Artists that I am having trouble deciding...
Here are a few artists I am having trouble forming opinions about...but I will say that I like them more and more everytime I hear them: 1. John Mayer 2. The Thrills (becoming a new fav.) 3. The Music 4. British Sea Power 5. Ron Sexsmith (I think I only like his stuff cos he and his bassist are really nice...and it kind of makes you feel guilty not to like them). Anyone got opinions on any of these?

The most beautiful album in the world is....
Parachutes really is the best album on Earth and I'll hold a flippin knife to that. Some may say that it is lacking, that there is no way to compare it to those of the musical greats such as the Beatles, Duran Duran, Radiohead, etc. Yet to me Parachutes has something that every other album I have ever encountered in my life has lacked. It's got this natural harmony that comes from four guys just rockin out and having fun. It comes from a purity and innocence that can not be created- merely come from within. The nuances within each song tend to show this...I really love Parachutes

Donnie Darko
Twas a religiously affiliated private school, he would have had to discuss theology and the possibility that God did not exist- a major no no (esp. in the states)!

HELP ME PLEASE!!!!
Right so all weekend I have been procrastinating on filling out my college apps. I've written about half of around over thirty essays, I can't seem to find the right topic. I know I need an essay that'll really wow the admissions officers, but everytime I sit down to write I get the ominous feeling that what I am writing is going to dictate my success or failure in life. I know they are looking for personality and sincerety in the them, and they want to find out about me....I know it should be so easy...but this is by far the most difficult essay I have ever had to write in my life!!! Somebody please help me!

DrP's V Fest ticker:Comin Live from an Oxford Street Subway
What I hate is when there are taller people in front of you who won the tix or summat, so they're not even thrilled that it's Coldplay, they're just there cos they got free tix...They couldn't care less if it was Britney Spears.."O grave world with such people in it!" Now that' my sheer bad concert luck with Coldplay...but Chris bugged his eyes out at me once cos I was wearing a Make Trade Fair shirt (or at least I'd like to think it was me)!!! Ok so I'm a bit fanatical. At anyrate I have apps to fill out and my story was proabably not half as exciting as your story Dr. P....So hurry up and get home (and some sleep)!!!!

Donnie Darko
Cherita was based on a character from Fargo as a sort of hommage but she also is symbolic...she brings out human cruelty ...sheer meany pantsness (new word). This cruelty is juxtaposed with all the stuff that Donnie does, to show us that Donnie isn't such a bad guy (as we may believe because of his actions) because he did not do things out of malice or cruelty.

Donnie Darko
The mad world song is running through my head now! If Donnie mistook coincidence to be fate...and then found out that that was not his purpose...then I spose that the T.U. wouldn't have existed

Donnie Darko
Very insightful, just a few comments though. Firstly, something I noticed and that is mentioned in one of the commentaries, is that water is a symbol in both Crime and Punishment and Donnie Darko. Water in C and P was a tool of redemption, I took it to mean the same in Donnie Darko, i.e. the dream about water, and when he tells the psychologist in one of the hypnotic experiements that he regretted flooding the school (or at least I think that was the case...I haven't seen the movie in a while). Even beyond that though, I don't think we know enough about Donnie's history to determine that when he was younger he was not religious. Raskolnikov too was an atheist when he commited the murders, but then he becomes agnostic again- it is only through his mother's letters, etc. that one finds that he was inherently good. Yes we do know about Donnie's criminal history, but we do know about anything before then. Donnie's mother does make an interesting comment however, she says "what happened to my son." Which indicates that perhaps Donnie is not all bad news. As for Frank, I will once again draw a parallel to Crime and Punishment- though it's a bit of a stretch. Raskolnikov's name means schism, and throughout the novel, he is floating in a delerium between two personalities, a morally conscious one. We find that Donnie is suffering from some form of schizophrenia (regardless of whether he is or not), we could thus assume that Frank (as we are led to believe until the end of the movie ) rests only in Donnie's imagination. Perhaps Frank (now we have to keep in mind that according to this scenario- there is no tangent universe) is that other part of Donnie's schism...the one that is morally corrupt. Raskolnikov realizes his mistake in judgement when he begins to think about who the superheros of the world are. He uses the example of Napoleon, he did some pretty outrageous things, but in the end look at the impact on the world. Raskolnikov had this same idea- kill a worthless person then use the money to educate himself and benefit the world. When he really pondered this, however he knew that Napoleon hide or kill an old woman. When he figures out that he was not a super hero, and that he had commited a murder in cold blood, lays on his conscience that he was merely testing a theory. I, however, don't believe that Donnie would be that apathetic to say that. He seems to me passionate, and caring, because of this, I don't think I would have any feelings of malice for him. You are right we would take his actions and lay them against the consequences...
