Christmas losing its fizz: Bollinger has already run out of Magnums

Champagne drinkers planning to quaff the sparkling wine this Christmas have been warned of a potential shortage this festive season.

Britain's oldest wine merchants, Berrys Bros & Rudd, admitted they may have to consider rationing champagne purchases after supplies of top bottles, such as Magnums, Jeroboams and Methuselah, have started to run low.

Berrys Bros & Rudd, who have been selling wine from their St James's Street, London store since 1698, said they may start a waiting list for the more popular bottles.

The surge of popularity of the luxurious bubbly comes from a combination of a growing demand in Western countries and the rising wealth of consumers in India, China and Russia.

Berry Bros & Rudd champagne buyer Simon Field said: "With demand on the up and supply remaining static, getting hold of premium champagne is going to become increasingly challenging - particularly the larger bottles, like Magnums.

"Getting hold of cheap fizz from supermarkets won't be a problem but, if you want the best the region has to offer, you should think ahead to secure the bottles you really want."

Bollinger's Magnum supply has already run out, while Pol Roger has begun restricting the number of Magnums for sale.
