sparks cover help

My band is attempting a cover of Sparks for an upcoming gig, and despite spending a ton of time fiddling with effects, I can't seem to get the mellow vibe of the electric guitar line. Short of buying a vintage Jazzmaster (which sadly is not in the cards for me), anyone have any ideas for effects etc?

I have a reissue tele thinline and a reissue Strat and neither seems mellow enough no matter what I run them through

(note that I'm not trying to get the exact coldplay sound here per se, just trying to find something close, but nothing sounds anything like jazzmaster pups:veryangry2:...)
