    Since the first time I heard the song, I though it was in reference to the winter George Washington spent at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War, during December of 1777 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_Forge sorry, just had to get that out there because it makes sense to me. The last line would be in reference to his country, as thousands suffered through the winter
