APW 2009 from a volunteer's POV
Wow, what a day!
The show was 4 hours delayed, but it went on. I'm a volunteer for Oxfam and a member of the Oxfam Action Corps NYC. We had the surreal honor and pleasure of being at the APW festival on Sunday. Surreal because for 4 hours the park was a ghost town full of vendors and workers floating in the rain from one booth to another, waiting for the clouds to break and not really knowing if there was going to be a show. Also surreal because you could hear Coldplay's sound check at the other end of the park like a distant thunder. When the sun came out at around 4pm, the crowd of 30,000 plus rushed in, most slipping and sliding in the mud to get to the food courts, restrooms and stages. Oxfam got a good number of sign-ups from people who want to fight poverty, climate change, and injustice. That's helping Coldplay kick the habit!
We even got some people to call their senators and demand change. :wink3:
The grounds became a flip flop graveyard in a matter of minutes, due to the quicksand-like mud that suck shoes right off your feet. I even saw a lonely Nike Air force 1 sneaker left behind. Poor sole.
After working and canvasing the park, I got the chance to watch a bit of Elbow and Echo and the Bunnymen. British musicians rock!
And now for the main event....Coldplay!
The best show ever:D
