Eager beavers build first dam in England for 800 years

It’s the first dam of its kind to be built in England for 800 years.

But the pair of beavers responsible for the mud and sticks creation have a great deal more on their minds than any historic achievement. It is believed they are about to breed.

The pair were brought to Britain from Europe last year.

Staff at the Escot Estate in Ottery St Mary, Devon, created a two-acre home for them with ponds and woodland along a section of the River Tale.

Other beaver colonies introduced in England are established on lakes and do not build dams.

John-Michael Kennaway of the Escot Esate, a stately home and park, said: 'They are wonderful creatures - gentle, hardworking and very intelligent.

'We think they are breeding. We won't know for sure for a couple of months. The dam is quite a feat of engineering for two small beavers.'

Beavers were hunted to extinction in England for their fur by the 13th Century.

So they're SURE that they're actually beavers this time and someone didn't go dumping some unfortunate groundhogs in a river. :P
