Coldplay are releasing their lengthily titled fourth album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends in June. There are ten tracks produced by Brian Eno (!) and Markus Dravs. We have the tracklist. But first, a British survey's just confirmed what we already knew: These songs will make you fall asleep. Via The Telegraph:

 

Music by British band Coldplay is our favourite choice for drifting off to sleep at night, a survey has found.

 

The clean cut rock band topped the "kip parade" in a poll undertaken by Travelodge, with James Blunt, Snow Patrol, Take That and Norah Jones completing the top five.

 

Jordan's autobiography was voted most soothing bedtime story, with David Beckham, Jodie Marsh and Sharon Osbourne also providing highly effective soporific reading.

 

Leigh McCarron of Travelodge said: "We are increasingly relying on slow, sleepy music and unchallenging books to take our minds off the pressures of modern living... Coldplay and Jordan seem to hit just the right spot among Britain's insomniacs."

 

So Coldplay's got ten new sheep for you to count, and they have names:

03 - "Lost!"

05 - "Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love"

Not that you'll need any help getting shut-eye, but also rest assured that Chris Martin's mother-in-law told People his marriage with Gwyneth is strong. Phew!

i definatly want more heavier rock type. and less falsetto so he dont sound like a maner man and i want this album mostly to be for all those people who apsolutly hate coldplay to love them.

Go harder rock! I've been hanging out for Coldplay to really rock it for a while now, but less falsetto is second on my list...I wish this poll was multiple choice

I wouldn't mind a make-you-sleep album but as long as its new and fresh.

I love Chris's lower voice. It'll be nice to hear him sing with it more. His falsetto isn't quite what it used to be after several years of touring.

i don't mind a put-you-to-sleep album at all. i'm kind of worried that they might not be fully ready to go the harder rock route. frankly, i'm unsure if that's very coldplay. my definite first choice is "lower tones, less falsetto." chris has an incredible low voice, and the falsetto can get to be a bit much even for us coldplay diehards.

 

what i really want is a sort of "back to basics" album after X&Y, but i don't see that happening with VLVOD. but i'd love a put me to sleep album, definitely!

I'm hoping for at least one acoustic song, I just discovered I have a huge soft spot for acoustic rock...

ohh yes, i have a huge soft spot for acoustic songs. i think three or four out of my top 5 coldplay songs are either acoustic or piano-ballads. all the more reason for me to want this to stay kind of in that vein.

Yeah, with their new direction I'm afraid there might not be one, but I hope there is.

I voted "Less Faletto and more deeper tones" because i think that's the main reason why some of the songs on X&Y (eg: Fix You) started to grate on me after a while. And sometimes I think that lower vocals can make a song sound much more mature, and sometimes even more listenable. This is why i love the fact that Chris' voice has been described as "grittier" on Violet Hill... and since a harder rock option would be second on my list, and the fact that it has been described 2 times that its a little heavier than past material, I get the feeling I'll really like that particular song.

 

I'm probably expecting a little too much, but I think this will be their strongest album (yes, even better than AROBTTH), because:

 

A) According to Jo Whiley, each song has its own distinctive feel, hence giving the album more variety

B) Brian Eno's & Markus Dravs production, giving them a fresh sound, but one that still feels like Coldplay

C) The experimentation on some tracks, also making the album more interesting and less samey throughout (ie: X&Y)

D) The lower vocals on most of the tracks, or just less falsetto, because personally it makes the songs easier to listen to, plus I just like it that way

E) Darker, "menacing" songs such as 'Yes' which would see a return to some of the darker songs from the Parachutes era (Spies)

F) It is ten track album, so it is likely to have track by track brilliance and little or no filler, and therefore more replay value in the long run.

If you're talking about acoustic songs, I think that 'Life In Technicolor' was described as "acoustic guitar driven", so hopefully Rolling Stone is right :wink:

For some really odd reason, the name 'Life in Technicolour' reminds me of Mika :uhoh:

And I'd just like to add another reason:

 

G) The album will have the song that everybody needs to hear before we die, and consequently I will probably die while hearing it, because it will be so good. Ok I'm done.

It's also gonna be an album we can listen to in our cars, so it can't be that sleepy, then again, I have different standards for that sort of thing. Many people consider coldplay unbearaby soft, and they aren't talking about easy to please and sparks, but speed of sound, clocks, and talk.

i'm hoping for another unforgettable song, or song that oftenly aired on the radio.
