Johnette Napolitano

Featured Replies

Former Concrete Blonde frontwoman Johnette Napolitano will release a new solo effort, "Scarred," May 29 via Hybrid Recordings. Her first mass-distributed solo album since 1995's "Vowel Movement," the set includes covers of Coldplay's "The Scientist" :shocked2: and the Velvet Underground/Nico's "All Tomorrow's Parties."

Napolitano collaborated with Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle contributor Danny Lohner on the new album. The singer/songwriter will tour in support of "Scarred" beginning April 27 in San Francisco.

Johnette recently self-released a pair of limited edition albums, "Sketchbook" and "Sketchbook 2," via CD Baby.

Dear Johnette

Despite a powerful voice, former Concrete Blonde frontwoman Johnette Napolitano hasn't acquired the name recognition of a Chrissie, Patti or Nico.

She's worked steadily nonetheless, collaborating with members of Talking Heads (she fronted the band's 1996 reunion in lieu in David Byrne) and Nine Inch Nails. After 20 years as part of a group, Napolitano's now formally going it alone, with her first label-backed solo album and a string of club dates.

Scarred, coming out May 29, is a moody piece of work with measured doses of soft acoustic guitar and spacey synth. The goth crowd that's gravitated toward Napolitano since she sang about ghosts and vampires with Concrete Blonde should be sated, but the artist does some stretching too, as in the beat rap "Poem for the Native" and the primal wail and headbanging riff of "Save Me."

What: Johnette Napolitano

When: Saturday, May 26

Where: House of Crave, Arena District

The disc also includes a sample of her work with NIN's Danny Lohner—a version of Coldplay's "Scientist" that blows the doors off the original—and a cover of the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" that spotlights the similarities between Napolitano and Nico. As each deep, full-throttle voice does its work, you can feel every shot, every smoke and every sleepless night that went into it.
