  20. The government has recorded at least 32 deaths caused by the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that jolted West Java on Wednesday afternoon. But the death toll could be much higher as communication with some affected coastal areas have been cut. More than 1,300 homes were damaged, according to government agencies. Most fatalities were caused by falling debris, officials said. Head of the Health Ministry's disaster control center, Rustam S. Pakaya, reported deaths in Tasikmalaya, Cianjur, Banjar and Garut — all in West Java. At least 112 people — 83 in West Java and 29 in Jakarta — were wounded, he added. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2009/09/02/java-earthquake-claims-32-lives.html Indonesia earthquake: 15 dead as thousands evacuate Java A powerful earthquake rattled Indonesia's main island of Java on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and forcing thousands to evacuate, the country's disaster management agency said. The 7.0 magnitude quake, as recorded by the US Geological Survey, shook buildings in the capital Jakarta and flattened homes in villages closer to the epicentre in West Java. The health ministry said it was sending medical teams to Tasikmalaya, near the epicentre of the quake in West Java. "Many houses are flattened to the ground," said Edi Sapuan in Margamukti village, not far from Tasikmalaya. "Only the wooden houses remain standing. Many villagers are injured, covered in blood." The quake was felt as far away as Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, about 300 miles northeast of Tasikmalaya, and on the resort island of Bali, about 435 miles to the east. At least 27 people were injured in Jakarta, a health ministry official said. Hundreds of people sheltered in a military base in Tasikmalaya, fearing that the initial powerful quake would be followed by aftershocks, an official at the disaster management agency said. Indonesia's main power, oil and gas, steel, and mining companies with operations in West and Central Java island closest to the quake's epicentre said they had not been affected and suffered no damage. Local tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas within several hundred miles of the epicentre soon after it struck, but were withdrawn about half an hour later. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/indonesia/6126169/Indonesia-earthquake-15-dead-as-thousands-evacuate-Java.html Indonesia: Southern Java Earthquake Situation Report No. 1 Source: United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Date: 02 Sep 2009 Full_Report (pdf* format - 42.2 Kbytes) This report was issued by OCHA Headquarters in New York. It covers the situation for 2 September 2009. The next report will be issued on or around 3 September I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES - An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 Richter Scale struck Tasikmalaya, West Java, at 2:55 p.m. local time on 2 September. - The Government of Indonesia reported at least 15 deaths. - The most affected districts are Tasikmalaya and Garut Districts. Some villages in Garut reported 40 percent damage to buildings and houses. II. Situation Overview On 2 September at 2:55 p.m. local time, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter Scale (RS) struck Tasikmalaya District, West Java Province, at a depth of 30km. A second earthquake at 5.1 RS followed at 3:15 p.m. at a depth of 38km. A third earthquake at 5.4 RS struck at 4:28 p.m. at a depth of 15km. A tsunami warning was issued but withdrawn one hour later. The limited available information suggests that the most affected districts are Tasikmalaya and Garut Districts in West Java Province. According to Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB), Indonesia's National Coordinating Agency for Disaster Management, the earthquake claimed at least 15 lives: four people in Tasikmalaya; 10 people in Cianjur and one person in Sukabumi. Twenty people are reported injured in Garut sub-district. No casualties were reported in Bandung city while in Jakarta, 27 people were injured and treated in Metropolitan Medical Center and Jakarta Hospital. The earthquake was reportedly felt in Jakarta and all the way east to Bali. Flight schedules across Indonesia have not been affected. Garut District: There were no reports of significant damage in Garut city. On the other hand, several houses were heavily damaged in South Garut, according to the Social Affairs Office. The sub-districts affected include Cikaret, Cibalong, Singajaya, Cilawung, Pancatura, Banjarwangi, and Pameungpeuk. In some of these sub-districts, the share of heavily damaged houses reportedly reached almost 40 percent. No damages were reported to water facilities. People living along the coastal areas evacuated to more secure areas. In Pameungpeuk sub-district, the local health centre has requested additional beds for injured patients. Telephone and electricity networks have been disrupted. Near Mt. Guntur in Cipanas sub-district, 12 houses were damaged by a landslide triggered by the earthquake. Tasikmalaya District: The most affected area is Cipatujah Sub-district. The local government reported that 70 percent of the houses and buildings collapsed in Ciheras village. Tasikmalaya city had no significant damage, and the electricity and cell phone networks have been restored. Ciamis District: Electricity remains cut off and communication lines are disrupted in southern part of Ciamis. There have been no damages reported in Ciamis city. A number of houses have reported cracks on the walls. Cianjur District: The earthquake was felt mildly. Some buildings reportedly have cracks on the walls. About 5,000 people fled to Sindang Barang following the earthquakes. http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900SID/EDIS-7VHNMN?OpenDocument PS : Jakarta : my hometown! :( :( but me and my family are doing ok yesterday i felt my bed was like vibrating from downside and i thought i was a headache.. omg, i was so scaredddd
