CANADIANS STAND ON GUARD TO WATCH THE ICE MELT.

 

As many already know, the second Thursday of march is Canada's highest Holiday. Christmas and St. Patrick's Day pale in comparison to National Melting Ice Obserbation Day.

 

The tradition was started by Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, and involves joyous Cannucks going outside, joining hands and singing 'O Canada' as they watch the ice disolve.

 

Beaver Bay resident Charlie McKenna has this to say: "It's kinda like them buddhists watchin' the grass grow, only afterward, we all go out and have a beer."

 

One of the highlights of the celebration is the legendary 'Beer Un-burying'. Each fall, to symbolize the hybernation cycle of Northern wildlife, Canadians bury beer in the new-fallen snow, then wait patiently all winter long for the ice to melt so they they can drink it.

 

The Beaver Bay Chamber Of Commerce hopes that this year's celebration will bring some US tourist dollars to the beleagered seal hunting community as it has lost favour with tourists since a visit by noted animal activist Barry Manilow. COC Spokeswoman Jaquelin Daniels says "At least it wasn't Sir Paul."
