  2. Here is my list; I know it's late so I don't mind if it doesn't get counted. A couple notes: Did anyone else think that pitchfork's list this year was exceedingly indie and kind of crappy? How did St Vincent not make the top 10? Anyways I was just saying since in the past they actually had several bands who went big that year in their top 10 (aka Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, etc). Also, I still think the new Bon Iver is fairly overrated, but still a great album. For me though, it was somewhat inferior to his debut; Perth might be the best song he's done to date though. Finally, choosing number 1 album this year was very difficult and it was a close call between M83 and Fleet Foxes: one happens to be the peak of his career with many strong single tracks, whereas the other was a very consistent album from start to finish and better than the first IMO. Favorite Albums of 2011 1. M83 – Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming 2. Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues 3. St Vincent – Strange Mercy 4. Radiohead – The King of Limbs 5. Wilco – The Whole Love 6. Bon Iver – Bon Iver 7. Destroyer – Kaputt 8. Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes 9. The Antlers – Burst Apart 10. Cut Copy – Zonoscope 11. Atlas Sound – Parallax 12. Panda Bear – Tomboy 13. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong 14. Wild Beasts – Smother 15. Neon Indian – Era Extraña 16. Girls – Father, Son, Holy Ghost 17. Holy Ghost! – Holy Ghost! 18. Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto 19. The Decemberists – The King is Dead 20. My Morning Jacket - Circuital Honorable Mention The Horrors – Skying The Black Keys – El Camino TV on the Radio – Nine Types of Light Okkervil River – I am Very Far Los Campesinos! – Hello Sadness Björk – Biophilia Battles – Glass Drop
  3. Favorites albums so far: Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes Radiohead - The King of Limbs Cut Copy - Zonoscope The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong The Decemberists - The King is Dead (this one is solid at best, but a significant improvement over their previous) TV on the Radio - Nine Types of Light (not as amazing as previous two, but still great) Overrated: Panda Bear - Tomboy (I liked it and everything but didn't like pitchfork fawning all over it and giving an ok review to TVotR, and it doesn't come close to Person Pitch, somewhat inconsistent) James Blake - self titled (really don't get this one; a couple of good songs, but for the most part just sounds very dull to me) On another note, I think the new fleet foxes might become my favorite album of the decade so far. I'll admit I was a bit worried upon first listen because it sounded like a repeat of their first album, but after 3-5 listens I realized that wasn't the case. The melodies are more complex, labyrinthian and constantly reveal new layers, and I think Pecknold has made a significant step up in his songwriting. Yes it's true that some of their formula hasn't changed (such as the vocal harmonies) but it's a good thing. Looking forward to the new Okkervil River, and especially The Antlers.
  4. My current ranking of Radiohead's albums: OK Computer>KID A≥The Bends>In Rainbows=Amnesiac=The King of Limbs (???)>Hail to the Thief>Pablo Honey Not really sure about the 3 in between yet exactly....my opinion on In Rainbows and Amnesiac seems to change constantly, and The King of Limbs might end up the same. For now, I would say Amnesiac has a slight edge.
  5. Ok, so I've been listening to TKoL for several days now....during the first day I only listened to it like twice and it seemed like an interesting album but honestly I just couldn't wrap my head around it. On subsequent listens during the 2 following days everything seemed clearer, and honestly I think it's an amazing album already. Some ppl have noted that it doesn't cohesive, I'm not really sure what you're all referring to? I think musically it is cohesive, and it relies mostly on textures, repetition, and well placed vocal effects. From a songwriting perspective it does appear like there's a part missing, and I think ppl who have speculated that there will be a part 2 may be correct. Others have already mentioned the title of the last track "separator," and I think one of the final lines in that song is something like "if you think this is over, then you're wrong." I guess we'll just have to wait and find out. PS I'm sure many of you know this already, but the album title refers to an ancient oak tree in Wiltshire so that may or may not help w/ understanding the lyrics.
  6. Those of you complaining about the length do realize that it's only about 5 minutes shorter than In Rainbows right? Anyways I don't really mind the length; I'm sure if they release a B-sides it'll make sense why they left those songs out.
  7. Um yeah....so I found out really late that they decided to release it a day early? Just started listening....Will take a while.
  8. Hmm, it's kind of disappointing not to see LCD on more lists....one of the few artists that has consistently put out top quality material over 3 consecutive albums nowadays. Also, am I the only one who thought the new Deerhunter was kind of overrated? Don't get me wrong it's a good album (which is apparent by my inclusion of it on the list), but I was surprised how well received it was by critics and pitchfork had it at #3 on their year-end list. I thought it was just more of the same (which isn't a bad thing considering their previous stuff) with a few changes/tinkering here and there, but certainly it's nothing earth-shattering.
  9. Hope it's not too late, but here is my list anyway: My Top Albums 1. Teen Dream – Beach House 2. This Is Happening – LCD Soundsystem 3. The Suburbs – Arcade Fire 4. The Age of Adz – Sufjan Stevens 5. Body Talk – Robyn 6. High Violet – The National 7. Contra – Vampire Weekend 8. Crystal Castles (II) – Crystal Castles 9. The Monitor – Titus Andronicus 10. Brothers – The Black Keys 16. Heartland – Owen Pallett 17. Transference – Spoon 18. Swim – Caribou 19. Plastic Beach – Gorillaz 20. Everything in Between - No Age Nothing Hurts - Male Bonding Congratulations - MGMT
  10. I'm guessing you prefer My Girls? I love that song too, but I always preferred Brother Sport even when I first heard that album. Also, I think I kind of got a little sick of the My Girls hype.

  12. Here is my list. I initially had 100 albums, but I cut it down to 50, since I felt like some of the bottom 50 were not as essential... P.S. I set a limit for a maximum of 2 albums per band/artist (for the likes of Radiohead, Spoon, etc). Also, I copy my numbered list from word, although for some reason it didn't show...but it has been edited. 1. Arcade Fire ~ Funeral (2004) 2. Radiohead ~ Kid A (2000) 3. 13. Hmm....this is mostly predictable and unsurprising. In fact, it seems like they took pitchfork's list and reshuffled some of the albums; replaced albums of some bands for others (aka choosing Elephant over WBC as their top album which is wrong...); and added a few albums of their own (Killers, MGMT, etc). And speaking of MGMT what is that doing at number 18 (way too high)? Were they on drugs when they threw that in there? One of the most incosistent albums of its respective year, besides a handful of good songs. Also, Spoon's Kill the Moonlight is way too low, easily top 20. I suppose, being close to pitchfork's list isn't really a bad thing (probably the best one so far)....or maybe it is depending on your view of that site.
  14. I figured Muse would be #1, although they don't really deserve it since it is their worst album to date. I'm glad Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, and Phoenix made the top 10 though.
  15. "In fact I am going to make a list on Microsoft Word of a load of albums I have enjoyed from this decade and then narrow it down I think...." I've been doing this every year since like 2005...Usually I narrow it down to 20 for the each year though.
  16. Ok, so maybe I exaggerated the "doesn't even come close" part, but regardless I find In Rainbows slightly overrated nowadays (besides Reckoner which is still stunning). Although, I'll admit I was obsessed with it for like 6 months, but I think the effect wears off after a while.
  17. Hmm, there are a bunch of categories, so I will only nominate for the ones that I have enough to choose from. Song of the Year 1. What Would I Want? Sky - Animal Collective 2. Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear 3. Stillness is the Move - Dirty Projectors 4. 1901 - Phoenix 5. Watching the Planets - The Flaming Lips EP of the Year 1. Fall Be Kind - Animal Collective 2. Bay of Pigs - Destroyer 3. The Open Door - Death Cab For Cutie Music Video of the Year 1. Watching the Planets - The Flaming Lips 2. We Own the Sky - M83 3. On the Water - The Walkmen 4. Liztomania - Phoenix 5. Life in Technicolor II - Coldplay Best debut album of Year 1. XX - The xx 2. Post-Nothing - Japandroids 3. Album - Girls 4. Monster of Folk - Monsters of Folk 5. no. 2 - jj Overrated album of the Year 1. Wavves - Wavves 2. The Crying Light - Anthony and the Johnsons 3. Bitter Orca - Dirty Projectors 4. See Mystery Lights - YACHT 5. Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear Underrated album of the Year 1. Hospice - The Antlers 2. Embryonic - The Flaming Lips 3. Dragonslayer - Sunset Rubdown 4. Monsters of Folk - Monsters of Folk 5. Popular Songs - Yo La Tengo Best album artwork 1. Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective Album of the Year (Canada) 1. Dragonslayer - Sunset Rubdown Album of the Year (United States) 1. Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective Album of the Year (UK) 1. XX - The xx Album of the Year (Rest of Europe) 1. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix Music Event/Moment of the Year 1. MJ 2. Radiohead Grammy performance (15 Step) 3. Wake Up - Arcade Fire Soundtrack to Where the wild things are trailer Best Live Act/Tour of the Year 1. The Flaming Lips 2. Deerhunter 3. Animal Collective 4. Modest Mouse 5. Of Montreal Music Disaster/Disgrace To Music of 2009 1. Kanye West Incident 2. Lady Gaga 3. Taylor Swift 4. New Kings of Leon single (Use Somebody)
  18. Best Radiohead album of the decade is Kid A by far and frankly In Rainbows doesn't even come close...but that's just my opinion. In fact, there's still a chance I might choose Amnesiac over In Rainbows as the 2nd Radiohead album...haven't decided yet. I'll probably set a limit of 2-3 albums per band depending on whether I list 100 or 200 albums, since I don't want to show excessive favoritism towards some bands (aka Radiohead, Spoon, Animal Collective, etc).
  19. Sorry I know it's a little late, but hopefully this will still get counted... 1. Hospice – The Antlers 2. Merriweather Post Pavilion – Animal Collective 3. Embryonic – The Flaming Lips 4. Veckatimest – Grizzly Bear 5. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix 6. XX – The xx 7. Tarot Sport – Fuck Buttons 8. Dragonslayer – Sunset Rubdown 9. Post-Nothing – Japandroids 10. It’s Blitz – Yeah Yeah Yeahs 11. Actor – St Vincent 12. Bitter Orca – Dirty Projectors 13. Bromst – Dan Deacon 14. Farm – Dinosaur Jr 15. Album - Girls 16. Monsters of Folk – Monsters of Folk 17. Popular Songs – Yo La Tengo 18. My Maudlin Career – Camera Obscura 19. No 2 - JJ 20. Years of Refusal – Morrissey Anyways, overall this was a pretty good year for music, and somewhat better than last year. Although I would say 2000 and 2002 were still the best years for music during the decade. Also, I had to rush to make this list, so it may end up changing considerably to very little for other thread of best music on this site. But I think the top 5 are pretty much set.
  20. Some of the standouts for me so far this year: Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective (probably album of the year) Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix Dragonslayer - Sunset Rubdown Hospice - The Antlers (competing for album of the year) Bitter Orca - Dirty Projectors Post-Nothing - Japandroids It's Blitz! - Yeah Yeah Yeahs Farm - Dinosaur Jr Actor - St. Vincent Person to Person - Foreign Born Now We Can See - The Thermals This isn't the final list, so don't count it.
  21. This might have been mentioned before already: apparently Radiohead will be starting work on their next album this winter! To read more, use the link below: http://pitchfork.com/news/36740-radiohead-plan-to-make-another-album-after-all/
  22. New album (Merriweather...) is masterful. Probably the best of the their career so far, which is impressive considering their previous albums were great too.
