I can remember downloading VLV onto my iPod and walking through the woods in the snow whilst listening to this song. Surreal. Almost magical it was. Can you remember where you were the first time you ever heard Violet Hill? :)

First off I think it's a great song, nothing like their past work but refreshing as a result. Although I think I've overplayed it (about 15 times). There are a few key themes in the song, first is the long and dark december with the WHITE snow, second is the Violet Hill, third is the references to war. In other words I think Chris is singing the song from the viewpoint of a soldier about to be sent off to war for reasons he cannot control and thus has no other choice. "Was a long and dark December From the rooftops I remember There was snow White snow" He's setting the mood of the song here, a very cold desperate mood that is highlighted by the piano only bei…

Does anybody have a longer version of the synthesizer or backing track used in the first 40 seconds of the song? I find that part amazingly hauntingly beautiful.

When I first heard it from their website I was obviously in love with it, and I always liked it better than Viva La Vida. Then by the time the album came out I had sort of worn it out and Death and All His Friends became my favorite on the album. But recently after listening to both back to back several times, I realized I just LOVE Violet Hill more than any others on the album. Am I the only one who likes it that much? Mostly Ive seen people like Viva La Vida more than it.

It was such a great first single, such a great song, so different, unique but awesome. I miss the feeling of hearing this for the first time. It's been a while. Nothing to give me that feeling now

Hello guys! I know this is not really the right section to post this remix, but since hardly anyone is looking in the Instrumentals & Remixes section of this forum I thought I should post it here. ... Tash's probably move it anyway oh well  However, I just found this remix of Violet Hill on youtube and think it totally rocks. Something really great besides all these shitty dubstep remixes of Paradise and ETIAW. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qaHfOtbYmM]Coldplay-Violet Hill (Capeface Chillout Remix) - YouTube[/ame]

During a Radio 1 documentary on the early years of the band Chris spoke about a time that him and Will went busking when they were students and they played a couple of Simon & Garfunkel songs before being moved along. Chris has also mentioned that the opening line of Violet Hill was written during his time at UCL. Anyway, I was listening to I Am a Rock by Simon & Garfunkel today and noticed that the opening lyrics are quite similar to Violet Hill's. "A winter's day, in a deep and dark December/I am alone, gazing from my window to the streets below/On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow" "Was a long and dark December/From the rooftops I remember/There w…

I remember sitting at my computer at 7:15a.m. waiting for the link on Coldplay.com to go up, but the website was too busy, so i had to miss my bus! I eventually got to the website and i entered my e-mail address, but that didnt work! I tried this at least 6 or 7 times, convinced I didn't enter my e-mail address in correctly or something. So i eventually had to go to school, but on the car ride there, the D.J. on the radio station said, "Alright everybody, there's a new Coldplay song floating about and we have it right here for you on D.C. 101 and I freaked out! It was incredible.

Okay so Ive watched the Violet Hill video several times, and I made some observations. First, did anyone notice Chris going "Whoa whoa" halfway thru Jonnys solo (2:25)? I didnt notice it until in the video it shows Chris singing it, and I was like "cool!" Also, in the lyrics it says he sings "Bury me in honor when Im dead and hit the ground", but in the video you can see it looks more like he mouths "Bury me in ARMOUR when Im dead..." Just watch and listen carefully, and it sounds like he might actually be saying "armour" not "honor" (1:51).

I know this is saying a lot since there are so many other great songs on the album (Yes) but I really do this is the most underrated song on the album. After we listened to it non-stop when they gave it out for free, i stopped listening to it for a long while, but after listening to it live in amsterdam, I have to say this is one of the best songs on the album. C/D? (confirm deny? :D)

I hadn't listened to it in so long. then it just came on my shuffle playlist and It reminded me of last summer when the album was coming out and I remember sitting in my living room listening to radio one to hear the first play. This song was the themetune to my whole last summer. do you remember when you first heard it, where were you the day that coldplay returned!? ps. This is very much a 'I'm-so-stoned-this-seems-like-a-good-idea' inspired thread.

Sorry, if this has been posted already, but the Kooks did a really good acoustic version of it for Live Lounge, and they added a violin too. Here's a link to it: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f7gf1FqVbY]YouTube - The Kooks Violet Hill [Coldplay cover] .com 03/07[/ame]

Where you satisfied by their new video? Were you disappointed? Personally, I was very disappointed with the way they approached the colors of the song itself and the basic images they chose to portray too. I think Violet Hill is an extremely powerful and moving song that could have used a video of equal measure, an emotionally and sonically charged experience, but of course, thats my personal opinion. I respect Coldplay's risk taking, but at the same time, I think they might be trying a bit too hard showing off their new image. What do you think?

I know it was for good fun, but that could affect their U.S. sales because people here take things way wrong 99% of the time, and they can't afford people turning that into something wrong. your opinions?
