,294 copies its first week of release, "X&Y" solidifies Coldplay's graduation from alternative to mainstream. The album is a beautiful, if comfortable, compendium of confessed doubts and whispered assurances. Coldplay has been criticized - in some quarters, condemned - for playing it too safe on the record. You would think having it all - height, good looks, gorgeous wife, No. 1 band, darling daughter - would inoculate Martin against the barbs of people undoubtedly less blessed than he. But he remains a sensitive lad. "We've got to a position we've never been in before, where we're kind of part of the structure and so most people have an opinion on us," Martin says. "Whereas three years ago most people didn't have an opinion on us because most people didn't know about us. A lot of people really hate Coldplay at the moment. But I don't think they really understand we always hear about it. It's really hard to accept. We're just trying to come to terms with the fact some people really like us and some people really don't." Martin admits that he may have a somewhat neurotic tendency to focus on the negative. "My dad always says you can't please everybody but you should never give up. I didn't really listen very much. Often the things you're told when you're 9, you don't start listening to until you're 28." When he complains about our culture's celebrity obsession, Mr. Paltrow knows whereof he speaks. He denies reports that he has struck out at the paparazzi that hound him and his family. Still, he has a Kurt Cobain-like tendency to sound weary of fame. He's not. "Absolutely not," he replies when asked if he ever wishes he could go back to just being in a little rock band. "I wouldn't change a single thing. Don't get me wrong - I could not be more over the moon. But from a journalistic point of view it's something you've got to try and learn how to deal with, people really not liking your music." Martin is apparently one of those artists who needs something to fret about. That restlessness keeps him going, fuels him even. "There's so much to write about all the time, even if you're seemingly on top. Life is always carrying on. You can write about why am I having a great day today, but then 200 miles away there's a hurricane going on. There's always life to write about."

  19. From St Petersburg times http://www.sptimes.com/2005/09/12/Xpress/Multitalented__multid.shtml Multitalented, multidimensional, multiplatinum There's a lot to like about Coldplay: the sound, the lyrics, the humor. Still not convinced? Here are 10 reasons Coldplay rules. By LYNDSEY McKENNA Published September 12, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the heels of its third multiplatinum album (which happens to be its third release overall), Coldplay is one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment. The band, fronted by Chris Martin, has had a solid fan base since its debut, Parachutes, was released in 2000. Next came A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) and most recently X&Y in June. But while the British foursome have devoted followers around the world, many others despise the group. The New York Times recently said Coldplay was "the most insufferable band of the decade." How is it possible for there to be so much controversy over one band? I can't really answer that question. But I know Coldplay is absolutely spectacular. In honor of their upcoming concert Wednesday at the Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa, I have compiled a list of 10 reasons why I think Coldplay is currently the greatest band: 10. There is more than one person in the band. If you only know one thing about Coldplay, it's most likely that Chris Martin is their pianist and singer. While he may get the most publicity, there are three other talented musicians in the group: Guy Berryman on bass guitar, Jonny Buckland on lead guitar and Will Champion on drums. 9. Oh, yeah, Gwyneth Paltrow. Martin is married to the Oscar-winning actor. Could there be a more talented couple? When you mix a movie star and a musician, imagine the gene pool for their children. (See reason No. 7!) 8. The band members are aware of the world around them. In the tradition of globally aware rock stars, like Bono of U2, the members of Coldplay are involved in the Make Trade Fair organization, which works to eliminate trade barriers in poor countries in order to help reduce and eventually eliminate poverty. Ever seen the pen mark on Chris Martin's hand? That's an equal sign to represent Make Trade Fair. 7. Apple, Martin and Paltrow's daughter. Could fatherhood be the reason that Martin stays grounded? Besides that, she looked adorable wearing those bright pink ear covers at Live 8. 6. A healthy sense of humor. It's not all serious when it comes to Coldplay. For instance, they made a video in honor of Apple's birth. It features Martin rapping about cleaning up diapers with the band wearing wigs. 5. They are their own best and worst critics. One minute the band might be saying they are the best band on the planet. The next they could be saying that when they listen to Nelly, they wonder why they can't be that good. 4. Did I mention the music? The music of Coldplay has a unique sound. Check out the Music Quiz on your iPod and you can clearly tell if a song is Coldplay. The vocals are haunting. The guitars are catchy, while still being original. The piano is played with such skill and precision. Trust me, their songs will get stuck in your head. 3. Lyrics. Although Martin may not think his lyrics are worthy to be in the liner notes, I think they are. They are insightful and full of emotion. The lyrics can touch you on a personal level and still reach half the world. One such example is in Fix You: "When the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something you can't replace, when you love someone but it goes to waste, could it be worse?" 2. The B-sides. What is a B-side? When music used to come on vinyl records, there was always the other side of the hit single. That other side is the B-side. The Coldplay B-side songs are absolutely amazing, even if they weren't originally released. One amazing B-side is Things I Don't Understand. It asks, "How to avoid defeat, where truth and fiction meet, why nothing ever turns out as you plan, these are things that I don't understand." 1. They are Coldplay! Need I say more? Of course, you could always blame my Twisted Logic (featured on X&Y) on A Rush of Blood to the Head (the group's second album). - Lyndsey McKenna, 14, is in ninth grade at St. Petersburg Catholic High, and if you couldn't tell, she's a huge Coldplay fan. * * * Coldplay performs with Rilo Kiley, 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford Amphitheatre, Interstate 4 at U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $35-$70. 20. http://technicianonline.com For a good time, call Coldplay Posted: 09.12.2005 Jeff Reeves/TECHNICIAN http://technicianonline.com/photos/2005/09/09122005coldplay.web.jpg Guitarist Jonny Buckland and front man Chris Martin have a laugh during "Yellow" early in the set. The band played a variety of songs from their three albums including a Johnny Cash cover. Jeff Reeves From the moment front man Chris Martin bounced to the front of the stage Saturday night, the energy level only increased at Alltel Pavilion. Paired with an amazing light show, Coldplay rocked through a set list jammed with old favorites and new songs from X&Y. Nothing can be worse than dropping $50 on a ticket only to see the artist mope around on stage, think they are a total badass and never acknowledge the audience. Coldplay made the audience it's fifth member with it's sing-a-long version of the "The Scientist" and even singing Happy Birthday to guitarist Jonny Buckland. During a remarkable version of "In My Place," Martin made a dash from the stage into the audience, giving out high fives as he sang from atop a railing in the middle of the amphitheater. Martin was not the only member beaming with energy. Drummer Will Champion beat his drums like they owed him money every song. Champion even hopped up from behind his kit to play piano on an acoustic mini-Johnny Cash tribute which included "'Til Kingdom Come," "Ring of Fire" and "Don't Panic." If guitarist Jonny Buckland wasn't reeling off one of Coldplay's classic riffs, he was snickering at Martin as he ran around the stage like a madman. Bassist Guy Berryman kept to himself until he accompanied "'Til Kingdom Come" with his harmonica. A video screen spanned across the entire stage projecting images of everything from a confused bear, a massive digital clock, explosions and even the crowd made several appearances. During the classic, "Yellow," dozens of giant yellow balloons drifted down from the rafters. A few made their way onto the stage as the rest exploded sending confetti raining down on the crowd. If the main set list wasn't enough, the encore put the show over the top. Starting off with "Swallowed by the Sea," Martin and his band mates were splashed with black and white images of a set list scribbled on a piece of paper. "In My Place" was next and this was probably the pinnacle of the show. While Martin stood in the middle of a horde of around 20,000 the crowd took over the chorus of "Yeah, how long must you wait for?" If that still wasn't enough, the band topped off the evening with "Fix You." Accompanied by a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling, the band eased its way into the booming chorus that led the night to a close. The crowd was all smiles as they were on their feet from "Square One" and probably never sat until they got to their cars.
  21. FromNews And Observer Coldplay show rocks with spectacle By DAVID MENCONI, Staff Writer You can tell a lot about rock stars based on how they react to onstage spontaneity. A bright pink bra landing on top of one's guitar mid-song, for example -- which is exactly what happened to Coldplay's Chris Martin Saturday night at Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek. The garment launch came during "Til Kingdom Come," one of several songs Coldplay performed semi-unplugged at the front of the stage; and Martin, bless his heart, took it off his guitar and placed it atop his head as the crowd roared. Saturday night's show felt like old times, with bright lights, iconic rock-star poses and big yellow balloons filled with confetti, all in front of a soldout-to-the-rafters house. There have been precious few breakthrough rock tours in recent years, and this was a big ol' rock spectacle along the lines of U2 in the mid-1980s. While the show didn't have much flash-bang technology, there were some craftily arrayed visual effects. On-the-spot video editing showed stylized shots of the musicians on the rear screen as they played, creating the effect of watching a live-concert DVD in-person. At one point, the screen prompted the audience to "Get your camera ready... Take a photo," then showed the audience holding up cameras and cell phones en masse. To the strains of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," the lights went down and the fog machines came up as the four band members strode onstage. Then they started into "Square One," backlit so brightly against the stage-rear video screen that they looked pixilated. Martin began singing from the rear of the stage and then ran forward, leaping the last 10 feet to land near the front edge. The first clear shot of Martin on the screen drew piercing shrieks from the crowd (nothing like being married to a movie star to enhance a rock star's desirability quotient). The other three guys in Coldplay all put in fine work, especially guitarist Jonny Buckland; but you hardly noticed because it was hard not to watch Martin. He skillfully worked the stage, his microphone, piano, guitar and, of course, The Grand Gesture. There were times when Martin looked like he was doing a sped-up yoga routine as he skittered across the stage. And during the encore, he ventured out from the stage to sing a verse of "In My Place" from amidst the audience. "Speed of Sound" was quite good, as was "Clocks" (on which Martin did a sort of limbo at the piano, turning under his microphone at a painful-to-watch angle without missing a note). The latter song accelerated to a breakneck ending a la The Who's "Baba O'Riley." And in maybe the least-likely cover choice of the year, they did the Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire." Pretty much everything hit the mark, even the botches. Midway through the first verse of "The Scientist," Martin broke into a coughing fit at the piano. He gamely tried to continue, until drummer Will Champion made him start over. "Just forget you ever heard this," Martin said as he started the song again. "I think it sounds better this time." Coldplay is so charmed right now, even the mistakes are working out. Staff writer David Menconi can be reached at 919/829-4759, http://blogs.newsobserver.com/beat or [email protected].
