  5. David Blain's- Thank you for your support Now four days into his recovery following Above The Below, David Blaine last night issued a statement thanking his fans for their continued support. “I have enjoyed this quiet time to reflect upon my experience during my recovery. Thank you for all the support, it has been overwhelming.” David has been inundated with gifts from well-wishers during his stay in hospital, and went on to say, “I think gifts and flowers may be better appreciated as donations to a children's hospital." Having suffered four nights of broken sleep due to painful stomach cramps and continued medical monitoring, the magician said he is feeling stronger. His fast was finally broken last night with a handful of crisps, and he is now eating solid food, so far including fruit and a bagel with cheese. Clinical nutrition expert Professor Powell-Tuck, who has been responsible for David’s care at The London Independent Hospital, says he is pleased with his progress. The magician will continue his re-feeding programme with a low calorific intake, with vitamin supplements being gradually reduced over the coming days.
  6. Latest updates .. Pain goes on, but progress is good David Blaine’s recovery in hospital is continuing according to the expectations of his medical supervisors, despite some discomfort on his part. The magician continues to suffer from stomach cramps as his body is re-introduced to nutrition after six weeks of fasting. Other problems experienced by the illusionist include phosphate deficiency, which necessitated corrective action yesterday, low blood pressure and low blood volume. Professor Powell-Tuck, the clinical nutrition expert responsible for Blaine’s re-feeding programme, is hoping to re-introduce the magician to solid food tomorrow. This will include fibre but maintain a low calorific content in order to avoid stomach complications. Professor Powell-Tuck will consult with Blaine and his dietician in choosing foods that meet both the illusionist’s tastes and appropriate nutritional requirements. Blaine’s intake is expected to include fruits, vegetables and meats or proteins. Blaine will continue to consume a nutritionally complete drink with vitamin and mineral supplements in controlled quantities. Blaine is expected to remain in hospital at least until the weekend. It is still impossible to confirm any long-term effects, though Professor Powell-Tuck has said that he anticipates a full recovery.

  12. Blaine begins re-feeding programme David Blaine’s medical team has issued its first statement on the magician’s progress following his arrival at The London Independent Hospital late last night. Professor Powell-Tuck, who is responsible for Blaine’s care has advised that Blaine suffered from stomach cramps during the night. This follows the commencement of a re-feeding programme that will see the magician reintroduced to food very gradually and under strict medical supervision. Blaine broke his six-week fast with a nutritionally complete drink, enriched with high levels of vitamins. The drink is being taken at intervals and in small quantities: Blaine has so far consumed just 660 millilitres. Regular checks will now be made to monitor how the illusionist’s body is accepting and coping with this nutritional therapy. It is hoped that continual monitoring from nursing staff and electro-cardiograph telemetry will prevent complications arising. Blaine’s weight was recorded at the hospital as 70kg and blood tests this morning were satisfactory. Tests will continue today. It is not yet known whether Blaine has sustained long-term damage or how long he will be required to remain in hospital.
  13. First post-box hours on Channel 4 Channel 4 will tonight exclusively show footage of David Blaine’s first hours after emerging from his plexi-glass box. Channel 4 cameras accompanied the magician as he traveled by ambulance to hospital, having emerged amid emotional scenes last night. An estimated 10,000 people gathered to see the climax of Blaine’s feat firsthand, while another quarter of a million tuned in to watch the event on satellite television. But nobody has yet seen what happened once Blaine he left the site of his endurance challenge. Other scenes captured by the film crew include the moment when Blaine, who had lost four stones and not shaved for six weeks, saw himself in the mirror for the first time. Blaine’s medical team is due to make a statement shortly about the magician’s condition. It is not yet known whether he has sustained permanent damage during his feat of endurance.
  14. quick update added ............. Day 44 - Blaine emerges David Blaine has emerged from his plexi-glass box after enduring an extraordinary 44 days in confinement and without food. Thousands gathered to witness him complete his challenge and there was a carnival atmosphere as well wishers waited to see him released. Blaine wept as the box touched the ground and, despite intermittent smiles seemed tired and emotional. His relief at completing his challenge was palpable. As the door to the box opened, Blaine wept uncontrollably. His first words were, "This has been one of the most important experiences of my life". He then broke down again. Supported by members of his team, Blaine then addressed the crowd. "I've learned more in that little box than I have in years. I learned how important it is to have a sense of humour and to laugh at everything because nothing makes any sense anyway". "I've learned how strong we all are as human beings. How strong we all are. "But most importantly I've learned to appreciate all the simple things in life - a sunrise, a sunset, a smile from a strange one, a smile from a loved one and I thank you all so much. I love you all so much. I love you". Blaine then mounted the scales to discover that he now weighs 11 stones, 1oz. This represents a loss of some four stones. Paramedics awaited the box as it descended to the ground. After the weigh in, Blaine was put on a stretcher while undergoing initial medical tests. Blaine was then taken by ambulance to hospital, where he will discover whether the feat has caused any lasting damage to his body and undergo medically supervised re-feeding.

  17. Day 44 -Fans gather for David's exit As thousands of spectators gathered this evening to see David Blaine emerge from his plexi-glass box, our reporter mingled with the crowds. The excitement and anticipation were tangible as people of all ages and from all parts of the world thronged the area that has been the magician's home for the last six weeks. Periodically the crowd would chant the illusionist's name, or erupt spontaneously into applause. Many held banners with words of encouragement and support for the illusionist. "DAVID U R ACE" written in stars-and-stripes letters, read one. Another read, "We're freezing out here! You?" Harmony Korine, co-deviser of the stunt and Blaine's best friend, said that he was "extremely relieved" that David had reached the end. So, too, was Blaine, he said: the magician told Korine yesterday that he was almost at breaking point. Meanwhile, Blaine's girlfriend Manon von Gerkan toured the crowd, hugging well wishers, many of whom have become familiar faces after visiting each day. As von Gerkan said goodbye for the last time, some thrust presents and cards into her hand to pass on to the illusionist. Others wept as they said goodbye and passed on their good wishes. Seated in the disabled area, 27-year-old Chris O'Donovan from Berkshire was delighted to be witnessing the climax of Blaine's feat firsthand. "I think it's brilliant", he said, "44 days with no food, you know it's a big thing". What does Blaine's achievement mean for him personally? "I think his willpower is pretty damned amazing. He's taken a lot from the crowds the he needn't have taken… it's given me inspiration". I asked how he felt about the negative reactions that Blaine got early on in his feat. "I always thought he'd do it. I didn't think the crowd or any abuse that we gave him would put him off. But it was improper that the crowd was like that". Leah and Natasha, 16-year-olds from Sydenham, south London were ecstatic to be witnessing the feat. "He is a genius" Leah said, "and everything he does is so good and we believe in everything. We've come here to support him… He's doing so well… we knew he could do it". Another teenage girl wouldn't answer my questions verbally, refusing to communicate except by nodding or shaking her head. Eventually she opened the palm of her hand to reveal a drawing of an eye, a silent tribute to the legendary interview in which David Blaine would not speak to Eamon Holmes on GMTV. She also held a banner that read, "Congratulations on achieving your vision". Natalia McNeil, a 16-year-old originally from Belarus but now living in Crystal Palace, said, "We've been behind him all the way. I've been here since 8am today… I got up at half-four in the morning". Was she inspired by the feat, I wondered? "Of course, nothing's impossible. He's been amazing. I can't believe he's still waving today".

  22. Day 42 - Blaine's ailments in full Earlier this week David Blaine described the physical pain and discomfort he has endured during his time in the box. In one of his longest speeches since entering his Perspex prison, the illusionist read aloud from his journal, giving a complete list of his ailments. A selection of his words follows. “I wrote down the most difficulties I had. “The first was the backache. The pad is only one inch thick – so when I lie down… my back is in continual pain which started on day two. Also when it gets cold this pad gets really hard so that’s another crazy discomfort. “Number two is sharp shooting pains in my muscles… I can’t stretch arms or legs out ‘cause of this killing pains. “Next – always cold at night – the walls are thin. The lights do nothing to provide heat. The two small, round heaters didn’t last – if I put my hands right against them I can feel that... In the day, the sun bakes. “Number four. Headache. “Number five. Strobe light effect in eyes. “Number six. My heart is beating really fast, then slows down and stops – it’s irregular. “My mouth is always dry which reminds me to drink which is good, and it tastes like sulphur – which almost tastes like s***. For the first days it tasted sweet, cos my body was breaking down sugars glucose. “Dust balls all over everything – they even get in my nose and throat. “When I stand up everything goes black and sometimes my hearing goes out. “When I concentrate on something too much it hurts in my head. “Fantasies about food – don’t usually hurt but once in a while I crave it. “Cause of the taste in my mouth the water is often disgusting to drink. “I’ve only taken a ‘number two’ once, so my body is holding it in and that hurts. Often I wish I was free. “It doesn’t smell too great in here. I don’t smell too good. When I lean face down through that hole – that’s the only time I get fresh air. I wish I could shower and brush my teeth and have some fresh thin soup. This box is always dropping suddenly ‘cause the cables drop so that’s freaky – I’m used to it. “And the last one is that I always want to vomit ‘cause my body is so acidic – and that is why I burp a lot. “
  23. Day 42 - heart palpitations David Blaine’s medical team is seriously worried for the illusionist’s health, after it emerged that he is having heart palpitations. The irregular heartbeat has been caused by a lack of potassium and by thinning of the heart’s walls. Starvation causes all of the body’s organs to shrink as muscle tissue is broken down into glucose. A shortage of electrolytes – including potassium – in the body may lead to problems with heart function as cells struggle to transmit the electrical signals which control their function. In extreme cases, this may lead to heart attack. It is not know whether his condition is jeopardizing Blaine’s ability to stay in the box until Sunday evening, when he is scheduled to emerge.
  24. Day 41 - Medical update Blaine has talked repeatedly of the high acidity of his blood during the last few days. Nutrition expert Dr Adam Carey confirms that this is a side effect of starvation. Higher pH results from the body breaking down reserves of fat and protein in order to order to generate the glucose that is essential for brain function. Whether higher pH is related to the smell of sulphur that Blaine has repeatedly described is less certain. Blaine has also said he is having difficulty breathing. Though it is difficult to pinpoint the cause without examining Blaine firsthand, Dr Carey believes this is most likely to be a side-effect of reduced muscle mass and strength. All muscles, including those in the body’s vital organs, reduce in size during starvation. In this condition, even something as simple as breathing may become more problematic as the diaphragm and lungs get weaker. Blaine is due to emerge from the box on Sunday evening and will be taken directly to hospital where he will be gradually reintroduced to food. This could be the most dangerous phase, however. Damage may occur if re-feeding takes place before the bowel has recovered from the damage caused by starvation. There is also a possibility of electrolyte disturbance as the body struggles to adjust to food. In extreme cases such disturbance may even cause heart attack. The first phase of recovery, during which the body is reintroduced to food usually takes 7-10 days. However, the process of building strength and fitness is much longer. Dr Carey believes that Blaine, who was in excellent physical condition before entering the box, will take up to six months to regain his former level of fitness.
