Caught on camera: Covert film of litter-louts blighting estate is posted on YouTube

A group of neighbours are fighting back against the litter-louts blighting their streets - by secretly filming them and posting the videos on YouTube.

The angry householders have installed covert cameras in bushes and on walls to catch the litterers in the act.

Since the counterattack was launched, 145 people have been caught on camera dropping litter in the St Peter's estate in Leicester.

Internet users are now being asked to name the litterbugs so they can be prosecuted.

Resident Albert Berer, 27, a member of St Peter's Neighbourhood Monitoring Group, said the posting the films on YouTube and on the group's own website 'might make people think twice about dropping stuff on the street'.

He added: 'We can film at night as well so litter louts are safe at no time and in no place.'

One clip shows a man walking down a path in the middle of the day and openly throwing a plastic bag into some trees.

Another shows a man whirl a half-empty Coca-Cola bottle round his head and hurl it over a bush.

Two men are also caught dropping a KFC wrapper and a silver pie tray on the ground after a park bench snack.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said no one had been arrested yet but all allegations of littering were 'taken very seriously'.

but those videos can't be used as proof in a trial, right?

 

and well, the issue is not that serious.. what about hiring a cleaner?

no reason why they can't. Police get a statement from the videoman/woman to confirm they were taken in a certain place on a certain time and there's your evidence. Make an arrest then interview under caution and bung everything off to the CPS. Easy!
