September 10, 200619 yr Says who? and i wasnt talking about pregnant mothers, but families with kids who take them to a restaurant, where there are smokers. What about people in pubs and restaurts who smoke around children? Should they be jailed?What about the owners alllowing this abuse on their property? Or parents who smoke in front of their kids whilst watching tv? Passive smoking can kill. Should smoking be banned outright? No. to all of that.

Like your logic! Smoking while pregnant causes more danger then smoking around older kids...thus making it worse. It has a different and worse affect on the unborn baby. Thats the logic.

Your contradicting yourself. What if your 8 months pregant and just found out? Youve been smoking 20 a day Isnt the damage already done? Why should having one fag after you found out be illegal? Its a bad law, that means women have to presume they're pregant at all times otherwise they risk running fowl of the law which is grossley unfair.

But its hard to prove that, when you can prove more easily smoking or doing drugs while pregnant. Just because people get away with one crime does not mean others should get away with another. Im not contradicting myself, smoking while pregnant is different after birth, both is bad, but while pregnant is worse, much worse, thus no contradiction! Im not defending the law, but it should be illegal if the mother knows she's pregnant to smoke or do any drugs.

We need to spend less time on matters like this when the real solution is there from the start. I think smoking cigarettes & drinking alcohol while knowingly being pregnant is a very stupid idea but what was talked about at the beginning of this thread was pure horse shit.

Its not really the state's place to tell parents how to behave

Maybe a little bit, but lets keep everything in perspective here. I had a think about this when I had a crap last night. I gotta say most of the time when I lure some unsuspecting lady into my bed, its with the help of alcohol. Drinking alcohol helps me to get people pregnant. Without the alcohol it would be a lot more difficult. And secondly, pregnancy is quite a stressful thing. Not everyone has the kind of iron will that we have, and may in fact need cigarettes just to get through the day. The sort of stress that a pregnant woman may go through without the release that cigarettes gives them may even cause more harm to the unborn foetus than smoking does. And what gives us, or the government, the right to prevent crack-whores from having kids?
