Reindeer are usually associated with Santa Claus and seasonal cheer, but not so for one reindeer who had to be put down after it trampled a businesswoman on a farm.

The normally placid animal called Mr Frosty attacked Kay Davies, 51, who was knocked to the ground with its antlers.

Self-employed Ms Davies was recovering today following the attack.

The reindeer trampled Ms Davies before colleagues heard her cries for help and dragged her to safety.

She had been tending the animal at Churchfield Farm, near Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, before the attack on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics were hampered by the reindeer, which took almost 40 minutes to bring under control.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: 'The crew needed to call for urgent back-up as the animal was very angry and wouldn't let them near the patient.

'It was eventually captured and the woman treated at the scene and later conveyed to hospital.'

She added: 'Reports were of a reindeer on the loose and initially that the woman had injuries to her head, chest, groin, legs and ribs but these turned out to be superficial.'

Mr Frosty was later put down by a vet.

Ms Davies's business, Wedding Horses, is based at Churchfield Farm and supplies horses and carriages for weddings and Christmas parties.

The farm's yard manager Dominic Sewell said it was a 'freak accident'.

He added: 'The reindeer could take a five-bar gate off its hinges with the power in those antlers.

'It had used its antlers to charge Kay and she didn't stand a chance. It was uncontrollable.

'I tried to help her but it just smashed me to the ground. Kay is only alive thanks to one of her friends who managed to drag her to safety.'

Mr Sewell said the animal was displaying behaviour which was normal during rutting season.

'Its only companions were humans, which may be one of the reasons why this happened,' he said.
