The price of an Upright piano?

Featured Replies

My mum told me that she wants to buy me a piano because we only have an electric and my piano studies are getting pretty damn serious so she wants to buy me a real piano. We decided on an upright cus a Grand won't fit in our house so....

How much do new uprights usually cost and how much do second hand uprights usually cost?

Thanks in advance...

Depends what type. In any case it will be a lot cheaper than a grand piano thats for sure.

If you get a ordinary upright piano no electrics etc they can range from a few hundred to thousands.

If your after electric or digital paino like the GT20 Coldplay uses they can range from a thousand or two upwards. However they are packed with pianos sounds [ like in concerts one song its a piano setting then it can be changed to organ for fix you ] and all the clever technical stuff.

Im not a piano wizz just learn by ear but personally id choose a electric or digital as more can be done with them. But there normally from what ive seen £1000 mark upwards but it all depends on condition, age and make which all affects the price.

Im not a expert on this im only going on what ive read.

Your best bet is to contact local music stores and go down there and see what they have to offer, the link below is to Yamaha pianos but they will be a lot more expensive than a local will be, so best to look around music stores.

You can have mine for free, but the shipping would be out-of-this-world Rachel!:laugh3: I'm betting a good, well-cared-for one, properly tuned, would be a good bet (unless mum wants to spring for something new..). A neighbor of mine had both of theirs repaired and tuned - it wasn't too expensive, and uprights are common enough to be affordable. One thing I've noticed - they vary greatly in sound quality - A Steinway might sound a certain way, and then some other might have a different quality altogether! So, take a good listen first - might even want to open the front up to get the true sound quality..

I had looked on Ebay for prices - there were quite a few pianos offered, so if you have some online auction houses to go to.. or a neighbor who has one just collecting dust in the house - they can be had somewhat reasonably so.

Otherwise, if you're wealthy, go with the Grand, and add a piano room onto the house! (yea, wouldn't that be nice;)) Make sure the builders design the room properly for acoustics - some reverb, but not too much.

22 billion dollars. :sneaky:

i have no idea. i probably shouldn't have come and spammed in this innocent thread. sorry, but i was bored.:(

Ranges

22 billion dollars. :sneaky::laugh3:Yes, some can be that expensive...but only if they're shipped to the space station!:P

Well, I took a look - prices vary greatly. Good used ones can be gotten for $200.00, but you'll have to go to Dorothy's house in Kansas..;) There's no place like home, there's no place like home..:)

The General trends:

Steinway Grand - 14 Grand

Yamaha Grand - 6 Grand

Any Baby Grand - 2-3-4 Grand

Miniature Grand - $250:)

Aunt Nellie's Upright - $200 - $800;)best value I think..

Newer Uprights - $1000 - $5000good, if you've got the bucks!

Steinway Upright - 6 Grand

Shipping to the outback - ?????:P (by wallaby-powered wagon, over dusty roads, past strange and exotic plants and animals..):laugh3:

I would opt for Aunt Nellie's Upright - check it out for good soundboard, mechanical action, general shape, sound quality, etc. - there are some sources for tips on the net - easy enough to search for, if you've got the time.;) With some tuning, and a little polish, you could be in business!

One thing - the dry climates tend to be a challenge on the old glues used in the wooden linkages. Not a big deal - you might have to take out the hammers and links every now and then, and carefully re-glue the loose parts - it's just something I've had to do. Also, sometimes the wood boards get loose on the inside and rattle. This can be remedied with wedges; or, if you get a good used one from Aunt Nellie, just have it gone over by a piano repair person.

Otherwise, Rachel, if you've got funds available in the $1000 - $6000 range, you could get something newer (with less quirks)?? It all depends on how much someone wants to spend, how much space is available in the house, etc..

OOoo, wouldn't it be nice to have a grand piano though.. Oh well, we can all dream!;) Happy Searches!!

That'd be amazing! Owning a good quality Grand Piano is (possibly) every aspiring pianist's dream!!! Mum was thinking of getting a Baby Grand but they cost as much as $10000, which in my eyes, is just wayyy to much money.

We want a real piano, no electrics nothing, because all we have is an electric and the weighting and the feel is far different from a real piano. Thanks Glen, a fews hundreds to thousands sounds like a good price. I'll maybe drop into my local music store and ask them, but thanks for the info guys. :D

$20,000. 1/2 for the Grand, 1/2 for the room!:) (yes, that's a bit extravagant - but then again, people spend money for all sorts of things, like swimming pools, and the like - the piano room would certainly see some use!!;))

Back when I was your age, we had an upright "grand" - which really does sound nice - and I had gotten lessons from a nice neighbor lady - Carrie Markus. I did learn a lot, but I got lazy in summer, and didn't keep up the practicing.. :embarassed::) It really is like playing a giant harp - very beautiful resonating sound throughout the whole house..

Anyhow, there are some bargains on the online auction houses (Ebay is the one I'm familiar with). You can get a Grand for a lot less than 10,000!

Really? We're not rushing into it, dad doesn't want to get one just yet, the pieces haven't gotten to the point where my little electric can't handle them
